Health Via Modern Nutrition with Dr. Latt Mansor - How NOT to Catch the "Keto Flu" - Why It Happens & How To Avoid It · Dr. Latt Mansor
play

01/15/20 • 7 min

Headaches, heart palpitations, cramps, fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, nausea...these are some of the issues people trying out the ketogenic diet for the first time could experience.

How and why does the infamous "keto flu" happen?

Many don't experience it all, some can power through in just a few days...while some studies show that the keto flu can persist for 14 days.

With all the positive benefits driven from the keto diet, why must some deal with these negative side-effects? We've even experienced a few of them firsthand.

Perhaps, from the wise words of Spiderman 's Uncle Ben: "With a great diet comes great responsibilities."

The main causes include:

  • The natural metabolic shift from glucose to fatty acids.
  • Inefficiency in metabolizing fat during the adaptation period, leaving you feeling lethargic.
  • Electrolyte and water loss.
  • Hormonal responses to the shift in metabolism.

Keep in mind that keto flu is not a traditional "flu", rather the symptom caused by the changes happening in your body as you go through the diet.

Dr. Latt Mansor, H.V.M.N. Research Lead, explains these causes and what you can do to make your transition to the keto lifestyle much easier. If you understand the mechanisms behind those less-than-deal moment of keto flu, you'll be in a much better position to solve it and go on your merry, ketosis-fueled day.

Health Via Modern Nutrition with Dr. Latt Mansor - New Study Claims Ketones INCREASE Inflammation - Why the Results Are Misleading || Research Roundup
play

04/15/19 • 8 min

Wait...hasn't ketones been shown to reduce inflammation in prior studies?

When a new study researched the effects ketones have on inflammation, the results were opposite to what everyone expected...including the researchers themselves.

The paper was published in the Journal of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, and the research group that carried out the work were led by Dr Jonathan Little at the University of British Columbia.

Rather than inhibiting the inflammatory response through BHB’s (a ketone body) actions on the NLRP3 inflammasome, the researchers found that activity of several immune markers was higher when people had consumed ketones.

It can be easy to jump to conclusions and state that "Exogenous Ketones = Increased Inflammation"...as the title of the paper acutely suggests.

Dr. Brianna Stubbs tackles this study and provides further, necessary nuance on how the experiment was conducted, why the results may actually be more positive than negative, and why this development warrants future research.

Health Via Modern Nutrition with Dr. Latt Mansor - Facebook BLOCKED Our Keto Podcast Post for "False, Misleading, or Deceptive Claims"
play

02/13/19 • 11 min

When we attempted to promote our podcast episode featuring Dave Feldman on Facebook, they denied the ad for "false, misleading, or deceptive claims".

The ad copy is as follows:

"Cholesterol just became a little more complicated. We challenge traditional cholesterol guidelines with Dave Feldman, who has years of rigorous self-experiments surrounding low-carb and ketogenic diets. This is a fatty episode that you won't want to miss!"

In our eyes, the post was not making bold claims. We were merely challenging traditional medicinal dogma. Why the censorship?

The rest of the low-carb/keto community seemed to feel the same when we shared the situation. It spurred confusion and outrage that spanned the top of r/ketogains, r/zerocarb, and "nutrition Twitter".

Here's the story.

One of the greatest challenges of training is successfully attaining "functional overreaching". Pushing your maximal capacity results in stress that leads to beneficial adaptations...making your body stronger, faster, & better.

What happens when you do it wrong? Aptly named, "non-functional overreaching" occurs.

Nothing will help besides rest and recovery. In the case of "overtraining", the more serious form of overreaching, it might take months for even the most elite athletes to bounce back.

A recent study found promising signs that ketone esters can alleviate overreaching symptoms. The researchers didn’t necessarily look at how ketones acutely influence exercise performance, but rather how consistent supplementation could affect recovery and training capacity.

The lead researcher, Professor Peter Hespel, described the potential effect of ketones in recovery as “unseen” and “many times greater” than what he’s seen with other nutritional supplements.

Geoffrey Woo breaks this study down, analyzes the experiment structure, and digs deep into the findings for every last nugget of applicable information.

04/01/19 • 15 min

On this Research Roundup, Dr. Brianna Stubbs discusses the culprit behind a news story that generated a health controversy recently.

What do you think the media touted as the next food ready to knock years off your life? This time it’s not cakes and soda, it's not red meat, it's not alcohol...it’s the humble egg.

Dr. Brianna Stubbs unpacks the study behind the batch of fear-mongering headlines. The study in question was published in a well respected journal called JAMA. The study is titled: Associations of Dietary Cholesterol or Egg Consumption With Incident Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality.

After discussing the controversial JAMA study, Dr. Brianna references two additional papers to help paint a more balanced picture around egg consumption:

  1. Egg consumption and risk of coronary heart disease and stroke: dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.
  2. Eggs enriched in omega-3 fatty acids and alterations in lipid concentrations in plasma and lipoproteins and in blood pressure.

What's the truth about eggs? Tune in and find out!
