Unheard: The Medical Practice of Silencing with Dr. Rageshri Dhairyawan
02/27/24 • 47 min
This week’s guest on Healing Place is the powerhouse, Dr. Rageshri Dhairyawan, a force for change in healthcare, an NHS Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine, researcher internationally known speaker on health equity, and Author of Unheard: The Medical Practice of Silencing" which sheds light on silenced voices in healthcare. Out July 4th, 2024 published by Trapeze.
As well as writing for academic journals, Rageshri’s voice reaches the public through platforms like BBC Woman's Hour, BBC World Service and BBC Sounds amongst others.
Rageshri brings eloquence and passion to conversations about healthcare equity, particularly at the intersection of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity. Her dedication stems from witnessing inequalities within marginalised communities and personal experience as a patient, as Rageshri faced neglect when going through IVF which inspired her to speak up against healthcare injustices.
Rageshri joins me to share her story and discuss the importance of amplifying marginalised voices and unpacking biases for better healthcare, why empathy, helpful language, and listening in healthcare and medical training matter, links between intimate partner violence and HIV, culturally competent sexual health services, breaking sexual health taboos, tips for advocating for yourself and looking after your sexual health. Plus, an exciting sneak peek into ‘Unheard’.
