
#1.36 - The Science of Happiness - GGSC

This week, we dip into how the University of Berkeley's Greater Good Science Centre researches and defines Happiness. We explore how Happiness and the related constructs of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness, Wonder, Optimism, Affection and Self-Compassion fit into the Science of a Meaningful Life.
In a time of social distancing and self-isolation, coach Julia Seal focuses on 3 key happiness areas to help us through this time - as individuals and towards our societies and the greater good: Positive Emotion + Social Connection + Cooperation.
Firstly, we look at the essential role of Positive Emotion in our Happiness - from Joy, Gratitude and Mindfulness to Kindness, Self-Compassion and Tenderness - and how they open us up and change the boundaries of our minds and hearts. Then, we find out how taking advantage of the biochemical benefits of these positive emotions on our body and minds results in us being smarter on tests, more resilient in adversity, seeing "oneness" and even enhances cellular renewal in our bodies every day!
Next, we explore why our social connections, our "social capital" is one of the most important and enduring sources of Happiness, how our "ultrasociality" can even predict our happiness levels.
Dig deeper into Empathy and learn how to cultivate it in times of social distancing and even find out how to enhance the 10-part Empathy Circuit in our brains with Roman Krznaric's 6 Empathy Habits.
Lastly, we discover what "pro-social" behaviours and the science of Cooperation and Reconciliation have to do with our happiness. How we are wired for instinctive Cooperation and how Cooperation has the same effect in on our brain's Reward System as eating chocolate!
Lastly, Julia walks you through a new Coaching Tool - Awesome Awe Writing as a way to enhance your Happiness and expand feelings of Awe and Gratitude during difficult times.

This week, we overview the SPIRE Wholebeing model of Happiness, the 4th happiness formula in the Science of Happiness.
Developed by Dr Tal Ben-Shahar, we discover what he means by "the experience of whole person wellbeing - of Wholebeing” and what's included in the 12 principles of SPIRE: Spiritual Wholebeing - Physical Wholebeing - Intellectual Wholebeing - Relationship Wholebeing - Emotional Wholebeing.
Since it's World Health Day today, with a focus on nurses, we consider what's included in the Physical dimension of Wholebeing Happiness and how understanding the science behind these insights we can fulfill our potential, our happiness.
