Sherry Younge of The Artform Studio: The Art of Self-Care & Creating Safe Spaces Episode 7
Understanding the importance of creating a safe experience for her clients and community is an understatement for Sherry Younge. Not only has she kept up with the Covid-19 protocols, and created online spaces for her clients to learn how to cut their own hair through one-on-one coaching sessions but Sherry has made a conscious effort prior to Covid-19 to seek opportunities to address her community’s concern with gentrification by being very involved and visible since to opening of The Artform Studio. Sherry’s intentional and thoughtful approach to her business speaks to her ability to stay viable as we transition.
About Sherry Younge:
Sherry Younge has owned and operated The Artform Studio for the past 13 years, and she has been working to perfect her craft of hair and make up artistry for over 20 years now. Sherry started to learn about the art of hair through the foundation of haircutting courses at Vidal Sassoon in Los Angeles, a creative haircut and hair color technique course at Redken in New York, and then furthered her training working at Carlton Hair International. Sherry's favorite brands to use are Seven Haircare, Instyler, Schwarzkopf, Fromm Beauty, Olivia Garden, Celeb Luxury, and Deva Curl. She is now a Deva Curl Cut Specialist who is certified in their techniques of Curl transformations and Curly haircuts.I WAS INSPRIRED TO DO HAIR WHEN...I realized how important it was for me to manage my hair, especially being that I am Filipino and my hair texture is very thick. My mom gave me a hair styling book in the 80s and it was my favorite book to learn how to do different types of braids. I was determined to learn every braid. I would braid my Aunties long beautiful hair, and at nineteen years old my younger sister had asked that I do her hair and makeup for prom. I thought to myself, "I can do this!" MY STYLE IS... Personally for myself, more of a modern day vintage hair and make up style and designing styles that work for my clients. My specialties are in haircutting, hair coloring, era specific hairstyling, and make up. I love designing cuts and color to make my client’s hairstyle last no matter what hair texture they have. I love adding highlights and dimension to haircolor. Vintage styling is my forte - I've always been in love with the details and design of the many classic styles from the 1920’s to the 1990’s. I've just recently found a love for fashion colors - silver, grey, and violets. IF I'M NOT AT ARTFORM, YOU CAN FIND ME ...At Elements Dance Space watching my daughter dance! Sometimes I might jump and take a class as well!
