Grounded in Maine Podcast is an open conversation about being mindful of how we show up for the world. We discuss the role we play in sustainability including gardening and preserving, recycling, composting and even household DIY. It's a podcast about our commitment to ecological responsibility, and empowering us to take on our role in the solution instead of feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world.

What is Grounded in Maine about?
Grounded in Maine is an open conversation about how we show up for the world. We're talking about sustainability, and my goal is to have people feel encouraged to be creative about sustainability, even if we can't afford a huge farm or solar power covering the property, anything we do will be part of the solution.

117: Jr Sparrow: WV Uncommonplace
Grounded in Maine
10/29/24 • 57 min
Jr Sparrow and I have been friends for a couple of years, but have talked more since I've moved to his home state - even though he doesn't live here now, he's got lots of memories here (and his mom), so he's sharing all kinds of good tips with me. We talk about soil, critters - cute and less cute, and his first sustainability venture as a young person cleaning up after race track events (there's a pro race track less than 15 minutes from me). He is a real wealth of knowledge!
Jr has 3 (THREE) podcasts: WV Uncommonplace, WV Uncommonplace Interviews and Sessions, and Sparrows Under Review. There's even a 4th, that he's not sure the name of ( it's WV Uncommonplace Presents), and they're all different - don't ask me how he keeps track of what goes where, because I'm overwhelmed sometimes with just one... He has a job, too-
Jr's site for all access to him is here: https://linktr.ee/wvuncommonplace?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid= c7068034-d93c-4437-8946-aebddf0d1b6f

134: Creative Self Care with Crystal McLain
Grounded in Maine
02/25/25 • 55 min
Crystal McLain and I go back a few years, and she's been a great source of much needed "woo" in my world, and that has saved my bacon what feels like a million times. So I'm sharing one of my personal sustainability resources here... Crystal is a licensed Massage Therapist slash podcaster - her podcast has the same title as this episode. Her episodes are easy to listen to and forgiving. And I'll say it until I die, she has the cutest giggle. I personally am afraid of being seen as an imposter of someone who has their crap together, but she has magical powers and can see right through it. She's kind and has gentle suggestions to help. You'll see!
I've shared her reels on Instagram several times, because they are exactly what I needed to hear, hoping it would reach someone else, too.
Do you have a "woo" person, or practice in your life, to keep yourself in check so you can keep on keepin' on? Send me a message and let me know what/who yours is. Feel free to let Crystal know, too - she'd love it!
Crystal's message she wants you to leave with: "YOU have the power to create a healthier, empowered, and more fulfilling human experience."

119: Peace House Studio: Sustainable Children's Clothing That Lasts!
Grounded in Maine
11/12/24 • 40 min
I'm talking with Nick Bergmann of Peace House Studio- Nick and his spouse Kate are creating children's clothes that can be bought back when outgrown and patched up and passed onto a new child with even more fun personality! (check out the cutie patootie top in the cover, and also in my Instagram promo!)
We talk about the start of Peace House Studio, and the Three Pillars of sustainability: people, planet and profit, and what that means to them. We also discuss Organic vs. sustainability: Does organic always mean better or has it morphed into a marketing term? This is a deep subject, but one Peace House Studio cares deeply about and is working with; should they purchase organic cotton from India and have it travel across the world, or prioritize less travel and work with more local providers in this country? This is the organic conversation they're having.
I loved this conversation with Nick, learning about the clothing startup processes and thought patterns, their trials and goals, and how transparent they are about sustainability.
You can find Peace House Studio at their website https://www.peacehousestudio.com/
They showcase some beautiful clothes on their Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/peacehousestudio/
They're also on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/peacehouseME/

132: Cleaner, Safer Water with Mark Miller
Grounded in Maine
02/11/25 • 47 min
I really enjoyed learning about Cleaner Safer Water from Mark Miller, the CEO and Founder of this affordable, lifetime water filtration system. It just makes sense to have something like this in case of power outage. I'm still in awe of not having to buy filters for it ever, AND that it can provider water for up to 300 people! 1 system could take care of a whole neighborhood!
Mark tells us all about the system, and gives some examples of how it works, and how helpful it has been for people who have it. These are Mark's words:
"There is now a guaranteed way for you to have pure water for life. Enough for you, your family, and up to 300 other people in any emergency no matter how long it lasts. Even if there is no electricity. And a way to help the ecosystem by drastically reducing the number of plastic water bottles. You can now have better health with pure water for life and always be prepared for any emergency." You know I'm all about the reducing plastic water bottles part; but providing water to 300 neighbors is pretty attractive!

136: Learning About Solar Thermal with Dan Razumovsky
Grounded in Maine
03/11/25 • 64 min
Do you know about Solar Thermal energy?? I didn't, either; I've heard of solar panels, solar farms, Community Solar... but not solar thermal. Enter Dan Razumovski, of Sun Catch Solar Thermal, out of Colorado! This might be more of a business or farm purchase- they're pricy, and take up a good amount of space, but it's a newer technology- and it's very cool! It stores electricity, so that if power goes out, you can still power your home for a week!
If you're interested in solar thermal, though, Dan's company will help you to fill out grant applications and apply for tax breaks for updating, which, I could be wrong, but I haven't heard that many companies offer this service.

39: Big Living on a Tiny Homestead With Jenny Boghun
Grounded in Maine
03/28/23 • 38 min
Jenny was the first person I asked to be a guest on the podcast over 2 years ago, and we've had life stuff that has just conflicted, so this moment, finally getting to sit down and talk homesteading and sustainability and record it for me was just everything.
I met Jenny through a friend on Facebook and I just instantly loved her. I first went to her house to pick up a couple of gourd birdhouses from her, and her chickens at the time ran up to my car to greet me. The first time I actually met her, she showed me her beautiful place, with some furniture she had just thrifted and was fixing up - she's always got big projects under way - and we talked for a long time (she also has a NY accent that just makes you feel embraced). She is just full of smart tips to make life enjoyable. I'm going to have her back to go over the list of 23 Frugal Tips list, because she said she learned every one of them as a child!
Jenny also has a tiny house on her property that was just featured on a Tiny House show, and is trying out renting it this year - learn about it, and her, when you listen!

89: Rite of Passage Guide Nicholas Wasierski
Grounded in Maine
04/09/24 • 63 min
Grounded in Maine is thrilled to be partnering with Connor Tyson to support listeners with financial coaching. Connect with Coach Connor Tyson of Progress Solutions LLC here: https://bit.ly/48eM9Mc
Nicholas Wasierski reached out when I sent out an SOS after my "tech" issues (cat) and had to schedule re-dos for 3 conversations, and it took me a bit to understand what his practices are - in my defense, there are so many... But when he said he was a Rite of Passage Guide, I expected it to be more of a wilderness guide - boy was I wrong, and boy am I fascinated with this now! I was so close to asking for more context (a bit of a sample session), but I thought it might be too. long for you all to listen to in one sitting. But I plan to, and you can, once you get a taste here, too!
Nicholas is also an Herbalist, and quotes Hippocrates saying "Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food."
The 2 of these practices go together well, and serve his message that I added below - this is the message he hopes you'll leave this episode with more knowledge and curiosity of:
Humans' connection to the natural world.
Sustainability with how we manage our energy.

36: Asia Sharif Clark - the Benefits of Growing Your Own Fresh Herbs
Grounded in Maine
03/07/23 • 53 min
Asia Sharif-Clark is a beautiful soul with so much sparkle - you'll see - I think sparkly fits perfectly! Asia has worked in many capacities in her time, and learned so much - including the benefit of having something grow in your space... Now her focus is teaching people about those benefits, and to make it easy enough to become a reality. She's passionate about finding a place to grow something, whether it be a small garden, a container garden, and having fresh produce to eat - I may have taken her on a little tangent about schools... She's offering a kitchen herb garden workshop coming up on March 18 on Zoom - I took her February workshop, and now I have little cilantro babies growing beside my desk, and tiny little oregano and basil, too! Listen to the episode to get all the deets!
Asia is just such a wealth of life experience and knowledge, and I can't wait for another chance to hang out with her. I highly recommend following Asia on Instagram, for a feed full of green!
