What is Grounded in Maine about?
Grounded in Maine is an open conversation about how we show up for the world. We're talking about sustainability, and my goal is to have people feel encouraged to be creative about sustainability, even if we can't afford a huge farm or solar power covering the property, anything we do will be part of the solution.

117: Jr Sparrow: WV Uncommonplace
Grounded in Maine
10/29/24 • 57 min
Jr Sparrow and I have been friends for a couple of years, but have talked more since I've moved to his home state - even though he doesn't live here now, he's got lots of memories here (and his mom), so he's sharing all kinds of good tips with me. We talk about soil, critters - cute and less cute, and his first sustainability venture as a young person cleaning up after race track events (there's a pro race track less than 15 minutes from me). He is a real wealth of knowledge!
Jr has 3 (THREE) podcasts: WV Uncommonplace, WV Uncommonplace Interviews and Sessions, and Sparrows Under Review. There's even a 4th, that he's not sure the name of ( it's WV Uncommonplace Presents), and they're all different - don't ask me how he keeps track of what goes where, because I'm overwhelmed sometimes with just one... He has a job, too-
Jr's site for all access to him is here: https://linktr.ee/wvuncommonplace?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid= c7068034-d93c-4437-8946-aebddf0d1b6f

Replenova is a fantastic farm store in Durham, Maine - it's where I make Amy's Garden Jams, and my main retail space. Gary, the owner, is generous with his space, and the fact that Replenova even exists is out of his passion for feeding people. Listen in to learn more about Replenova, and Gary's journey to get here, here!
"The responsibility of agriculture is to feed people." This quote hangs on the wall at Replenova and inspires me week after week while I'm there.

106: The Schoolhouse Life - Homesteading with Lacey Grim
Grounded in Maine
08/13/24 • 53 min
Whew, this conversation was so good! Lacey and her husband are homesteading in North Carolina, and I noticed they're in a town that I was actually really hoping to find a house in, so that felt kind of Kismet to start off - but there's just so much more that she does that resonates and interests me!
My favorite thing we talked about was the food clubs they're organizing to help make sure their community has access to healthy, fresh, local food. How awesome is that? I'll be heading to visit them once I'm settled to see what they've got going on, and how I can take part/contribute to the food club, and I'm so excited about that!
They also are teaching their children the ins and outs of homesteading, like using whole animal, and why that's important. Also the value of community (you know I love that!) and taking care of each other. Lacey is so smart, and she and her husband Drew host their own podcast called The Schoolhouse Life, where they talk about these same things and more.
I learned so much from talking with Lacey! Listen here for the conversation-

32: Words of Wisdom From The Reluctant Gardener Carmen Leal
Grounded in Maine
02/07/23 • 48 min
This episode with Carmen was so beautiful, and a little long (we were totally geeking out about our love for dogs), so I opted to cut it a little short, to save some money. If you want to geek out with us, I'll be posting the FULL video interview on my new YouTube page ! Carmen was so easy to talk with, and has so much to share - I couldn't bare to not share such wisdom in one form or another.
Carmen is an author of now 11 books, and Created her own publishing company, Wag Away Publishing! Her most recent book is titled I Chose You: Imperfectly Perfect Rescue Dogs and Their Humans. it's the first of a series of 3 books about rescue dogs! We talked about how we could incorporate rescuing dogs into the sustainability subject, and decided it's totally legit. She also had some fun surprise sustainability surprises for me - listen to hear more!

36: Asia Sharif Clark - the Benefits of Growing Your Own Fresh Herbs
Grounded in Maine
03/07/23 • 53 min
Asia Sharif-Clark is a beautiful soul with so much sparkle - you'll see - I think sparkly fits perfectly! Asia has worked in many capacities in her time, and learned so much - including the benefit of having something grow in your space... Now her focus is teaching people about those benefits, and to make it easy enough to become a reality. She's passionate about finding a place to grow something, whether it be a small garden, a container garden, and having fresh produce to eat - I may have taken her on a little tangent about schools... She's offering a kitchen herb garden workshop coming up on March 18 on Zoom - I took her February workshop, and now I have little cilantro babies growing beside my desk, and tiny little oregano and basil, too! Listen to the episode to get all the deets!
Asia is just such a wealth of life experience and knowledge, and I can't wait for another chance to hang out with her. I highly recommend following Asia on Instagram, for a feed full of green!

114: Natalie Hodge - The Misadventures of a First Time Foodscaper
Grounded in Maine
10/08/24 • 55 min
Natalie Hodge is my very first Virginia podcast guest since moving here, and I'm so excited to share our conversation with you! She just recently (this year!) started gardening in containers, and she is HOOKED! I love her story of how and why she started, and how excited she gets talking about growing her own food on her balcony - and hearing about her future plans-- "they" say in the homesteading world that chickens are the gateway drug to farming, but growing your own food brings out a very special experience that hooks you in as well! I didn't ask, but I wonder how long until she calls herself a "plant lady" or "plant mom?"
I joined a few Facebook groups before moving to VA, and I happened to see Natalie posting about her Foodscapes program on the local news, and I felt I needed to reach out to her. We learned so much about each other in our first Zoom meeting, and I was just obsessed with her story of not being able to grow anything until she spent time with them - the plant people will understand what we mean--
I couldn't possibly leave out her awesome message that she hopes you'll take away from this conversation - "Keep it simple...small changes matter." LOVE this - it's so true!
Natalie has her own media company called Rudy's Girl Media, and she's been working with a Zero Waste program theough the VA Public Media to produce her Foodscapes segment. She's got new stuff coming out very soon (I think this week?!)!

89: Rite of Passage Guide Nicholas Wasierski

04/09/24 • 63 min
Grounded in Maine is thrilled to be partnering with Connor Tyson to support listeners with financial coaching. Connect with Coach Connor Tyson of Progress Solutions LLC here: https://bit.ly/48eM9Mc
Nicholas Wasierski reached out when I sent out an SOS after my "tech" issues (cat) and had to schedule re-dos for 3 conversations, and it took me a bit to understand what his practices are - in my defense, there are so many... But when he said he was a Rite of Passage Guide, I expected it to be more of a wilderness guide - boy was I wrong, and boy am I fascinated with this now! I was so close to asking for more context (a bit of a sample session), but I thought it might be too. long for you all to listen to in one sitting. But I plan to, and you can, once you get a taste here, too!
Nicholas is also an Herbalist, and quotes Hippocrates saying "Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food."
The 2 of these practices go together well, and serve his message that I added below - this is the message he hopes you'll leave this episode with more knowledge and curiosity of:
Humans' connection to the natural world.
Sustainability with how we manage our energy.

25: Off-Grid Adventures with the Adventuresome Bill Yeo
Grounded in Maine
12/06/22 • 38 min
Podcasting is so cool! I am so excited that I was able to have this conversation with Bill Yeo- he's so smart and interesting - there will DEFINITELY be more convos with Bill!
Bill is the Community person at LL Bean, which is probably in the top 5 (if not top 3) things people think about when they hear Maine mentioned - hunting, fishing, biking and skiing equipment and clothing - a real outdoors store
Bill built his own house TWICE - both with solar power - he said he's never paid an electric bill in 31 years! Listen to how this all happened!

35: Learning About Spirit Bears and Sustainable Book Publishing with Crystal McIntyre
Grounded in Maine
02/28/23 • 44 min
Crystal McIntyre and I met not too long ago on Instagram - I had noticed a calendar of hers on the website of a store in Squamish, BC. When I asked about it, I was directed to her Instagram, and the rest is about as you might expect. But then I learned about Human Design. And Spirit Bears. And sustainable book publishing. Are you thinking "what's Human Design?" I was, too. I thought I had an idea what Spirit Bears were, but no. Crystal taught me so much that I had never even heard of - learn with me by listening here! Or watch on YouTube(you can see her adorable cat Winnie!)
