33. The Emotions of Change: What Brené Brown in Atlas of the Heart and the Tao of Leadership Tell Us
09/15/22 • 20 min
Yo shares her journey as she shifts her career to academia and all the emotions she’s noticed along the way. Her hope is that you’ll notice these emotions as you pass through your own emotions of change. To help things along she references the following Atlas of the Heart chapters:
Places we go when things are uncertain or too much: Stress, Overwhelm, Anxiety, Worry, Avoidance, Excitement, Dread, Fear, and Vulnerability.
She was trying hard to avoid:
Places we go when we fall short: shame, self-compassion, perfectionism, guilt, humiliation, embarrassment.
But she could see herself going to:
Places we go when it’s beyond us: Awe, Wonder, Confusion, Curiosity, Interest, Surprise
All the time hoping to get to:
Places we go when the heart is open (love & trust) or Places we go when life is good (joy, happiness).
These were a couple quotes she found helpful:
“To be authentic, we must cultivate the courage to be imperfect—and vulnerable. We have to believe that we are fundamentally worthy of love and acceptance, just as we are. I've learned that there is no better way to invite more grace, gratitude and joy into our lives than by mindfully practicing authenticity.”
“By cultivating our courage to be who we are uncensored, compassion to others and to ourselves, and connections with people through both good times and bad, we can begin to recognize our self-worth and live with meaning and satisfaction. We can be us, exactly as we are, and go through life with confidence and joy.”
There are two podcasts mentioned in the episode that could also be a valuable references about change:
Raising Vibrant Kids (Rachael Blair), Episode 26, “Navigating Change”.
UnScripted (Rachel Brumberger), Episode 40, “Your Late Summer Meditation is Here!”
Shout out to Whitney Baker, Electric Ideas Podcast, for her idea to ask my students "What Brand Would You Be"?
