Girl, Take the Lead!

Girl, Take the Lead!

Yolanda Canny

Each week we explore Womanhood and Leadership with the goal to question the status quo and challenge our thinking so we celebrate every woman as a leader. Our episodes will interview leaders in the field, meet authors, explore books on the subject, hear inspiring stories, or talk with organizations leading the charge for women to lead. We’ll look at the different topics from different generational perspectives as my daughters, a Millennial and a Gen Z, will join me, a Boomer, from time to time. We hope to make you laugh and leave inspired as you hear our voices on this very important topic.

Girl, Take the Lead! - 4. What is power to women?

4. What is power to women?

Girl, Take the Lead!

02/16/22 • 29 min

In this episode we explore the following questions:

  • How do we recognize female power? And what are the sometimes funny, frightening stories we tell ourselves about it?
  • What are the cultural underpinnings of misogyny in politics or the workplace, and its forms? How and why do conventional definitions of “power” (or for that matter of knowledge, expertise and authority) that we carry round in our heads exclude women? What about metaphors we use regularly?
  • How do we judge women’s success? By what metrics?
  • We discuss this quote from pg 89 of the book: “But this is still treating power as something elite...this is treating power very narrowly, as an object of possession that only the few – mostly men – can own or wield...On those terms, women are excluded from it. You cannot easily fit women into a structure that is already coded as male; you have to change the structure. That means thinking about power differently. It means decoupling it from public prestige. It means thinking collaboratively, about the power of followers not just of leaders. It means, above all, thinking about power as an attribute or even a verb (“to power”), not as a possession.”
  • Why the popular resonance of “mansplaining”? It hits home for us because it points straight to what it feels like not be taken seriously, like someone lecturing you on your expertise in policy over a dinner date!

Our key take-ways we valued from our discussion are the following:

  • Questioning the use of our own use of metaphors like “shattering the glass ceiling”.
  • Questioning the definition of “power”.
  • Gratitude for the previous generations who opened the doors for others to go through.

In today’s episode we are joined by Andrea Canny, award-winning actor, director and producer who specializes in one-to-one and master class vocal performance coaching. She was voted the vocalist of the decade by broadwayworld.com in 2020.

We will provide a multi-generational perspective on voice, how we sound and more importantly, what we say.

We discuss surprise situations when we’re caught off-guard in “surprise attacks” and provide strategies to avoid reacting in the moment which can lead to words stuck in your throat or tears of frustration.

We talk about practices to advocate for ourselves so we are able to lead.

Our takeaways included:

· The voices that are most powerful come from sincerity and honesty. We can embrace our own vulnerability and find strength in it.

· That walking away from a tense moment is a valued form of communication – voice doesn’t always have to be verbal.

· We express gratitude for the generations that have led the way.

· We remain optimistic given you can practice being in tough situations, particularly if you’re a recovering people-pleaser.

Sarah Crandall, a member of the Holly Springs/Fuquay-Varina And Apex Liberal Ladies organization, joins Yo to discuss what they do to support their community by promoting progressive values.

Here’s a little bit about the politics of North Carolina (source: Wikipedia):

Like most U.S. states, North Carolina is politically dominated by the Democratic and Republican political parties. North Carolina has 13 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and two seats in the U.S. Senate. North Carolina has voted for the Republican candidate in nine of the last 10 presidential elections; the one exception was in 2008, when a plurality of North Carolinians voted for Barack Obama. Conversely, North Carolina has mostly elected Democratic governors in its history; only four Republican governors have been elected since Reconstruction, and of those only one served two terms.

Here are the questions we explored:

  • How did she come to join the Liberal Ladies of Holly Springs organization?
  • What inspired her to become an activist?
  • What is the history/mission of Liberal Ladies?
  • What activities does the organization undertake?
  • How many members in the organization?
  • Are there other chapters?

It’s a trip back to Alemany High School Class of ’72 with Terri, Cindy, Sharon, Janey, and Colleen, who join Yo, also from the Alemany Class of ‘72, to share what they’d tell their younger selves and young women today. All of us had been on a committee to plan our 50th reunion with Janey leading the way and there was so much love, understanding, and support for each other – no matter who we were in high school.

Here are the questions we explored:

· Who did we see ourselves being in high school?

· Who are we now?

· What would you tell yourself, or another young woman, about your learning along the way?

· What was the experience like for you on the reunion committee?

· Why should others attend (and help plan) their class reunions?

"It's the oldest story in the world. One day you're seventeen and planning for someday, and then quietly and without you ever really noticing, someday is today, and that someday is yesterday. And this is your life." — One Tree Hill

In this episode you learn more about our podcast and the direction of our episodes and format. You’ll learn the basic foundation of our definition of leadership that guides all our content. It ends with the following quote:

“I sat down with the universe and told her I wanted to grow. I told her to use me as a vessel. So she made me uncomfortable. She stripped me of everything I knew. Made me learn how to be silent, how to let go, how to move on, how to stand my ground, how to be more understanding, how to fight, how to survive, how to be more assertive, more loving, less naïve, She told me to take everything I have learned and share it with others.” The Minds Journal

We hope you’ll join our journey and be inspired to listen to other episodes!

Girl, Take the Lead! - 32. Exploring John Heider's Book: The Tao of Leadership
play

09/01/22 • 8 min

This week we try something a little different. We went to about 500 B.C.E. with Lao Tsu’s Tao Te Ching which was adapted by John Heider and first published in 1985. There have been many translations of the ancient Chinese wisdom and Heider has probably the best adaptation on Leadership. Perhaps you’ll recognize some of the stories Yo reads or feel their familiarity in quotes we’ll often see today on FB, IG or Tik Tok.

Here’s a bit more about the author John Heider:

John Heider graduated from Harvard College in 1960, and was awarded a Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology from Duke University in 1968. He returned to Lawrence, Kansas in 1971-1973, then again in 1987. John is a seminal figure in the Human Potential Movement. He worked at Esalen Institute, founded the Human Potential School of Mendocino, and led personal growth and training groups for over 40 years. He wrote The Tao of Leadership in 1985; since then it has been translated into 10 languages. This was followed by The Tao of Daily Living in 2000.

Here’s a link to the book at Amazon.

We hope you’ll be left inspired and ready for a meditation. So grab a cup of tea and take a few minutes to quietly indulge and center yourself. Enjoy!!

Yo shares her journey as she shifts her career to academia and all the emotions she’s noticed along the way. Her hope is that you’ll notice these emotions as you pass through your own emotions of change. To help things along she references the following Atlas of the Heart chapters:

Places we go when things are uncertain or too much: Stress, Overwhelm, Anxiety, Worry, Avoidance, Excitement, Dread, Fear, and Vulnerability.

She was trying hard to avoid:

Places we go when we fall short: shame, self-compassion, perfectionism, guilt, humiliation, embarrassment.

But she could see herself going to:

Places we go when it’s beyond us: Awe, Wonder, Confusion, Curiosity, Interest, Surprise

All the time hoping to get to:

Places we go when the heart is open (love & trust) or Places we go when life is good (joy, happiness).

These were a couple quotes she found helpful:

“To be authentic, we must cultivate the courage to be imperfect—and vulnerable. We have to believe that we are fundamentally worthy of love and acceptance, just as we are. I've learned that there is no better way to invite more grace, gratitude and joy into our lives than by mindfully practicing authenticity.”

“By cultivating our courage to be who we are uncensored, compassion to others and to ourselves, and connections with people through both good times and bad, we can begin to recognize our self-worth and live with meaning and satisfaction. We can be us, exactly as we are, and go through life with confidence and joy.”

There are two podcasts mentioned in the episode that could also be a valuable references about change:

Raising Vibrant Kids (Rachael Blair), Episode 26, “Navigating Change”.

UnScripted (Rachel Brumberger), Episode 40, “Your Late Summer Meditation is Here!”

Shout out to Whitney Baker, Electric Ideas Podcast, for her idea to ask my students "What Brand Would You Be"?

This episode is for anyone that wants to speak up, create and lead and as Tara Mohr says it’s Playing Big, the title of her book which was named a best book of the year by Apple’s iBooks.

Tara Mohr is an expert on women’s leadership and well-being. She is the creator and teacher of the global Playing Big leadership program for women, and of the Playing Big Facilitators Training for coaches, therapists, managers, and mentors. She is a Co-Active Training Institute certified coach with an MBA from Stanford University and an undergraduate degree in English literature from Yale and lives in San Francisco with her husband and three children.

We’ll be covering the first couple chapters about our inner critic and voice of our inner wisdom which she calls our inner mentor.

Here are 3 takeaways from today’s episode:

1. Everyone has an inner critic and it can hold us back from playing big.

2. Naming and becoming aware of that critic is Step One in playing big.

3. Having a relationship with our inner critic is a lifelong journey but as we make peace with that part of us, our intuitive self or inner mentor, can immerge which can help and comfort us on that journey!

Mentioned in the Episode:

Book: Playing Big by Tara Mohr

Book: Name, Claim, & Reframe by Andrea Mein DeWitt

Ep 48, A Discussion with Andrea Mein DeWitt About Her Book: Name Claim and Reframe, Your Path to a Well-Lived Life
