Get Obsessed : With Living Your Best Life

What is loneliness?

Brené Brown, the author of Atlas of the Heart (a book we are obsessed with), defines loneliness as:

The absence of meaningful social interaction—an intimate relationship, friendships, family gatherings, or even community or work group connections.

Today the world appears to be becoming more and more disconnected, with the cracks between people, races, genders, ethnicities, political beliefs, religions, and philosophies widening at an alarming rate. But, when we look deeper, this disconnection and the political and economic machines that are moving people apart are ironically spawning movements bringing people closer together than ever.

People are united in their humanity, joined by their hearts, by their desire for a better world, and the sincere wish to help others who are less fortunate. It takes tremendous strength and courage to remain open-hearted and vulnerable in the world we live in today. And yet, to survive, we must lead from the heart. And we must belong to ourselves.

Loneliness is disconnection (versus being alone). We are social creatures, and in today's climate, it is easier and easier to become disconnected, which leads to loneliness. In Tia's case, she suffered immense grief after her sister's death. And she disconnected from all those around her. She was surrounded by many people - yet felt a deep loneliness.

In this episode, Tia and Julie share their insights and stories about facing the feeling of loneliness and how it leads to disconnection – and how to pick yourself up from being lonely and disconnected.

This episode is dedicated to Shelby Sandahl, a loving sister to Tia who has touched many people's lives.

What is humiliation?

Brene Brown, the author of Atlas of the Heart (a book we are obsessed with), defines humiliation as:

The intensely painful feeling that we have been unjustly degraded, ridiculed, or put down, and that our identity has been demeaned or devalued.

Almost everyone has experienced the sensation of being humiliated. It's a feeling of helplessness, embarrassment, and rejection. Humiliation can quickly determine how we view ourselves in the years to come.

Dr. Cobb shares her own humiliation experiences and how they negatively impacted her life -- which extended to personal problems, eating disorders, and alcoholism.

For Dr. Cobb, humiliation doesn't necessarily have to be what other people see as it takes place in our minds and how it manifests in our bodies. But fortunately, she shares insights on how to get out of it!

Dr. Laura Cobb is a life coach who empowers high-achieving women to rid themselves of fear, guilt, and shame to proudly and confidently suit up, show up, step up, and speak up at every opportunity. She sees herself as an ordinary woman making extraordinary choices one day at a time.

What is empathy?

Brené Brown, author of Atlas of the Heart (a book we are obsessed with), defines empathy as:

A skill set that is one of the most powerful tools of compassion.

Empathy and compassion are related but distinct concepts since both involve understanding another person's situation. The concept of empathy is rooted in identifying, relating, and being present to another person's feelings. It does not necessarily mean you feel the same thing that the other person is feeling.

In this episode, Kevin Henry joins us in exploring and understanding all facets of empathy. For Kevin, people fear the feeling of empathy since it makes us more vulnerable and makes us remember specific occurrences in the past.

He also gives tips regarding opening ourselves to other perspectives, allowing us to feel empathy fully. Kevin pointed out that disallowing ourselves in doing this opens the door to more fear, anxiety, and nonacceptance towards other people.

Kevin is changing the narrative of how people navigate their lives with his 30 years of experience in Program Management, Diversity-Equity-Inclusion education, journalism, training, writing, acting fields, public speaking, and as the host of All The Way Authentic podcast.
