It’s always nice when an old friend gets into podcasting. We recently had Eli Lake on, he’s now the host of the fantastic The Re-Education with Eli Lake, and now I get to have on an old FUTUREPROOF favorite who’s now hosting a brand new podcast by the Harvard Business School. The debut season of Deep Purpose features captivating conversations between host Ranjay Gulati and top global CEOs, such as Unilever CEO Alan Jope and Walgreen-Boots Alliance CEO Rosalind Brewer, about their personal paths to finding purpose and how those journeys benefited their businesses and beyond.

We talk to Ranjay about what purpose actually means, whether or not the successful companies of tomorrow truly will be driven by purpose, and whether or not being purpose driven can make a leader better able to stick to their "north star."

It’s a new year! And everyone is excited about developing their best selves in the new year. To that end, I wanted to speak to designer, innovator, best-selling author, and life coach Ayse Birsel.

Through her workshops and writing, Ayse has helped thousands of people design their work and lives, and I really wanted to get the chance to share her methods with our audience.

Ayse is one of the world’s leading industrial designers—and her latest book which hit shelves in December, Design the Long Life You Love: A Step-by-Step Guide to Love, Purpose, Well-Being, and Friendship, draws on key principles of design - optimism, empathy, collaboration, open-mindedness, and holistic thinking - as well as the experiences of older people on the pioneering frontiers of long life.
You can subscribe to Ayse's newsletter here: https://www.aysebirsel.com/newsletter

There are some things that have been part of society forever—like selling. And the art of persuasion. But how are those things changing in the wake of new technologies like automation and AI? Are these very human skills now obsolete—or more useful than ever?

To figure that out, we thought we’d turn to Colin Coggins and Garrett Brown. They teach Sales Mindset for Entrepreneurs at USC Marshall School of Business, and they’ve written a new book, THE UNSOLD MINDSET: Redefining What It Means to Sell. It’s a great book that's helpful for people who sell, which is all of us.
This book isn’t just for people who have a career in sales. We spoke to Colin and Garett about the emotional mindset of great salespeople, if the qualities that make a good salesperson are changing, and the role that technology is playing in transforming sales—and if that’s for the better or the worse.

One of the topics I get asked about often these days is NFTs, digital goods, and virtual goods, which are overlapping topics and not exactly the same thing—well, you asked, and we listened. Let’s talk about that, shall we? I asked Leading Commerce expert, Holden Bale, Group Vice President & Head of Commerce at Huge, a global experience company I’ve covered for years—and even lost pitches to back when I ran an agency, but that’s another story. Holden lives and breathes this topic so you’re absolutely going to learn today about the future of digital goods, whether or not these are a fad or a long-term trend, which companies are innovating in this arena, and much more.

Encore presentation!
I don’t know how much time you spend thinking about things like how people move around cities and how inefficient urban mobility can be, but it’s admittedly something I’ve been thinking about since I developed the logo and branding for autonomous driving startup Mobileye, now part of Intel. How people get around, and even how we park, is an essential part of the future we live in. To that end, I wanted to speak to Alex Israel. He’s the CEO co-founder of Metropolis, the autonomous commerce platform disrupting the traditional real estate industry to make way for urban mobility - starting with the dirty underbelly of parking. I wanted to talk to Alex about his computer vision-based solution and autonomous vehicles in general, so I’m looking forward to this chat.

Cathy O'Neil is a mathematician, data scientist, and author. She’s written books on data science, including the New York Times best-seller Weapons of Math Destruction, which is an influential source for the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence community—and where I first started following her work.

She’s now the author of The Shame Machine: Who Profits in the New Age of Humiliation, which just came out a week or two back, and I’m excited to talk to her all about it, including what exactly a shame machine is, what’s the difference between punching up and punching down, and even if shame can be a good think and lead to societal growth.

Gretchen Rubin is one of today’s most influential and thought-provoking observers of happiness and human nature. She’s the author of many books, including multiple New York Times bestsellers—her books have sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages.

On her top-ranking, award-winning podcast Happier with Gretchen Rubin, she discusses happiness and good habits with her sister Elizabeth Craft. She is a regular columnist for O, The Oprah Magazine and makes regular appearances on CBS This Morning.

She’s also a sought-after collaborator, and recently partnered with Oracle on some really interesting research about...you guessed it, happiness. So I’m excited to talk to her about that today.

When we first heard about Joe Brew and Hyfe, I knew we had to schedule a FUTUREPROOF. Conversation. Originally from Florida, Joe’s work in public health has led him all over the world to tackle some of the biggest global health issues such as malaria and tuberculosis. His background in data science makes him an integral member of the team at Hyfe, where he’s a co-founder and CEO. With Hyfe’s sophisticated AI cough detection technology, anyone with a smartphone can track and analyze their respiratory patterns.

I’m talking to Joe today about data science, the need for expanding healthcare access and services for the global poor, why coughs are rich with medical information, and the future of global health in general.

One of the things we discuss on this show often is what the future will look like. Another key theme we keep coming back to is how individuals and companies can increase their impact so they can build the future they’re looking to create.

To that end, there was a book that came out right at the beginning of the year you might’ve missed, and I sure hope you didn’t. The book is SMART GROWTH: How to Grow Your People to Grow Your Company, and it’s by Whitney Johnson, who’s CEO of Disruption Advisors, #8 on the Thinkers50 list of leading business thinkers in the world, and host of the popular Disrupt Yourself podcast. I talk to her about the concept of Smart Growth, how individuals and companies take stock of where they are now in order to help figure out where they ought to go next, how the Great Resignation is tied into the ideas she discusses in her book, and much more.

At the end of the day, so much of society is focused on consumerism– but how do you make the right decisions about what to sell and how to sell it if you don’t understand consumers in a meaningful way?

We’re excited to be talking to my personal favorite Kraskinski brother. Prior to co-founding Epicenter Experience, Paul Krasinski served as an SVP at SessionM, acquired by Mastercard, and at Arbitron, later acquired by Nielsen. Paul's developed and refined a deep understanding for the consumer perspective, developed insight services and the industry relationships required to revolutionize how brands and consumers connect.
