Forward Into The Past is a podcast that brings classic tales of suspense, mystery, science fiction, and fiction from the public domain to the modern listener. Each episode features a full-length story, narrated by host J.C. Rede.

The stories featured on Forward Into The Past were originally published in dime novels, story papers, and magazines from the late 1890s to the early 1930s. These stories are a product of their time, and may contain themes, words, and ideas that are no longer considered acceptable. However, they are also a fascinating window into the past, and offer a glimpse into the hopes, fears, and dreams of a bygone era.

Whether you're a fan of classic literature or just looking for a good story, Forward Into The Past is a podcast you won't want to miss. New episodes are released every week.

In this episode, Nick Carter investigates the murder of an old man, who is later identified as Alfred Lawrence, a man who had been convicted of forgery and spent 10 years in State's Prison. However, Mr. Peter Wright, who identifies the body, believes Lawrence to be innocent, and Nick sets out to find the truth.
With the help of Wright's information, Nick discovers that Lawrence's wife and child disappeared after his imprisonment, and that he left prison with only $10, not the wad of money that the barkeeper at the Red Dragon Inn claimed to have seen.
Nick follows the trail to the old Lawrence home on Beach Street, the train depot where Lawrence arrived, and The Manhattan Safe Deposit Company, where Lawrence had been loaned $200. The manager of the company confirms that he knew Lawrence personally and believes he may have been framed.
As Nick puzzles over the case, Wright tells him of a strange encounter he had with a young woman claiming to be Isabella Porter, who gave Wright a package with the name Edward Peters written on it. Wright initially denies receiving the package, but later reveals that he found it in his room at the Continental Hotel.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger as Nick opens the mysterious package, leaving listeners to wonder what clues it may hold in solving the case.

This episode continues our sci-fi theme: The short story "Grounded" was written by William Sambrot in 1957 - a rare mid-50's piece of public domain literature, and worthy of a Twilight Zone episode.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

As a professional voice actor, it's important that I keep my chops up. So, I decided to narrate old classic public domain stories aloud on a podcast. That's pretty much why. I also just wanted to see if I could do it.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

Gain? Not much. Maybe an appreciation of old classic stories. Sometimes it's nice to revisit the past. Mainly I just hope to entertain a few people.

Which episode should someone start with?

Honestly, I didn't find Nick Carter's voice until the second story, that would be episode 7 - Nick Carter's Ghost Story. Listen to The French Cafe for setup reasons, but I found my stride beginning with episode 7.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

The Nick Carter mysteries hold high esteem and a special place in my heart. However, my absolute favorite episode is The Shadow of Christmas Present, episode 23. I have a special fondness for Christmas, and this story hit all the right feels. You can hear it in my delivery.

Which episode are you most proud of?

The two Edgar Allan Poe stories, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado, episodes 19 and 20, are quite special to me, since they were part of the first show I did as a paid actor, so it was a bit of a coming home moment. As I mentioned above, The Shadow of Christmas Present, episode 23, is one I am extremely proud of, from beginning to end.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

Madison on the Air is absolutely clever as heck. Find that one. Listen to it. Canary P.I. is another amazing detective audio drama. Hits all the right notes. Inspirational Living is 30 minutes of positive essay to help get through this messy world. and eTown is a fantastic journey into a laid-back positive musical world.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

Honestly, I'm a huge nerd and a big fan of The Firesign Theater. They used that phrase in one of my favorite episodes and I snatched it. It also fits because we - as reader and listener together - are taking a journey forward into the past. So there. N'yah n'yah n'yah.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm a self-taught actor, a professionally taught voice actor, a natural singer with a penchant for old crooner music, a humanist, an ally and a cat daddy. I'm also a dad joke master. I just want to get through this life, hoping I made a difference somewhere to someone. I think that's all we can ask as humans, n'est pas?
