Episode 7: The Old Bull Approach to PT with Dr. Katie Dabrowski
10/11/22 • 39 min
In episode 7, AZ talks to her dynamo friend Dr. Katie Dabrowski about the Old Bull Athletics approach to physical therapy.
Katie is a Miami based physical therapist, CSCS and instructor in the Neuroscience program at Nova Southeastern University. We talk about a better approach to physical therapy, treating the whole patient as opposed to simply the injured part, the cash-based physical therapy model and the experience that Old Bull provides to patients from youth and top-level athletes to desk warriors and grandmothers.
Katie is passionate about bridging the gap between strength training, injury rehabilitation, and performance to optimize patient outcomes. Her background is in neuroscience and after working in the research world, she earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Miami.
Katie knew she wanted to change the perception of physical therapy and provide a truly individualized, one-on-one, exceptional level of care to create lasting relationships and trust with each patient - this is the mission at Old Bull Athletics. Her focus lies in blending principles of neuroscience, strength and movement, and pain reduction for people of all backgrounds.
She works with all patient populations, and in particular works often with strength athletes (CrossFit, Olympic lifting, powerlifting), personal trainers and coaches, endurance athletes, and individuals with exercise-induced migraines. With a background in collegiate rowing and over 15 years of her own focused strength training, she is adamant about practicing what she preaches.
So what, now what?
You didn’t get injured laying on a table and you’re not going to get better laying on a table either! If you’re a firefighter, you need a physical therapist that gets you back to “better than ever” as opposed to just getting you back to activities of daily living.
The cash-based model ensures that an insurance company doesn’t determine how well you are able to get!

Episode 6: A Mindful Approach to Fire with Wendy Lund
Did you know you could get a DEGREE in Mindfulness Studies?
Well, Wendy Lund did and she’s using that knowledge to help the entire fire service. In today’s episode, Wendy and I talk about weird things Canadians say, her unique degree, how she uses her experience to support Fire and EMS, Reach for Resiliency, #TOBI, and her business Wellth Management, LLC.
With over 3 decades of experience as a Professor of Health Sciences, Wendy understands the physiology and pathophysiology of ease and dis-ease. She became increasingly concerned over the educational gap that existed in preparing first responders to engage with trauma and tragedy and the growing numbers of death by suicides in vulnerable populations.
Motivated to fill this gap, Wendy went back to school herself in her early 50s. Wendy’s graduation in 2017 from the University of Aberdeen makes her one of very few globally with an MSc in Mindfulness Studies. Her research built a case for why proactive strategies matter in training and sustaining a resilient mind.
Grateful for her career in academia, she retired early to provide others with an understanding of how to create and cause your mental health, not simply avoid disease.
She founded Wellth Management to fill a gap and to inspire individuals and organizations to redefine wealth using evidence-based theory and strategies to create wellness and build stress tolerance.
So what, now what?
Mindfulness doesn’t have to be hippie-dippy. You can be mindful without even ever closing your eyes! Tiny tweaks in understanding how your mind works can help you navigate scenes skillfully.

Episode 8: Creatine for Firefighters with Dr. Scott Forbes
In this episode, we dive deep into creatine research. My good friend and brainiac, Scott Forbes, PhD tells the world about all the juicy details on this super supplement.
Dr. Scott Forbes’ primary interest is in sport science and has focused on various nutritional and training interventions to enhance athlete performance. In addition, he has expertise in examining nutritional and exercise interventions for optimal muscle and brain health in older adults.
He has worked as a personal trainer as well as an athlete consultant for several professional and varsity level sports teams. Forbes is a preeminent expert in the field of creatine research and lectures internationally on the topic. Scott is an associate professor at Brandon University in Canada.
So what, now what?
There aren’t a lot of supplements that have efficacy, safety, and cost effectiveness, but creatine is certainly one of them. It’s arguably the most widely researched sport supplement on the planet and can not only benefit our muscles, but our bones and brain as well. For firefighter health and wellness, it’s truly a no brainer!
