Finding Wellness

Finding Wellness

Megan Eddinger

The wellness space is cluttered with gurus who swear they have the best solution but the truth is only YOU know what works best for you and your body, mind and spirit. We've been conditioned to think of health as thinness or the absence of illness. But we need to start thinking more holistically beyond just what our body looks and feels like. My goal is to help you look at your whole life: your career, your spirituality, your mental health, your environement, etc. to see how you can support your overall health and wellbeing. Get curious, listen to your body, and start making small shifts today that will have a big impact tomorrow! You are worth the time, money, energy and effort required to live a full, complete, happy and healthy life!

Today we're chatting about PERFECTIONISM, how it shows up in motherhood and what you can do to better manage it. This is not easy. Managing perfectionism is a journey and takes practice. We've spent years building up these walls of perfectionism and we're not going to dismantle them after listening to a single podcast episode. So allow yourself time to adjust and extend yourself some grace when you don't live up to your own expectations.

We're so quick to beat ourselves up and say that we're failing. We're so quick to say nothing is going right and everything is a mess. But when was the last time you actually took inventory of your life and actually defined what success means to you? How can you say you're failing if you haven't even defined what success looks like? You have nothing to measure. Tune in to hear how this perspective shift really made me reflect in the last couple of weeks.

Today we welcome our guests Cindi Michaelson and Crissy Fishbane hosts of the Mama Needs a Moment podcast and founders of HER Health Collective.
HER Health Collective is a small business led by two women with a big social mission to revolutionize the way mothers take care of themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. They are dedicated to improving postpartum care for women in the United States, where maternal outcomes are often ranked last compared to other developed nations. This gap in care is a serious flaw in our healthcare system.

As the founders of HER Health Collective, Cindi and Crissy are motivated by knowledge of this massive flaw in how our healthcare system serves mothers and how it has affected them personally in their own motherhood journeys. They saw a need to provide real support for the mothers in this country and set out to build a system that would better serve them.

HER Health Collective has a two-pronged approach to serving moms. The first key component is their resource network, including a panel of experts and library of vetted content, that provides moms easy access to trusted information. The second key component is our supportive and welcoming community, called HER Circle. This community has been intentionally created to help moms build authentic and genuine relationships with other mothers. They know that if a mom is armed with these two key components - trusted knowledge and a supportive community - she can conquer any challenge.

Today we chat about:

  • Maternal Mental Health
  • The challenge of making friends as an adult but especially moms
  • The Goddess myth: what it is, why it's dangerous, and how we can manage expectations
  • What it means to "take care of yourself" as a mom - we're not just talking bubble baths here
  • Diet culture and it's impact on this generation of moms
  • and SO much more

Join our MARCH Self Care Challenge!

  • Do one small thing (or big thing) every day in March to prioritize your own needs as we move into the spring season.
  • Share what you're doing and track your progress

This week I thought it was important to share my full mental health journey all in one place. I want to remind you that if you feel like you're in a dark spot right now, it does get better. I want to remind you that feeling good one day and feeling like shit the next day is to be expected. I want to remind you that the journey to healing simply is not linear. I want to remind you that practicing good mental health hygiene, even when you're feeling great, is so important to the ongoing state of your mental health.

It feels so good to be back! This episode is a bit of a part two to some earlier episodes so I'll link them below!
Today we're diving into my dutch test results and my experience with gaining fat and losing muscle dispite my best efforts. I wanted to take care of my body but I didn't want to implement and abide by food rules because I was so into anti-diet culture. After working with a personal trainer for a few months I'm finally losing fat and gaining muscle again.

When we're feeling like shit or feeling stuck it's EASY to feel sorry for ourselves or to wish we were further along than we are right now. But I encourage you to look back instead of looking ahead. In what ways are you different today than you were back then? THAT is something to be proud of, something worth celebrating. I know it doesn't come easy to you to recognize your growth so let this be your reminder.

Today's guest speaks from both personal and professional experience making her the best person to speak about this topic. Melissa shares her best tips to create the support system you need as a mom, especially if you don't have a mom yourself.
About Melissa Reilly, Psy.D:
Melissa Reilly, Psy.D. is a mom of two boys, clinical psychologist, and parent coach passionate about helping moms separated from their mother by physical distance, estrangement, or death, move from feelings of insecurity, isolation, and overwhelm to a place of resilience. Through her personal and professional experience, she has come to recognize that Moms without a mom experience grief as part of their motherhood experience, even if they don’t realize it. The relationship moms have had (or didn’t have) with their mothers impacts how they see themselves but doesn’t define them. She believes it isn’t knowledge and skills that create resilience, but rather it is born through overcoming hardship, having a community, and living by one’s values. She is honored to walk with moms on their journey to becoming the mom they always wanted to be. Melissa’s psychological practice, Shoudt & Reilly Psychological Services has been serving residents of Berks County, Pennsylvania for over 22 years. She is now expanding her services to include parent coaching focusing on Moms Without a Mom which can be accessed by women all over the world through her website momswithoutamom.com.
