We’ve got Michelle Cordeiro Grant, the founder of LIVELY, talking us through how she founded and sold her company within 3 quick years for 105 million dollars. I. know. It’s crazy but the story is even crazier. I don’t want to give too much away but we talk through her unique launch that was a combination of strategy and luck, generating 130k emails in 48 hours.

LIVELY is a brand that empowers women and provides a sense of community. They deliver lingerie, activewear, swimwear, loungewear, and self-care that take the best elements of high-style and ultimate comfort from each category to achieve a brand new POV of lingerie called Leisurée.

But it’s more than its product — since launching in 2016, LIVELY has built an Ambassador network of 150,000+ members, opened four retail stores, developed several sustainable product collections, maintained its commitment to “Price Equality,” hosted hundreds of IRL and virtual events, launched a podcast, provided a platform for its community to share their passions and projects, and developed retail partnerships with Nordstrom, Madewell, and Target (launching a diffusion line called All. You. LIVELY with Target.com and select stores).

Growing from its concept stage, to $15m in funding to fuel its growth, all the way to an acquisition of $105M by Wacoal in 2019, LIVELY is poised to grow even more and make bigger and bolder strides towards its mission of inclusivity, community, sustainability, and accessibility. LIVELY is an experience and mindset that reminds, inspires, and enables its customers to live life passionately, purposefully, and confidently, doing what they love, with the people they love.

Today we’re learning from Rosie Jane Johnston, the founder of By Rosie Jane.

By Rosie Jane was founded in 2010 by celebrity makeup artist Rosie Jane Johnston, an Aussie who has made her home in LA. Each fragrance, formulated by Rosie herself, is free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates and phosphates and housed in recycled and recyclable packaging. Her perfumes and body care products are refreshingly simple and ideal for daily wear using the highest quality fragrance oils. We cover her journey to building this brand into a 7 figure company stocked in the likes of Sephora and Thirteen Lune, and the campaign that’s driving her customer acquisition right now.

The thing that really struck me in this episode is Rosie's relentless pursuit in business and getting what she wants, to get By Rosie Jane to where it is today. She really shows us how a no now doesn’t mean a no forever, and it’s all about being open for when that time comes for the no to turn into a yes. That’s where your courage and conviction are. If you are not doing something you truly believe in, you truly love, you’re not going to stay the course. Whatever that is for you, has to be your driving force. There’s something within your entrepreneurial spirit. That’s just in you. It takes 10 years to reach overnight success. And in that time you need to have that persistence and true conviction in what you’re doing. When we look at legacy brands, there are a few key things key they are getting really right. They have these incredible “whys”. They have a lot of struggles in the beginning. They’ve had to change and move with the time and have great failures and still come back, which is so important to have in the entrepreneurial world.

If you love something in this episode please do consider sharing it on Instagram stories and tagging us or leaving us a review to help other ears find us. I’m so grateful for each and every one of you who does this.

Today we’re learning from Karen Danudjaja, the founder of Blume.

Blume is what happens when you pair the benefits of the wellness aisle and the experience of a cafe. They’ve bootstrapped the company to 10M in sales making your favorite cafe lattes with the magic of superfoods from Vancouver Canada.

We’re talking through that first year of business and how she approached getting her first 1000 customers, bootstrapping the brand until now, and her learnings from her first raise of $2m.

Something pivotal during that raising period is that Karen realized that she was someone who wanted to do everything. Save every single penny. So sales and customer service herself. In fact, every role possible herself. It's crazy what automation on just a few of those things came to do for the scale of the business. For example, when the first hire in customer service joined the team it made such a huge difference to be able to delve into strategy, sales, and development. You can never do everything, but if you surround yourself with people who want to help you succeed you're onto a real winner.

The founder also delved into a couple of tips regarding their influencer marketing strategy. They found this unique audience that supported women and small businesses and wanted to be part of something from the beginning. This meant their ambassador community runs more of the business than meets the eye, they’re super involved. With this, you're able to expand by working directly with people that align with your brand mission.

And whilst we're here, just a quick shout out to all the amazing humans listening into these episodes. I’ve been so happy and grateful recently about what we’ve been able to achieve together, all because you are tuning into these episodes and supporting the show. We’ve got a few exciting things in the works that I can’t wait to share with you soon.

Let’s get into this episode, this is Karen for Female Startup Club.

This is Pascale Heylar-Moray for Female Startup Club

Hello everyone and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here - your host and hype girl.

Today on the show we’re chatting with Pascale from Grow My Money (previously known as Super Rewards). Did you know that in Australia 1 in 3 single women retire in poverty, and 1 in 6 women overall retire into poverty. That’s a very scary and very real stat. Now there’s multiple factors that play into that statistic but one of them has to do with our superannuation. If you’re listening in from outside of Australia - superannuation is kind of like a 401k in America, or your state pension in the UK. Over the course of your career, your employee puts money into something you can’t touch until you retire - and that money significantly grows over the course of 30+ years so that when you retire, you have a chunk of cash to live off. Simply put. And men retire with almost double the superannuation kitty than women do. And with that in mind Pascale wanted to do something about it. This is a real eye opener and I would love to know what you think about it - come and chat with us in the Facebook group.

This is Hannah Drury for Female Startup Club.

Welcome back to the show - if you’re new here! Hi! I’m Doone, your host and hype girl in business. Every week we learn from 7,8 & 9-figure female founders to understand their blueprint in business when it comes to money, marketing, and mistakes. Women like Hannah Drury the founder of Peppermint Grove Australia and Moss St Fragrances. Hannah started this business in 2014 with an investment of $50,000 and now she’s selling more than 100,000 products every month. Today we’re digging into Hannah’s story of building this brand over the last 10 years; what she did when her 100% retail model in business went to zero overnight when the pandemic hit and how she diversified her business by becoming her own manufacturer and perfumer.

Hannah also dives into her wholesale strategy in the early days and how she managed to secure her brand in 110 retail stores within the first 6 months of starting her business - as a one-woman show! I love her approach to pounding the pavement and owning her backyard which saw the brand incrementally grow across retail stores at an incredible rate. And the best bit? It was totally free!

And while I’ve got you here; you might have noticed that I’ve been talking more and more about our newsletter. And that’s because we’ve been crafting it to be an absolute go-to resource that delivers you weekly insights, resources, and extra content to keep you in the loop on all things women in business. This is Jennifer Neville for Female Startup Club

Welcome back to the show! If you’re new here... Hi! I’m Doone, your host and hype girl in business. Every week we learn from 7, 8 and 9 figure female founders to understand their blueprint in business when it comes to money, marketing and mistakes. Women like Jennifer Neville the founder of Live Zen With Jen.

Jen is a former professional golfer turned celebrity astrologer and YouTube psychic. Yep, you heard that right! Jen has found her path helping people find their passion and purpose in life through astrology and spirituality. A true thought leader in the space she mixes a bit of the practical with the magical in order to help people reach their maximum potential. This one is a little different from our usual episodes, but I think you'll absolutely love diving into the how and why of how Jennifer built this business and created her dream life.

In this episode, we're talking through her transition from professional sports to entrepreneurship, we dive into the nitty-gritty of what it means to create a successful YouTube channel these days, and what the business model looks like when you're following a path like this one. We also completed a tarot reading on me, your host and hype girl, as Jen lays my soul bare for everyone to see. This was a first for me so I’m bare with me on it.

Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thanks for tuning in to my solo episode this week. I’m recording this from my little hotel room in sunny New York city and I’m feeling so grateful to be in this beautiful city. Today, I want to dive into a topic that I know is going to be relevant for every single one of you listening in. And that’s the topic of female health. Women have been underserved by the healthcare industry for a really damn long time. But now finally, with more women in STEM, and more female entrepreneurial disrupters, the future of femtech is looking bright.

Firstly, we learn from Dr. Amy Divaraniya, the founder of Oova, an incredibly innovative women’s health company. Amy has more than 10 years of experience as a data scientist and has both led and published original research in the areas of personal genomics and biomarker discovery.

Next, I introduce Nadya Okamoto from August. Or you might know her better as the “period girl”. August is the lifestyle period brand that makes sustainable period care that actually works. And Nadya is one of those women that is impossible not to be impressed by and excited about. She’s a Harvard grad, author, speaker, NGO founder, gen z marketing agency founder and now august as well as a TikToker that’s grown to 2.4 million followers.

Thirdly, I dive into the story of Bethany Edwards and her creation Lia, the world’s first flushable pregnancy test. Lia is an earth-friendly healthcare company on a mission to revolutionize reproductive health through the development of innovative products. The company's first product, which came to market just last year, is the FDA cleared Lia pregnancy test.

Next I’m introducing you to Alexandra Fine, a real favourite from the show, and one of the women behind Dame. Dame is leading a sexual wellness revolution as a women-powered resource for game-changing products for pleasure and supportive content.

Our fifth story is that of Krystal Duhaney the Founder of Milky Mama. After having her second child and returning to work, Krystal struggled with her milk supply and realized that there were very few resources for breastfeeding mothers in the same predicament. So, in November of 2015, Milky Mama was born. Today, Milky Mama is dedicated to educating, supporting and empowering parents to have the best breastfeeding journey possible.

I next introduce you to another woman modernizing sustainable period care, Cherie Hoeger with Saalt. In 2018, Saalt launched its flagship product—the Saalt period cup—with the vision of making cleaner, more sustainable period care accessible to everyone.

Last but not least, I want to shine a light on Sally Mueller and her company Womaness. Womaness is a collection of modern, innovative menopause products developed for women, by women that offer solutions from head to toe, and everything in between.

These are all stories that have really stuck with me in the last year, an incredible little bank of inspiration, and if I can pass that feeling onto even just one of you today that’s a mission very much accomplished. Let’s get straight to it! This is me, for Female Startup Club.

I’m so proud to be bringing you this episode. It’s with a friend of mine, who you probably have seen on the likes of Instagram doing her super cool things. Lil is Australia’s favorite woman. Truly. How Lil Ahenkan (aka Flex Mami) built her empire, Flex Factory, through deep conversations talking about sex, life, and everything in between.

It’s a big call, I know, but she’s definitely one of mine and I know a lotta folks who agree with me. My bet is she’s about to be one of yours. She’s a dj, podcaster, best-selling author, diy guru, hilarious Instagrammer as well as an entrepreneur. And a damn good one, at that. So in this episode let us take you behind the scenes into her story, but first - and if you haven’t been blessed with her content on Instagram - just pop on over. Have a quick peek. Have a lol. Do some critical thinking and then come on back to listen to how she’s built her colourful world and business, Flex Factory.

For Lil it's nice to be working on the business every day, chipping away at it, working intentionally, because it does make the biggest difference. I love Lil's approach to the financial part of the puzzle. She's always - are the numbers reflecting our efforts? Are the numbers reflecting our decisions? If not, they're not doing it properly. Initially, she thought this was a really stringent and restrictive way to run the business. How can you be your full creative self if you have to think about numbers? But now, she loves seeing really clear boundaries and restrictions. Within that perimeter, you can make the best creative decisions. Knowing what you have, what you don’t have, what you need, what you don’t need.

Let's get straight into it.

Today on the show we’re learning from the co-founder of London based jewellery brand Kimai.

Kimai is a modern fine jewelry brand that delivers true traceability by using lab-grown diamonds and recycled 18k gold. By using lab-grown diamonds – which are physically and chemically identical to those that are mined – and recycled gold, they cut out all mines and middlemen and control the whole jewelry process, from design to delivery. They operate on a mission to prove that diamond mines are not forever, and that the biggest luxury is knowing where your jewellery comes from, and safe in the knowledge that it doesn't harm people or the planet.

In this episode, we chat through the serendipitous moment that generated $150,000 worth of sales, her approach to fundraising and how they built a new brand in the midst of a pandemic.

It's a good little reminder that if you thought cold emailing was outdated, it might be time to change your mind. Jessica talks us through a mind-blowing story that reminded me just how important it is to try your luck. No matter how big the goal. Jessica is a strong believer in cold emails. She cold emails everyone. Even investors. Looking online, figuring emails, guessing emails, or finding them.

The Kimai founders were on the hunt for the perfect match for their brand and landed on Meghan Markle. She was the dream. But how do you reach royalty? Looking into her close network to figure out how can we get in touch with her and how can we tell her our story. Through a few cold emails, they got her to wear their products a few months after launch. Their strategy was all around looking at her close friends that might be more accessible than she is. With the help of LinkedIn, Facebook, and guessing emails, the girls gave themselves the chance at a stage on which to tell their story. Why they’re doing what they’re doing. And Meghan loved it. They ended up selling to Meghan through cold emailing a friend, and the rest is history. In the 2-3 weeks after she wore the earrings, they made $150,000 without any marketing. They then took advantage of that situation to go and fundraise with the advice: take advantage of the situation because you never know what happens afterward. A $1.2M seed funding round later, this is clearly a fairytale ending.

Now, let's get straight into it.

Today on the show we’re learning from Lizanne Falsetto, the founder of thinkThin® and betterland foodsTM.

Lizanne began her entrepreneurial journey at her kitchen table, inspired both by a family recipe and a strong desire to solve a personal problem. On that table, the original thinkThin® bar was created: a revolutionary product that would become one of the most sought-after health foods on the market.

Her original instinct for a clear market opportunity in health food evolved into a 20-year tenure as founder and CEO of one of the fastest-growing health food brands in history and was eventually acquired for $217 m in 2015.

In 2020, as the pandemic disrupted life the world over, she was intrigued by the influx of food scientists creating cleaner, alternative proteins without the direct use of animals. These discoveries rekindled her entrepreneurial verve and led her to establish betterland foodsTM, a new venture committed to creating crave-able, delicious foods that are better for people – and better for the planet.

There are so many learnings and lessons woven into this episode and I’m just so excited to be able to share this inspiring conversation with you. We chat about the early days of building the brand when Lizanne was still modeling and would bring her home-creations to shoots to get feedback. How this natural desire led her to walk straight into the path of entrepreneurship, and how she learned what she was doing along the way. Setting up "Harvard for a day" chats with consultants, and just getting her product into as many hands as possible.

How important it is to keep your messaging consistent. Especially when you have limited ways to get your voice out there, to stay consistent with your messaging. And my favorite tip of all, how important it is to have your own personal financial situation in check when you get into building a business and possibly raising capital. It's so important to understand this, in order to understand the ramifications down the line. We round off by chatting about her incredible exit selling thinkThin® for $217 million. And how important it is to be ready spiritually, mentally, and emotionally before selling your business. Now, let's get straight into it.

If you love it as much as I did and you learn something, please do share it on Instagram tagging us or by leaving a review to help other ears find us.
