[party in my plants] 88: Eat Plants. Take Epic Dumps. Hear this Digestible Conversation about Gut Health! with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz
05/10/18 • 103 min
My guest today is one of a kind. He’s also just, kind. Dr. Will Bulsiewicz is a speaker, blogger, father, husband, microbiome specialist and a full time practicing Gastroenterologist. Now admittedly, I haven’t had the best experiences with gastro’s - I saw a couple many years ago in the heyday of my digestive struggles and they were not personable, not helpful and nowhere close to being on the “food-affects-your-gut-health” train. So aside from Dr. B’s hilarity, well-spoken-ness and palpable through the phone sincerity for educating and helping heal guts, the fact that he’s as passionate about plants as any person I’ve ever encountered -- which goes back to what I said earlier about him being one of a kind. Aside from being seen in scrubs and colonoscopies at and The Lowcountry Gastroenterology Practice in South Carolina, he’s been featured in Men’s Health, Huff Post, Women’s Health, & Reader’s Digest and hear me when I say his instagram account: @theguthealthmd is a hoot and a half plus an extra half of having helpful information!
Press play to hear:
- Why doctors aren't being taught about food, nutrition, and diet.
- All about the microbiome, baby!!
- The very bad effects of losing gut diversity.
- How stress messes with your digestion. (My favorite topic.)
- The magic of fiber and how it's like a super hero.
- How sad the Standard American Diet really is...
- The #1 one thing we can add to our diets to improve our gut health!
- Advice for raising kids to have healthy tummies.
- A garden analogy to explain probiotics and prebiotics.
- And SO. MUCH. must-hear. MORE. !!

[party in my plants] 87: You Don’t Need Willpower, You Need Food Therapy! with Shira Lenchewski
My guest today believes that our relationship with food? It’s a relationship. Like a relationship we have with other humans. And just like we can talk to a therapist to help us fix our relationships issues with other humans, we can talk to a food therapist to help us fix our relationships issues with food. Shira Lenchewski is that food therapist! Shira’s an LA-based registered dietitian whose nutritional insights and recipes are faves among wellness-focused celebs and non-celeb awesome wellness-focused regular people too! What I love about Shira is that that she’s as real as they come - and she eyerolls alongside me when she hears the term mindful eating as well as shares the same tagline “being healthy eating doesn’t have to suck!” She recently came out with a book call The Food Therapist that’s jam-packed with refreshingly practical advice for helping peeps resolve their “it’s complicated” relationship with food! Alright, let’s do some food therapy, baby!
You’ll hear:
- Why not eating mindfully doesn't mean you lack willpower or you're lazy.
- How we've been conditioned to eat ice cream when we're sad.
- What you can learn from how a three-year-old eats a cupcake!
- The role of the pre-frontal cortex (yay science!).
- Where sugar does AND doesn't need to be.
- Reconciling wanting to look good vs. wanting a donut!
- Why ethical accounting doesn't have a place in your relationship with food!
- The importance of owning your decisions and indulging CONSCIOUSLY!
- And A LOT more!

[party in my plants] 89: What Wine Pairs Best with Salad with Bianca Bosker
My guest today used to just be a regular person. Or a civilian, as she calls it. Not too long ago Bianca Bosker was just a regular boxed wine drinker, not giving any thought or sniffs to wine that she’d sip, until one day she discovered something that forever changed the way she viewed fermented grapes: she stumbled upon the secret world of sommeliers and became, well, obsessed. I’m not going to spoil the rest of the story - I’ll let Bianca tell you her tale, but if you’ve been curious about how to feel more comfortable ordering or buying wine, which wines pair perfectly with planty dishes and whether wine really has any redeeming health qualities, I think that Bianca, the New York Times bestselling author of CORK DORK is the perfect person to satiate your thirst for vino knowledge! Get buzzed to hear: - The two senses we've forgotten about and how to develop them! - The poetry (and bullshit) of tasting notes. - A peek into the secret world of sommeliers (it includes dance classes, obvs). - The difference between natural, organic, and biodynamic wine. - Does wine have any redeeming health qualities? - Why you shouldn’t feel bad buying wine based on a cute label! - Bianca’s go-to wines for plant-y dishes. - How to send a wine back the PC way. - And lots more!
