Existennial

The story of today’s guest is a long and winding and one that involves crime, international borders and an eff ton of breakfast. Ksenia Avdulova is the breakfast eater behind the @breakfastcriminals an award-nominated wellness brand that meticulously manages to merge food with mindfulness. (And dangerously leads to acai and smoothie bowls cravings on the regular.) What started as a whatevs, yolo instagram account devoted to sharing healthy brekkies has since transformed into much more than talking about the mornin’ meal, Ksenia’s now really the leader of a self love and self realization movement who believes that How you start your day is really - how you live your life. (Which explains why she loves to start hers in her signature heart-shaped bowl.) I only thought it was apropos for me to much on my breakfast protein waffles while interviewing Ksenia so if you think you’re hearing chews, you’re not imagining it! It’s me!

Get stoked to hear:

- A twisty-turny immigration story (that totally has to do with breakfast)

- How (and why) Ksenia started making her own acai bowls

- What started Ksenia's self-care journey (featuring a rock icon lookalike)

- Why the most important thing is to enjoy your food and eat mindfully

- How to practice your intuition and decide if you need chocolate or a hug

- What to ask yourself when you're standing in front of all the ice cream

- The traditional way to eat acai bowls (it's not what you see on Instagram)

- Why more superfoods isn't so super

- What sparked Ksenia's passion for authenticity and conscious consumerism on social media

- The reality TV show Ksenia once applied for (!)

- What you should do if you're not into eating in the A.M.

- And lots more!

[party in my plants] 105: Pretty Simple Cooking with a Pretty Cute Couple ‘o Cooks! with Sonja and Alex Overhiser

In exactly 1 month from when this episode airs, I’ll be waking up as a married lady for the first morning ever! So I figured right now’s the perfect time to share my chat with a couple who is couple goals to the MAX. Sonja and Alex Overhiser, known on the interwebs as A Couple Cooks, are a writer and photographer duo behind the award-nominated food blog, A Couple Cooks, and the co-authors of the inspiring (to me as a soon to be also author) cookbook, Pretty Simple Cooking, which was named one of the “best vegetarian cookbooks” by Epicurious. And which lives on the SPECIAL FAVORITE COOKBOOKS section of my cookbook library, I’d like to add. Their plant-forward approach to eating and their joy-filled approach to cooking, mixed with their humble approach to love is what makes this couple pretty simply awesome. It was tricky tricky business scheduling this interview with BOTH Sonja and Alex but I just couldn’t settle one half of the couple cooks and I’m so thrilled I get to share both of them with you today! I’m also thrilled I got to pick their brain about kitchen tools to register for before it was too late. Mmhm, listen up!

Get excited to hear:

- What inspired A Couple Cooks to actually cook and the first meal they EVER made

- The journey from never cooking to running a successful food blog and writing a cook book

- How to embrace failure in the kitchen and life lessons learned from cooking

- The trick to making food and cooking part of your life without missing out on life

- The appetizers they always put out when people come over

- How their day-job skills translated to the kitchen

- How they learned to share their passion and work together peacefully

- How to not want to use your knives on your loved ones when cooking together

- Whether Alex or Sonja is the better baker and what they make everyday

- What they eat when they don't want to deal with the process of making French toast

- What to do if meal prep is totally not your thing

- How not to be afraid of going to the grocery store

- The simple thing that will make you love your veggies, even Brussels sprouts

- What they wish they would have registered for to stock their kitchen as newlyweds

- The importance of not rushing through cooking and eating

- What they think they're bad at making

- And lots more!

[party in my plants] 107: How to Have a Healthier Relationship with Healthier Makeup, with Sarah Rose, Natural Makeup Artist

My guest today only uses nontoxic attitudes and nontoxic products! And obviously believes in the power of eating non-toxic plant foods. Sarah Rose is a New York City-based Makeup Artist who, after working in the conventional make up industry, became appalled AF at how much pressure the media and beauty industry puts on women to meet the social construct of beauty. She experienced first hand how this drove women's insecurity levels way down and their crappy product purchases way up--and who's to benefit? Certainly not these women--instead, the pockets of these big conglomerate corporations who own most of the industry and even the petrochemical industry! It's one big vicious cycle. So in 2014, Sarah Rose was inspired to shift focus in her practice and she switched over to the good side - completely non-toxic, clean products, all made by smaller, passionate makers while deconstructing one's relationship with beauty. As a self-proclaimed Makeup Therapist, it's her goal to empower her clients to find confidence even barefaced! Without makeup! And by using plant-based skincare mixed with a plant-based diet, Sarah Rose works to empower women through revealing their inner + outer beauty.

Oh! And Sarah Rose also does wedding day make up! She’s doing my wedding makeup in 2 weeks which I couldn’t be more excited for because her M.O. is helping brides naturally shine like their best selves on their wedding day, not look like the most makeup-ed self on their wedding day. Just for funsies I took some photos from our clean wedding make up trial and put them in the show notes alongside photos I took from my shall I say bluntly, TOXIC wedding make up trial photos if you want to take a peeksies at the obvious difference in favor of clean beauty and being a natural bride, you can do so at partyinmyplants.com/107.

  • What the clean beauty industry needs to do better
  • What stress is REALLY doing to your skin

  • Finally figuring out the difference between BB cream, CC cream, and tinted moisturizers

  • Why clean beauty products look more natural than conventional beauty products
  • Wedding Day Makeup 101 – prep,
