Meet the Herd: Conversations with Carly Kade

In this episode, Lisa and Julianne introduce listeners to filmmaker and author Victoria Racimo, equine advocate Jeanne Mirabito and author Susan Abel. The interviews were recorded during the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest at the Kentucky Horse Park in December.
Victoria Racimo is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, producer and actress. She wrote, directed and produced the documentary, "One Day", for which she won Best Director in the Equus Film Festival. She wrote two animation specials: "A Toucan Can" starring Jason Alexander and "Pirate Jack" starring Alice Cooper. She was Exec. Producer on the HBO film, "Casi Casi". Victoria was commissioned by the State of Virginia to write and direct the original drama "Journey of Destiny." She also co-wrote "All the King's Horses: The Equestrian Life of Elvis Presley." Victoria is an avid supporter of equine welfare.
Our Mims, the equine subject of "One Day," was the 1977 Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. Running in the Calumet colors of devil’s red and blue, she won 5 of 18 races. In 1990, Our Mims was sold as part of Calumet’s dispersal sale. Then in 1997 Jeanne Mirabito found a pensioned Our Mims on a local farm. With the help of a local rescue, Mims came to live with Jeanne Mirabito... and a lifelong friendship developed. Our Mims died of colic complications at the age of 29 in December of 2003 and was buried in Calumet’s equine cemetery. In memory of the great mare and her dear friend, Jeanne Mirabito created Our Mims Retirement Haven so other mares will be cared for once their broodmare careers are over. The Haven became a 501(c)3 on March 8, 2007 (Our Mims’ birthday). Since then, a number of famous and not-so-famous mares have found their way to the Haven.

Author Susan Abel has had a passion for writing, second only to her passion for horses, since she was a child growing up in the Detroit area. With writing assignments becoming her favorite projects in school, she completed her first novel at the age of seventeen, a story about a girl and a horse, of course.
Following a twenty-plus-year career as a professional trainer and riding instructor in the mid-West, Rockies and Southeast, Susan returned to school to earn a degree in journalism. Following graduation, she worked several years as a beat reporter and feature writer for various newspapers as well as for a private university group. Once her girls were grown, she returned to her passions: instructing with her own riding school again while writing “Through the Mist.”
Susan currently lives in the metro Atlanta area on a small farm with her husband of ten years and a menagerie of animals. She loves to read, draw, ride and show her horses, travel on adventures with her husband and go on long hikes with their dogs.
