The Art of Photography - How to copy the COLOR GRADE of ANY Image
play

05/14/19 • -1 min

Learn how to match the color grade from any image to one of your own! Check out my Preset Pack for Adobe Lightroom/Adobe ACR http://theartofphotography.tv/presets The heart of color grading comes down to understanding how light and color work in the highlight, midtone and shadow areas of a photograph. In this video I'll use Adobe Photoshop to illustrate the concept and how it works. Of course this same idea can be applied to any software application that you are using for photography (Lightroom, Luminare, DX0, Capture One etc). • Understand how to sample colors and see toning in both shadow and highlight detail • find the midtones • match a color grade using a color balance adjustment layer • match a color grade using a curves adjustment layer Check out my other videos: Lightroom Presets :: Get Incredible Looking Images https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO6s6oRPR1A The Film Look With Levels Adjustments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQiqOinqHV4 The One Secred Lightroom Feature Every Photographer Should Be Using https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7HBdMrR6Zo Canon EOS RP :: Why? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg4C7Uipt9I Why You Should Be Using Lightroom Mobile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNoNlJKcSNU Music is from Epidemic Sound https://goo.gl/v5wWKr AoP T-Shirts https://aop.threadless.com/ Need a website? http://squarespace.com/aop On my channel you will find videos about photography, cinematography, post processing tutorials for Capture One, Lightroom and Photoshop, photo assignments that YOU can participate in, the Artist Series and more. Dogfish Head is an amazing brewery in Deleware - they've released a Gose called Super Eight. Currently collaborating on a film with Kodak, they claim this beer can be the perfect catalist for developing film. I decided to put it to the test. Can you actually develop film using beer? Develop responsibly. The Art of Photography - DJI Osmo Action VS GoPro Hero7 Black
play

05/30/19 • -1 min

DJI recently released its "GoPro killer" - the DJI Osmo Action. I've been using this camera for about a week now - so how does it stack up to the GoPro Hero7 Black? Both do 4k video and 12 megapixel stills. Both have incredible image stabilization (with a slight edge to the Osmo). But what about timelapse, hyperlaps and the other features action cameras are now expected to have? We'll take a look in this video. The Art of Photography - Minimalist COLOR in your photographs
play

06/12/18 • -1 min

Lets talk again about photographing with intent. In this video I want to talk about what happens in front of your lens and how you can get really effective results by limiting your color palette. Steve McCurry's Afghan girl is an incredible example of this. Its not only a famous photograph but it has become iconic over the years. Everything in this composition supports the eyes including color. McCurry took this image on with a Nikon FM2, 105mm f/2.5 lens and used Kodachrome 64. While many contest that this is a definitive Kodachrome image, I actually argue that its the selection of colors that was important and keeping them reduced to essentially 3 - red, green and the skin-tone. The Art of Photography - Medium Format Lenses and the Hasselblad X1D
play

01/24/18 • -1 min

The Hasselblad X1D is an interesting camera for Medium Format because of its size. The X1D is much smaller than the studio types of models most digital medium format cameras come in. So with a camera that's designed for portability, lenses are a concern because of the sensor size. How do you design a lens that is as compact and portable as the camera itself? Hasselblad currently offer 4 lenses - a 30mm f/3.5, 45mm f/3.5, 90mm f/3.2 and a 120mm macro. I had the opportunity to work with three of these lenses on the Hasselblad X1D over the last month and I'm excited to share the results with you. One image, 2 editors… why are the resulting images different? I've compared the calibration algorithms in Adobe Lightroom and Capture One and the results are extremely interesting. To understand the resulting photos, you have to understand a few things about RAW format and how it is interpreted. Adobe Lightroom has been the market leading software for image editing for what seems like forever. But we are entering a time where we actually have choices and depending on your priorities as a photographer you can choose what image editor works best for the photography you make. The Art of Photography - Print Talk :: photography in Platinum Palladium
play

12/14/17 • -1 min

Having spent a week in Arizona at Hidden Light, I've made many photography videos behind the scenes at their amazing photo lab. Matt Beaty is not only an interesting photographer, but he is one of the best platinum palladium printers working today. Platinum palladium is a beautiful alternative process that's made a resurgence in recent years. Warm tones and sharp details are two of the main characteristics. I sat down with Matt to talk about his approach and what he does. Want a print made? Check out Hidden Light http://hiddenlightllc.com/aop Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
