Dumpsterpiece Theatre

Now THIS is a true Dumpsterpiece... We started watching the Ferris Bueller television spin-off from 1990 and boy is it awful. Seriously, you need to see how bad this is. The premise being that the movie was actually a take on this Ferris' life, even though the movie Ferris was "too whitebread." So what else can we do but chainsaw a cardboard cutout of Matthew Broderick as Ferris in half? Set in Santa Monica (wut?), just listen to that sweet, terrible synth R&B/funk intro that sounds like the preprogrammed demo track on every Casio from the early 90s - it really sets the tone for the whole show. You'll get Jennifer Aniston as Jeannie, something she probably doesn't acknowledge. You'll get Ami Dolenz (Mickey Dolenz's daughter) as a Saved-by-the-Bell-esque California beach-babe Sloane - what a wench! Apparently she can't run in the sand, though. Richard Riehle as Ed Rooney, possibly the only casting decision that makes sense (UP YOURS!) You'll also get to see Ferris hit on his mother in very obvious ways, and Ferris' dad with no pants on. Special guest appearance by Billy Idol, who ends up running for student body president - Les is More!

We're about to spoil the crap out of this, so we're including a link to the YouTube playlist for the first (and only) season of the show - all 13 episodes: Ferris Bueller

So get ready for your tennis instructor to "serve a full set," fire up your computer to hack your sister's bail charges, and remember - "life is one damn thing after another."

022 - After (Film)

We've done the first book, now we're doing the first movie in the After series by the same name - After. The film tracks the book pretty well, but it jut kind of falls flat without the nuance of the story. We get a little (almost none) of the back-and-forth power dynamic between Tessa and Hardin, primarily because Hardin is a little milquetoast, but at least he's got some nonsensical tattoos and a Ramones t-shirt that he shares with Tessa. Selma Blair plays Tessa's mom, but we don't hate her as much as we did in the book (also Scott is a bit of a fan of hers.) "Toby Tucker" Noah still gets left in Tessa's dorm room while she's off canoodling with Hardin, but at least he doesn't go to a hotel instead. Steph's portrayal is decent, and apparently her partner Tristan is a girl in the film, but at least you don't need a fake ID when you're with your "spirit guide." Molly has long hair and Hardin's English dad has spent so much time in the States that he now has an American accent.

So grab a bottle of Gilbey's and let's head on over to our "special spot" by the lake (river?), take a quick dip underwater to enjoy the silence, and proceed to sleepwalk through a long-winded ethereal dream-state where there's literally nothing beneath the surface of our story. We're recapping this whole thing and comparing it to the book, so it's a two-for-one spoiler extravaganza.

024 - The Cutting Edge - with special guest Caroline!

If you grew up in the 90s and enjoyed ice skating, the Olympics, or romcoms, you're sure to have heard the phrase "toe pick" taken from one of the greatest films of ALL TIME - The Cutting Edge! On this episode, we revisited the fun classic with special guest Caroline (Liz's sister-in-law!) Given that she's a super-fan and hasn't watched the movie for a few years, we included some trivia for her. So come hear how she did.

We fully acknowledge that this film is far from a Dumpsterpiece but we decided to do it anyway, because that's how we roll. For the uninitiated, this film is about a temperamental figure skater (Kate) and a brash former hockey god (Doug) that get thrown together to compete in Olympic-level pairs figure skating, and the inevitable tension that leads them to overcome the odds and brings them closer together. There's so much to enjoy here: lots of montages of the working-out, skating, and party variety; hands soaked in battery acid; skaters getting stuck on lederhosen; and ... fingerpainting? Doug can read and he desperately needs a sandwich, but he just doesn't downshift that fast. The most important question, though is - how many shots did Kate take - 3 or 4?

So put on your $69.95 tuxedo, polish your knife collection, practice your sit-spin and join us for this masterpiece - just don't hide your light under a basket. And remember - we're recapping this whole thing in detail, so if you don't want it to be spoiled, go give it a watch and then come back here for the breakdown.
