EP 543. Making Decoys with "Never Settle" Determination
Duck Season Somewhere
12/30/24 • 104 min
With legions of die-hard customers, Dave Smith Decoys have long been regarded as the most realistic and utterly effective decoys available. But who is the man behind these legendary craft decoys, and what does his functional art say about him as a hunter and a human being? You'd have to figure him a serious goose hunter if nothing else. Legendary decoy maker Dave Smith describes growing up hunting and trapping in Oregon, artistic influences, starting a decoy company, and more. We get deep into the many various goose species hunted in Oregon, why regular ol' honker decoys aren't effective in luring various species, hunting techniques, leg bands and neck collars, new DSD duck decoys, turkey decoys, what makes his DSD best, and continually striving to be better. Really good stuff.

EP 563. Dead Hens Don't Lay Eggs and Other Topics
Duck Season Somewhere
03/10/25 • 87 min
In case you haven't noticed, North American duck populations--duck harvests--have declined from the highs of the late-90s. Dead hens don't lay eggs, for sure, but is the fix that simple? What are the root causes for these declines in waterfowl populations? How bad is it, why might it get way worse before it gets better, and what can we duck hunters really do about it? Scott Stephens, DU's Senior Director of Prairie and Boreal Forest Conservation, joins me to discuss.

EP 564. Looking Back
Duck Season Somewhere
03/13/25 • 96 min
What began as buck-fever-of-epic-proportions first deer hunt with a neighboring mentor began a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing worldwide for Alabama native and storyteller Clint Ward. From an elk hunt that culminated in a marriage proposal to nearly dying atop a British Columbia mountain, Ward shares colorful stories about how hunting experiences shaped his life and taught him what's most important in life.

Duck Season Somewhere
04/21/25 • 102 min
Get the grease HOT! We're walking through waist-deep river water in waders today, boys and girls, but the air is heavy with pollen, the weather's beautiful, spawning slabs are transitioning to shallow water--and the bite is underway! Near a fabled Mississippi lake that consistently produces some the largest slab crappie in America, I join John "Little Riddle" Blake, Jimmy "The Mayor" Dean, and John Harrison for stories and insights collectively representing well more than a century fishing these legendary waters. Ain't kidding about hot grease, either--we eating good tonight!

*SPECIAL* Flying Blind: Waterfowl Science & Management At Risk
Duck Season Somewhere
04/22/25 • 109 min
Today's special topic cuts deeper than science or partisan politics---it defends North American duck hunting's essential back bone, wetland health and abundance, continued public land access, and our legacy to future duck hunting generations. Right now, powerful forces are dismantling the foundations of North America's greatest success story--waterfowl hunting as you've known it your entire life. Most have scarcely even noticed. Decades of data and research, the programs and staff that keep ducks overhead and seasons open--all are all on the chopping block. If you've ever watched sunrise from the duck blind, heard thundering wings overhead, or taught your children the meaning of this cherished tradition--this fight belongs to you. Me. All waterfowlers. Silence is complicity. Read the links below. And act now. This is your chance to make a real difference. If not you, who?

EP 487. Long Point Ontario Diver Hunting
Duck Season Somewhere
07/01/24 • 97 min
Mallards may be the so-called rockstars of the duck hunting universe, but not if you were born and raised on Long Point, Ontario, where massive diver rafts on Lake Erie form ravenous swarms that strafe your ice-encased layout rigs when the weather's just right. And especially not if you're a third-generation diver hunter and boat builder like Jayden Bankes, who excitedly describes bluebills, redheads, and king cans starved for lush wild celery beds so thick they bog outboards! Jayden takes us deep into his north-of-the-border duck hunting world, telling fascinating stories about the men, the ducks, the traditions and the legendary boats that forever shaped his big water world view. We should all be so lucky!

EP 544. A Classical Decoy Carving Family Tradition in Virginia
Duck Season Somewhere
01/02/25 • 77 min
Following a duck hunt along Virginia's Eastern Shore, Ramsey meets with father-son carvers, Ian and Mark McNair, who are committed to crafting wooden waterfowl decoys using only traditional hand tools and methods. More than simply turning out beautiful decoys, their decoy carving story is about a classical approach to duck hunting as well as to life.

EP 536. Powered by Inukshuk--And Here's Why
Duck Season Somewhere
12/11/24 • 50 min
Our beloved retrievers are our ride-and-die best friends, but they're also high-performing athletes with singular life missions to recover downed birds regardless of weather conditions. They deserve the very best nutrition. With an if-you-know-you-know, almost cult-like following among serious US retriever circles, Inukshuk Professional Dog Food is sold directly to consumers and has no ambitions of being widely distributed in big-box retailers. Raised into the business, company president Emily Corey describes Inukshuk Professional Dog Food's humble origins, explaining how and for what purposes their highly digestible, calorie-dense formulas are derived, why Inukshuk is the highest quality dog food available, how their direct-to-consumer model ensures superior freshness, and why a "corporate culture" that keeps them in close, personal contact with customers is win-win-win.

EP 482. The Shotgun Conservationist
Duck Season Somewhere
06/13/24 • 97 min
"How do I pay Mother Nature to make wild animals instead?" asks Brant McDuff from Brooklyn, New York, who grew up shooting shotguns, didn't start hunting until recently, and is fervently spreading hunting gospel via speaking engagements, hunter's ed courses and a fresh-off-the-press book. Yeah yeah, hunting is conservation. But coming from outside the cradle-to-grave hunting community, Brant brings fresh viewpoints to include venison diplomacy, preservation versus conservation, natural fiber versus synthetics, meat versus something else, virtue signaling versus land ethic, wildlife disturbances and rewilding nature from mountain cyclist/backpacker (I may have used the catchall word "granola") as compared to hunters, social media representations, stigmatized words like trophy and hunting, and more. Ninety-six percent of Americans do not hunt. What now?

EP 481. Speaking Truth To Power: Bio-political Mississippi Wildlife Management
Duck Season Somewhere
06/10/24 • 74 min
Ricky Mathews is a fearless force of nature when it comes to doing right by Mississippi's treasured wildlife resources and the people, like himself, that enjoy hunting and fishing. Using what he calls "reporting muscle" to "speak truth to the power," his hugely popular SuperTalk Outdoors radio program oftentimes crashes meteorically through controversial topics, like the ones he describes candidly today. For most of us, hunting and fishing is part of our cultural identity. It's who we are. We need to ask ourselves--we must insist in knowing--how much of our wildlife management policy is science-based versus politically motivated? And how might those political influences be purposefully self serving? Implications can be long lasting, far reaching, and detrimental to the greater good--whether in Mississippi or your own home state.
