Drew and Sam are actors. They haven’t won any Academy Awards yet, and neither of them is in line to be the new James Bond (sorry Sam), but between them they do have over half a century’s worth of experience in the industry. Many months ago a combination of boredom, significantly reduced work opportunities (thanks pandemic!) and overactive and under-stimulated imaginations inspired them to create a podcast, and somehow they’re still at it. Join the Drewling Samantics chaps every Sunday (or download and listen later) as they give an entertaining insight into how their industry works - from modelling to voiceover, theatre to film, and television to streamed media, the gents talk about all areas of performance artistry, giving an insider view that is sometimes humorous, often eye-opening or poignant, and at times just downright strange! With regular guest appearances and the odd special ‘on location’ segment, Drewling Samantics brings something unique and fresh to the world of podcasts from two normal blokes, working in a rather abnormal industry.

Riding High

Season Four has barely begun and already Drew and Sam are welcoming their first guest! Yes, today the chaps are joined by the fabulous Jamie Riding - a young actor with a great future and a fresh presence in the industry. As a performer Jamie has his eyes fondly on the past, and specialises in the traditions of two not totally unrelated theatrical disciplines.

When he’s not delighting audiences as a pantomime dame, Jamie is normally found capturing and captivating new young audiences as Punch and Judy puppeteer “Professor JR”. He tells the chaps about honing his skills with advice and support from some big names in the business, and how he strongly believes you should never pass up an opportunity! Following an illustrious line of performers before him, he loves that he is part of a time-honoured institution, but also leading a new vanguard of actors and creatives who are keeping these traditions alive and breathing new life into them.

Delighting in his work and with an infectious joy, Jamie is an actor, storyteller and performer with so much to give and share, so sit back and enjoy his visit to Drewling Samantics!

Hocus Pocus, Blokes in Focus
Another eventful week has passed for the gents of Drewling Samantics, with both Drew and Sam having spent time out and about. The shorter half of our dynamic duo attended a premiere of his latest film at a rather grand and secretive location - and that’s secretive in more ways than one; while the lankier member of the team spent a very creative weekend at a photographic workshop run by previous podcast visitor. All this may seem quite cryptic, but never fear as the truth will be exposed (and don’t worry, that’s all the exposure there will be, that reference is in no way connected to the aforementioned photo-shoot!)
Reporting back on their outings, whilst being fun, proves to also be quite thought provoking, and in turn initiates some in depth discussion regarding dealing with rejection and the consequential lower points in their careers – something that is sadly rather familiar to almost all actors and creatives. The mood isn’t all doom and gloom though, and of course the serious chat is brightened by the usual silliness, some obligatory mickey-taking, and even a podcasting staple masquerading as a dessert! Well if that doesn’t make you intrigued enough to tune in, then quite simply nothing will!

Stairway to Heaven

The best theatrical productions are often inspired by real life occurrences, and this week’s guests Anthony Merryweather and Emma Woodhouse have an incredible true tale to tell in their brand new musical, ‘The Truth Stops Here’. The tragic story certainly isn’t common knowledge, but along with the third member of the production team Nick Paterson, Anthony and Emma have created a brilliant and powerful show to make this little-known yet shocking event considerably more main-stream.

Drewling Samantics regulars may recall Sam being in the cast for the development workshop and subsequent concert performances of ‘The Truth Stops Here’ back in the summer, and he is returning to the cast as the musical moves on to a fully staged version, but before that happens he and Drew have the honour of chatting to its creators and finding out the origins of the piece, how those involved in the real disaster have been memorialised, and much more besides. Today’s show also has some exclusive recordings from the workshop, and gives subscribers a chance to win tickets to a performance of the show in January, so tune in or you might miss out!

Drewling Samantics - S09E09 - The One That Got Away
play

The One That Got Away
There has been quite a lot going on in the industry recently for Drew and Sam to cast their eyes over and pick apart. In this episode alone they discuss budget cuts, well timed but potentially inappropriate protests, useful and exciting investments, and a very British response to an abnormal occurrence. Quite the collection!
Then, having dealt with the news and other developments, the Drewling Samantics chaps turn their attention to those unfortunate, but not uncommon, occasions when actors have to deal with the rejection and disappointment of missing out on a job. No matter how much caution and common sense a performer uses when auditioning, sometimes it is difficult not to get ahead of one’s self and start “spending the wages” in advance, or to begin to enjoy the role before actually officially landing it. Both Drew and Sam have experienced this and share their personal recollections, as well as referencing one or two outside of their own careers. And, they tend to be far rarer situations, but there are even times when a job has to be turned down, which you’d think it would be easy but, as one of the boys explains, it can be quite the opposite! Join them now to find out more.

Drewling Samantics - S11E08 - Drums, Drama and Drizzle
play

Drums, Drama and Drizzle
No disguises or imposters this week on Drewling Samantics, just another visiting talent and friend to share experiences and stories with our happy hosts!
The chaps are delighted to welcome Andrew Lindfield this week, who shares his journey through the business with them, spreading knowledge and joy on the way. Despite early musical success drumming in a band, he was never truly content sitting at the back, and previous love for amateur dramatics inspired him to make a change, so he took himself off to drama school to learn his trade – resulting in flourishing as an actor and now producer. But training didn’t come without its challenges - there was a rather unexpected obstacle to overcome as is revealed when Andie tells perhaps one of the most shocking and dramatic guest stories ever!
Drew and Sam are great advocates of creating your own work, and Andie has certainly done that! Making the leap and forming DOT Productions with his wife Louisa, they now tour Nationally each summer performing classic plays for adults and children alike, with this season’s shows featuring a rather familiar face..! And as the performances are mostly open air, let’s hope the good old British weather is kind to them!
Andie is great fun, informative, entertaining and knowledgeable, and you’ll certainly want to hear that amazing story towards the end, so what are you waiting for?!

Doing The Write Thing
Drew and Sam are back for their tenth episode of the current Drewling Samantics season despite both having very busy schedules, and we can be especially thankful as today confirms that they’re never too busy to treat us to another great guest. They may both be thinking “there just aren’t enough hours in the day”, but that could well be because this week’s guest has used them all up!
Nicholas Benjamin is a self-confessed workaholic, and a look at his theatre, film and writing credits proves just how accurate that is, and equally just how unstoppable he is. As he explains, it’s no use telling him he can’t or shouldn’t do something – that to him is merely a challenge to be conquered! He’s also very self-aware and incredibly honest, and as a result not afraid to own his mistakes (of which there are very few) and acknowledge his successes (of which there are far more). So join Drew and Sam as they enjoy a spirited and open chat with Nick that will interest creatives and audience members alike, and also features a mythical beast and a rather entertaining slip of the tongue...

Season Five – Best of Drew & Sam
So now they’ve finally reached the last episode of Season Five, it’s time for Drew and Sam to bow out with a compilation of their favourite moments and stories from the last fifteen weeks.
This season has seen them out and about and on the road, visiting new places and old haunts, recording in studios, on sofas, and of course in Sam’s flat too, and all these venues have allowed them to bring another fabulous collection of DrewlingSamantics episodes to listeners - both regular and new. With shows and screenings, location reports, and the usual chats and stories (not forgetting the friendly banter which is always thrown in for good measure!) it has been a varied and fun season for this podcasting pair.
And now it’s over to us, to experience a selection of the bits Drew and Sam particularly enjoyed and wanted to share again. If there’re any moment that you specifically loved that haven’t been included then do feel free to get in contact with the boys, as well as sending in the usual suggestions and comments which are always welcomed and valued. But if not there’s only one thing to do; and that’s to sit back and wait, as, with exciting changes and new features, Season Six is on its way so Drew and Sam will be inviting us all to more DrewlingSamantics very soon.

Behind the Lens
It’s guest time for the first time this season, and the Drewling Samantics boys are delighted to be joined this week by the brilliant Gary-Anthony Rogers.
We’ve all heard the phrase “the power behind the throne”, well Gary takes that in a slightly different direction by being the power behind the camera. As a talented and dedicated Director of Photography (DOP), he is always in great demand, so Drew and Sam consider themselves extremely fortunate that he’s able to take time out from his immensely busy schedule to discuss his career, how he started in the industry, and to throw some more light on the numerous projects he’s juggling at present. Gary is also able to explain how he fits into the team surrounding the director and the camera itself, to bring the script and visuals to life in the best way possible. And if you’ve ever watched the credits roll at the end of a film and wondered what those obscure and unusual job titles actually mean, Gary even decodes some of that technical jargon for us as well!
Calm, clever and insightful, Gary is fascinating and witty regarding his work, always unflappable on set, and just the man for those tricky shoots. Well, almost always, you see there was that time... nope – not spoiling it! The only way to reveal more is to tune in now!

Target Audience
It’s the last Drew and Sam episode of Season 11, and in this season finale they are singing the praises of their audience members - or at least appreciating the variety and quirks that different groups of patrons can bring.
Love them or hate them (with the latter only occurring on very rare occasions of course!) there would be no point to a performance of any kind without an audience... or would there?! In fact could there actually be a performance with no audience at all?! Hold that thought, as there’s a whole episode worth of discussion there in itself! But intrinsic thoughts and strange considerations aside, both of the Drewling Samantics chaps have experienced the warmth, joy and excitement from various audiences over their careers. That said, “there’s nowt so strange as folk”, and spectators can be highly unpredictable, and are always liable to respond differently depending on venue or location!
So join the fun now for a last entertaining chat before Drew and Sam are off on their theatre adventures for the summer, they will return very soon with stories, discussions and guests aplenty for Season 12 - but not before the always enjoyable “Best Of” episodes, don’t miss them!

In the Fast La(i)ne
Today the Drewling Samantics chaps are joined but someone so fresh faced and youthful that it’s enough to make them both feel old! Yes this show sees the lads welcome their most recent guest, the bright and brilliant talent that is musical theatre performer Leo Abad.
Having not long graduated from Laine Theatre Arts stage school, Leo was straight off on a national tour, taking on (among other roles) the part of the White Rabbit in the wonderful Shrek The Musical! This is certainly not his first professional credit though, as he appeared in panto with one half of the Drewling Samantics team, and, as professional debuts go, it was definitely an eventful experience as Leo explains (no, not just because he had to share the stage with Sam!) Leo is on the road with Shrek for a few more weeks before that magical adventure comes to its end, however this talented young man won’t have an opportunity to stop, as he jumps immediately into his first West End contract! But of course, which show is it that Leo is joining you ask? Well you’ll have to tune in to find out more as it’s not as simple a Leo doing a big reveal... or is it?!
Another fabulous guest makes for another fabulous episode; Leo is a true delight, full of energy, enthusiasm and ambition, and has a smile that lights up every room. The Drewling Samantics boys are honoured to welcome him for this fantastic interview and they’re sure you’ll find him as entertaining as they did.
