Business owner, C7 quadriplegic, author and one heck of an inspiration - Darren Longbottom (Owner of Zink Surf) chats with Dane Sharp about life and leadership in a wheelchair | Dream Job Ready EP45

Ready to be inspired, shocked, moved and motivated in one short interview?

Darren 'Daz' Longbottom was born into the surfing industry. Growing up on the beach in Cronulla, Australia, he and his brother witnessed surf industry and business success first hand via their father, who was a surfboard manufacturing pioneer in the 70s and 80s. Coming of working age, it didn’t take Daz long to forge his own identity in the surf industry and business world, eventually becoming the owner of a surf shop in Kiama on NSW's south coast.

The business was successful and enabled Daz to live a happy, easy-going and casual life, but all that was rocked in a split second by a freak surfing accident in the remote region of Mentawais, North Sumatra.

The freak surfing accident broke Darren's neck and resulted in instant paralysis. Alone in the water and semi-unconscious, Daz fought to stay alive until he was rescued by his friends, returned to the boat and stabilized (by getting strapped to a surfboard). But that’s just the beginning... What follows is a 25+ hour ordeal (I stress the world ordeal) returning to the mainland and reaching the safety of a hospital... You're likely trying to guess or imagine what went wrong and what happened... Think worse and times it by x 2...

Today, Daz still runs his successful surf store in Kiama, but now does it from a wheelchair because of his C7 quadriplegia and spinal cord injury. His co-authored book Beyond the Break explains his unbelievable, life-or-death escape to safety in impeccable detail and reading the book inspired me to interview Darren for Dream Job Ready. For it's not simply the inspiration, motivation or advice on mindset he shares, but the importance, reliance, and motivation he put on work, his job, and on his company, even in the hardest times of his recovery.

Dane visited Darren at his home on the South Coast of NSW for the interview (Covid-19 safe) and we had a small sound issue with my microphone. No biggie, you'll make out and understand everything I say, but I'm just calling out that the audio is not as crystal as it normally is or as Darren's microphone audio is, which is perfect.

Dream Job Ready with Dane Sharp and Jason Olive (Marketing Director, Movember) | Dream Job Ready EP43.

2020 has been one for the history books, but it's been a pivotal and important year for non-profit organisation and charity, Movember.

Our mental health has been pressure-tested even more than usual, with Covid-19 disrupting and impacting life as we know it.

Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale, focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Across the world, men are dying six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. Movember's mission (by 2030) is to see the number of men dying prematurely reduce by 25%. Lofty goal, but so critical.

Since the first moustaches were grown in 2003, Movember has raised over AUD $1 billion for men’s health, funding more than 1,250 innovative programs ranging from groundbreaking clinical tests and trials to game-changing mental health studies and programs.

Jason Olive is Movember's Marketing Director and has a dream job with the organisation. After building a healthy career working in advertising agencies, he jumped to the non-profit in July 2019 and hasn't looked back. Awarded CMO 50's 'One to Watch' in 2020, Jason is proud of the work his team and the organisation at large has done this year, but knows its the diverse community of supporters that need the praise.

If your dream job is working for a charity, this episode is a must listen. Jason shares great advice about how to find the right organisation and cause for you and gives a rundown of what responsibilities his role has. I also asked Jason about the impacts that Coronavirus has had to mental health this year and what trends Movember has seen. We discuss the impacts (positive and negative) of working from home, the readjustments we'll need to make again in the new year and about work-place mental health in general.

If you're going through a tough time or know someone who is, remember you're not alone and there is help available.

Keep a lookout for your friends, family and co-workers. If it’s your mate, dad, brother, partner who is struggling, these conversations can be tough. To build your confidence, check out Movember Conversations, a free online ‘conversation simulation’ tool created by Movember and guided by an international team of mental health experts https://conversations.movember.com/.

For instant assistance, you can call Lifeline 24 hours a day and have a chat with someone. The phone number is 13 11 14.

If you're not in Australia, please lookup a similar organisation in your area.

If you want to support Movember, and help them change the face of men’s health you can do so year-round at: https://au.movember.com/donate.

Grant Sherson's road to a dream job was not linear and it wasn't without its challenges and u-turns... This episode is a must-listen for anyone who can say similar.

A graduate of University of Wollongong (Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies), Grant's resume includes roles in media, marketing, night club management and in sales and partnerships.

We discuss Grant's career path in the episode by unpacking the best learnings, advice and recommendations he has for job seekers and graduates.

Today, he's in a happy place. His current job is a cracker. Commission Factory is an exciting, young company that's carving a real place in affiliate marketing, and Grant's time there has influenced a stack of fruitful new partnerships and client relationships.

Ahron Young is an award winning journalist and news anchor, who has worked in television, newspapers, radio and web news across the world.

He knew at an early age that he wanted to work in media. As a young teenager he was excited by TV news and journalism, and looking back now can see that he can see that he always had a entrepreneurial spirit too.

After a few bouts of media work experience while he was still at school, Ahron went on to cut his teeth in radio, spending 2 years with Melbourne’s leading news talkback station, 3AW, where he reported on state politics, Melbourne’s famed Underworld and global stories such as the death of Pope John Paul (the second) and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Always ready for his next opportunity, Ahron then spent a year living in Moscow reporting and broadcasting news for Russia Today.

In this interview, we talk a lot about being opportunistic and staying agile in your career, and Ahron shares great advice for would-be journalists, about change, adaption and mobility in the media industry.

Returning from Russia to Australia 2006, he landed a dream job with Australian news channel SKY NEWS. He’d spend 12 years with the network, as Melbourne Bureau Chief and lead News Anchor - covering major events in Victoria, Australia and around the world.

Ahron needed a change in 2019 and come August, Ticker was born...

We discuss the company and its mission at length, including how he plans to staff the business as it grows, the news content that’s in demand, and how up-coming journalists and reporters can connect with him about future opportunities with the business. Ahron explains how he wants Ticker to be the "Netflix of News".

He is making a point of fostering a great company culture at Ticker, where everyone’s opinions are heard, so this business is one to watch in 2020 and beyond.

There’s a lot of honesty and sincere advice in this interview, and Ahron’s career has been built on dream job ready moments. Awesome career stories, job tips and career development advice if you're looking to work in media.

Dream Job Ready Episode 14: Lori Holloway (Recruitment & Talent Acquisition, Cisco)

Lori Holloway is a Customer Experience Talent Acquisition Partner at Cisco, responsible for recruiting and onboarding talent into the IT giant’s Enterprise Networking, Data Center, Storage, and Service Provider departments. She’s regularly vetting, interviewing and helping hire for roles such as Network and Software Engineers.

Lori goes into some amazing and helpful detail about the job application and recruitment processes in this episode, sharing advice about how companies like Cisco approach the process and what you, a willing applicant, should do to best present yourself as an ideal candidate for the role.

This episode delivers the wisdom, insights and advice Dream Job Ready strives to learn. Real, honest, practical and useful information and guidance to help you get ready for your dream job opportunity.

We talk about resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, job descriptions, application screening, interviewing, the importance of communication, hard and soft skills, and plenty more.

This episode’s “Question of the Week” is from a student named Rosie, who asks Lori “Do I need to include a Cover Letter with my application?”

On top of the job seeker to-do’s, Lori shares plenty about her day-to-day, working with Cisco’s hiring managers to identify staffing needs, sourcing and searching for talent to fit open roles, reviewing candidate information, and examining culture fit early in the screening process.

We also talk about the volunteer work she’s been doing to help professionals that have lost their jobs due to Covid-19. I’ve been really impressed with Cisco’s “Give Back to Get Back on Track” initiative and was glad to hear it’s been well-received across the world.

Dream Job Ready Episode 06: Benjamen McGrath (Job Seeker, ex Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox)

I worked with Ben at Rip Curl around 10 years ago and he’s also had dream jobs with Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox and in the advertising agency scene.

Benny is currently unemployed and job seeking though, after recently being made redundant due to a company takeover, so I interviewed him to find out just how someone prepares and deals with that setback when they’re chasing a dream job.

The timing of this interview couldn’t have been more coincidently relevant. The COVID-19 crisis has rocked small and large business, and has led to millions of lost jobs all over the world.

This interview took place in February, so we weren’t aware of Coronavirus at that point and hence we don’t discuss it in the interview. We do however talk plenty about dealing with job loss, managing redundancy, recruiters and staying ready for the next opportunity that presents itself.
