Dr. Kate's Functional Medicine Podcast
06/24/22 • 8 min
Approximately 60 to 70 percent of people with thyroid dysfunction don’t know they have it. How can this happen, you ask? Well, part of the problem has to do with how and when we test the thyroid, part of it has to do with a lack of awareness about the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction, and a BIG part of the problem is the similarity of symptoms related to both thyroid and stress.

The 3 "F's" of Balanced Blood Sugar
Dr. Kate's Functional Medicine Podcast
06/24/22 • 5 min
One of the easiest, most effective ways to manage chronic stress is by balancing your blood sugar. Having "rollercoaster blood sugar levels" that spike and crash over the course of the day (and night) is a huge physical stress trigger, exponentially increasing the output of cortisol, your body's long-term stress hormone. AND, wonky blood sugar levels lead to other problematic symptoms and disease processes like insomnia, chronic inflammation, type 2 Diabetes, and weight gain. And by weight gain, I mean an increase in body fat - which is a stressor in itself!

Dr. Kate's Functional Medicine Podcast
09/09/22 • 5 min
Sometimes “normal” tests are a relief - but other times they’re the most frustrating thing ever. Because if standard lab testing comes back within normal limits, it doesn’t give us much to work with. It can put the brakes on further help from more conventional providers. And it can even lead to minimization or dismissal of problematic, chronic symptoms.
That’s why Dr. Kate loves utilizing Integrative & Functional Lab Testing. There’s always a nugget of actionable data that we can build on when we get the big picture! In this episode, Dr. Kate digs in to the differences between Conventional and Functional lab testing - and explains how it helps folks like you!

Is the “Cortisol Steal” Real? - How Stress Messes Up Your Hormones
Dr. Kate's Functional Medicine Podcast
06/24/22 • 4 min
The number one cause of hormone imbalance is STRESS. Not age, not genetics, not a bad roll of the dice. Stress - mental, emotional, and physical - can dramatically shift your hormone levels independent of all those other factors. And when I say “hormone levels,” I mean all of them. Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone are only the tip of the iceberg, though they are definitely at the mercy of stress and can create quite the mess if not balanced.

Why You’re Terrible at Relaxing - and how Functional Medicine can help
Dr. Kate's Functional Medicine Podcast
11/11/22 • 7 min
Feeling like you can’t relax - even when you have the time and space to do so? The truth is, we’ve sort of normalized this feeling - this constant state of being “on.” To our over-stimulated brains, it becomes an addiction, a dopamine-seeking behavior like multi-tasking. We’ve gotten so used to being in a constant state of alertness that it becomes our baseline, but it’s far from the physiologic, rest-and-digest, tend-and-befriend baseline that our bodies need to stay healthy and our minds need to stay well. And it’s bothersome - the sleepless nights, anxiety, work-obsession, and time wasted on activities that isolate us from others keep us from living our most full & fulfilled lives.
Tune in to learn how a Functional Medicine approach to stress can help you shut off your overthinking brain without resorting to denial or dissociation.
