Divorce is not fun. There is nothing earth-shattering about that statement. Divorce not only can be devastating to your emotions, but it can be a bombshell to your personal finance. Does it always have to be this way?

In this episode, we’re interviewing Dr. X on how she was able to have a cheap and amicable divorce for only $1000. That’s right, I said it - a divorce during the COVID pandemic for only $1000.

I love Dr. X episodes because you get raw, unfiltered discussions about how folks feel about certain topics.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Inventory the reasons you are fearful or hesitant to divorce
  • Consult with a reputable family law attorney
  • Inventory what money can’t buy and use this in negotiations

Now that Renee and I are 10 years deep graduating from residency, we feel there’s a lot of life experience that we can share. When looking back, the three themes of the show (money, mindset, and mission) have shown up in various life experiences.

In this episode, we’ll be introducing a new series called “11 money traps that burn-out doctors can overcome.” In some form, Renee and I have experienced these money traps and have found solutions to gain back control. The expectation is that you can learn from our experiences “growing up” and “adulting” while becoming doctors. We’re talking WITH you and not AT you and looking forward to you joining us on this journey.

Should you buy a house or rent? It seems like a hard decision to make. Not to me. Here’s my simple advice:

RENT!

Well, at least during the first couple of years of moving to a new town or starting a new residency.

Karl Brisard, a real estate agent with Keller Willams (and Renee’s cuzzo), is on the hot seat to talk about how to buy a house when you’re new to a city.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

-How to choose which neighborhood to look

-How to tell if you should get a single family home or mult-family

-The questions you should be asking your realtor

-Different types of mortgages (i.e. FHA vs Doctor’s Loans)

Dr. Nii talks about the most important lesson he learned in 2021. He will be using this to change the trajectory of his life & business in 2022. Take a listen to see if this will help you also.

Key Quote of Atomic Habits:

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Your goal is your desired outcome. Your system is the collection of daily habits that will get you there... This year, spend less time focusing on outcomes and more time focusing on the habits that precede the results.”

What’s good everyone!

We’ve all learned that there’s plenty of ways to skin a cat. In the world of personal finance, we don’t get the opportunity to hear opinions from various backgrounds. It’s smart to have an emergency fund, and set a plan for debt payoff. On today’s episode, we’re going to debate should you pay off your debt as quickly as you can? Also, are leases really that bad? Drs. David Rhoiney and Leif Dahleen from SurgiFI & Physician on Fire respectively, jump on this podcast!

What’s good everyone!

Dr. Sylvie Stacy, author of 50 Nonclinical Careers for Physicians, jumps on the hot seat to talk about choosing not to practice clinically. Yes, I said it! There are a bunch of medical students, residents, and doctors who deep down know that clinical medicine ain’t for them. Who do they talk to? Where can they find out next what to do?

Dr. Sylvie Stacy is a preventive medicine specialist living and practice in Birmingham, Alabama. She received her MD from UMass Medical School and completed her residency and earned an MPH at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Sylvie went through something similar, but decided to help others by creating a website that inventoried jobs looking for physicians. She didn’t stop there and wrote this great book. Full Disclosure: I endorsed this book!

What’s good everyone!!

We’re going to continue the voter registration conversation because it’s very important. Today you’ll be hearing from Dr. Alister Martin, an ER physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, who started the organization VotER. VotER believes that more voices build better systems and they are accomplishing this by making it easier for medical professionals and their patients to register to vote.

You’ll also hear about what it’s like to build an organization like this from the ground up.

Other things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • How patients can change the dynamics of healthcare
  • How Dr. Alister has been able to get such a large patient and hospital buy-in
  • The importance of civic engagement
  • How he built the intricate network/infrastructure of VotER
  • How VotER has been able to “gamify” voter registration with medical professionals.
