Over the past two decades, AGAG has brought together funders, civil society leaders, scholars, and practitioners to learn from each other and build an informed, engaged, and connected network. Through this audio newsletter, we share information about their work.
In this episode, we highlight our recent website blog on Philanthropy and Higher Education in Africa that includes reports on philanthropy support for higher education in Africa and organizations working to strengthen the higher education sectors in countries across Africa.
We discuss the different ways foundations are supporting higher education from funding universities to supporting networks to providing research fellowships. An Interview clip provides insights into the findings of a recent report on funding for higher education and how those findings connect to the findings of the Africa Grantmakers' Affinity Group 2015 report on US Foundation Funding for Africa. We discuss African national, regional, and continental organizations working on higher education issues. We conclude with a spotlight on programs that are supporting the next generation of academics and hear an interview clip about a foundation's support for young African scholars is supporting African knowledge creation.

Philanthropy and Higher Education in Africa has links to reports about the different approaches by American foundations to funding higher education in Africa, including supporting and engaging young African scholars. Also included are research and data resources from African organizations working at the national, regional, and continent-wide levels on different aspects to improve the higher education delivery system in countries across Africa.
US Foundation Funding for Africa examines changes in American foundation funding over the decade from 2002- 2012 and gives a detailed snapshot of funding in 2012. It compares differences in funding for organizations headquartered in Africa and funding for activities focused on Africa implemented by organizations headquartered outside of Africa.

We discuss what funders shared at the beginning of the pandemic during the “Discussion Series: Navigating the Impact of COVID-19" about taking a more flexible approach to reporting requirements and how funds were used. An excerpt from our “Conversations With” series episode about philanthropy’s response in South Africa that questions if South African funders will continue to be flexible. We conclude with highlights from the report, “Conversations With Africa Grantmakers: Reflections on Navigating Roles and Relationships” that interviewed grantmakers about their career paths, lessons learned, and how they manage the different roles and relationships that are part of the grantmaking process.
