That '90s Show
CROpod: The Other Rangers Podcast
08/03/22 • 87 min
We've joked about it before but it does appear Rangers are deadset on introducing a whole new generation to what the mid-90s felt like. Thankfully, Shane, David and Todd have all already lived it and know how to prepare. Plus, comedians who aren't funny; David thinks he is funny; nutjobs take a loss in Kansas; and more!
Read a special thank you note to our listeners and supporters from Shane.

Rangers From Sea to Shining Sea: Portland Timbers 1976
CROpod: The Other Rangers Podcast
08/24/22 • 42 min
Rangers returned to North America in 1976 for the first time in more than two decades, embarking on a five-stop tour beginning in the Pacific Northwest. As the USA geared up for its bicentennial and Gerald Ford was on the campaign trail in Portland, Oregon, Rangers rode into town (literally on the day) to take on the Timbers on 23 May.
In the third episode of the Rangers From Sea to Shining Sea series, Shane Nicholson is joined by longtime friend of the CROpod Gary Havlin and brand new friend Don Cox to talk about the third matchday of the 1976 tour. How did Bruce Rioch's little brother almost not survive?; Was it really Jock Wallace that played peacemaker?; and Does Providence Park still have a feral cat colony? All that and more in this special episode!

Watergate at 50: A Simple Country Lawyer
CROpod: The Other Rangers Podcast
07/07/22 • 91 min
Shane and David are back in the fourth episode of their Watergate at 50 series for a look at the Greatest Show on Earth: the 1973 Senate Watergate Committee Hearings.
Meet the Simple Country Lawyer chosen to head the Senate's inquiry into the Nixon White House, an incredible jurist and orator (and a staunch segregationist) whose daily hearings ended up in the homes of nearly 85% of Americans during the spring and summer of 1973. Plus, John Dean goes on the attack after accepting he was to be the scapegoat; Republicans plot against him with the help of Nixon's team; but a Bob Haldeman aide reveals what Dean had by then believed for months: that he was being secretly taped in the White House.

The Dinosaurs and The Black Belt — CROpod Explains America
CROpod: The Other Rangers Podcast
09/15/22 • 36 min
Ever think a 100 million-year-old coastline couldn't have an impact on global politics? Man, are you wrong! And Shane and Colin are back to explain why in this edition of CROpod Explains America.
Find out how an inland sea during dinosaur times shapes American and, quite frankly, all of western politics. What the hell does an ancient seabed have to do with modern politics? Is John Roberts actually a lizard person from the late Cretaceous? How racist do you have to be to hate the area where a beach was millions and millions of years ago? All this and more in this episode!
Watch the Field of Vision 2016 documentary here.
And here are a bunch of maps that show you how all this stuff lays out.

Watergate at 50: Cox, Lies and Audiotape
CROpod: The Other Rangers Podcast
07/20/22 • 94 min
Shane and David are back for the fifth installment of the Watergate at 50 series, as the wheels begin to come off the presidency of Richard Nixon while a bowtie-cladded Harvard lawyer drills closer to the Oval Office before being spectacularly dispatched.
This week, we meet the Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, a man Nixon couldn't have conjured up in his worst nightmares to steer the investigation into his administration's dirty tricks. Plus, the tapes take center stage and we have a bunch of them for you; Nixon fights the courts every step of the way to protect those recordings; and ultimately hatches the Saturday Night Massacre, setting the stage for the final act of his time in office.

Watergate at 50: A Third-Rate Burglary
CROpod: The Other Rangers Podcast
07/01/22 • 100 min
After two weeks and nearly three hours of their Watergate at 50 series, Shane and David finally get to the genesis of it all: the June 17, 1972 break-in at the Watergate complex.
The guys walk you through how all those names and faces laid out in Episode 2 came into play in what became the greatest political scandal ever. Plus, the extra-legal measures taken by the White House in the days after the break-in as a cover-up is quickly put into action; everything works great and Nixon is re-elected in a landslide; but then everything comes apart when one guy sends a letter to a judge.

Shane & Todd's Desert Island: Pretty Much Just Some Random Films
CROpod: The Other Rangers Podcast
07/19/22 • 59 min
David is at the football but Shane and Todd have agreed to return to their Desert Island after a long time away. In what could only be described as "an episode of a podcast," the guys play a little game Todd found on the internet, picking their top films from the years 1979, 1989, 1999, 2009 and 2019. It will come as a shock to no regular listener that it gets more difficult as the years move along.

Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
We started during the dark days of Rangers in 2012 and it was actually, well, mostly about Rangers then. The show ran for around 100 episodes, most of them absolute marathon recording sessions that I parred down to around 90 minutes. There were a couple of comebacks between 2014 and 2020, when the show was brought back with a wider scope that we've carried on into new series and specials, all while continuing to focus on the greatest football club in the world.
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
Depends on the episode. Obviously an understanding of Scottish football through the shows that actually concentrate on that, but we also do a number of shows on the wider culture and history because we're entertained with that sort of stuff and enjoy discussing it.
Which episode should someone start with?
Just fire in wherever. The weekly show touches on a little of everything; the specials are typically labeled accordingly.
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
They're all fun to record and a hassle to produce. The Watergate series was a fun trip; you can find all those episodes here except for the seventh installment which dealt more specifically with the media's role. Spotify pulled that whenever they brought out their new rights agreement in late 2022, but it's still available on the Buy Me A Coffee page (it's listed in the show notes of every episode).
Which episode are you most proud of?
Sometimes we do shows about some serious stuff, which is a bit of a change. Our friend Michael McGuire joined me for a short chat about his charity supporting bereaved parents in 2021 — https://t.ly/lHJQw — and I hosted a dialogue with Gordon Watson about racism in football — https://t.ly/dxoiv — which both dealt with very serious issues, while still in a way befitting the CROpod.
What is your vision for your show?
Well the original idea behind the pod and its accompanying website was Rangers news without access, favour or discretion, obvious a rip off of original Deadspin. Now? We try to have fun, we try to inform, we try to give people a break for 20 or 90 minutes or whatever.
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
Don't know that I have a favourite but I listen to 5-4, SYSK, Lions Led By Donkeys, The Rest Is History and about a dozen others on the regular.
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
CRO was the acronym of The Copland Road Organization, the name of the Rangers news and views website that preceded the podcast. I gotta give credit to my original co-host Andy McGowan for pinning the name during an episode we were having fun with acronyms. It stuck.
Tell us a bit about yourself
Former journalist. Former bar owner. Former house-band guitarist. Community activist although in a more background role these days. I love Rangers, love the Mariners, love my Tennessee Volunteers, read endlessly, and talk a lot of BS on Ex Twitter dot com. Live in my adopted hometown of Rockford, Illinois and try to make sure people know it's not that bad here. I have five fish.
