The Piscataqua Maritime Commission (PMC), a 501(c)(3) organization, organizes Sail Portsmouth, a tall ship visit held each summer on the waterfront of our picturesque city. Beautiful rigged ships - square-riggers, brigantines, barques, schooners - sail into Portsmouth harbor.
What else does the PMC do for our maritime region? With the help of our generous sponsors, we arrange for the annual Sea Challenge, sending local teens on a life changing Ocean Classroom adventure. Also, throughout the year,we host Maritime Talks with speakers and slideshows addressing our maritime connection.
Would you like to be a sponsor for the Sea Challenge or for Sail Portsmouth? Are you the captain of a tall ship who would like to bring your vessel to Sail Portsmouth? Would you like to be one of our wonderful 150 volunteers for Sail Portsmouth? Let us know here or through our website.

Beer Styles # 35 - Bock

Bock
(Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)
Bock is a bottom fermenting lager that generally takes extra months of lagering (cold storage) to smooth out such a strong brew. Bock beer in general is stronger than your typical lager, more of a robust malt character with a dark amber to brown hue. Hop bitterness can be assertive enough to balance, though must not get in the way of the malt flavor, most are only lightly hopped.
2 Subcategories:
A.Subcategory: Traditional German-Style Bock
-Color – Dark brown to very dark
-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Traditional Bocks are made with all malt, and have high malt character with aromas of toasted or nutty malt, but not caramel. Traditional bocks display high malt sweetness. The malt flavor profile should display a balance of sweetness and toasted or nutty malt, but not caramel.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low
-Perceived Bitterness: Medium
-Body: Medium to Full
-ABV: 6.3%-7.6%
B.Subcategory: German-Style Heller Bock/Maibock
-Color – Pale to light amber. The German word “helle” means light-colored, thus Heller Bock is a pale beer.
-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Light toasty and/or bready aroma and flavor is often evident. Roast or heavy toast/caramel malt aromas and flavors should not be present.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Low to medium-low, derived from noble-type hops.
-Perceived Bitterness: Low to Medium-Low
-Body: Medium to Full
-ABV: 6.3%-8.1%
-Glassware: Tulip Glass - A stemmed glass, obviously tulip-shaped, wherein the top of the glass pushes out a bit to form a lip in order to capture the head and the body is bulbous.

Episode # 53 - Harpoon Brewery - Chief Brewing Officer, Al Marzi

Michael speaks with Al Marzi, Chief Brewing Officer of Harpoon Brewery about his journey from hauling kegs to becoming Head Brewer to his Executive status and managing brands.
It all started with three college buddies and a shared love of beer. Dan Kenary, Rich Doyle, and George Ligeti were passionate about beer, but they weren’t able find what they were looking for on tap at their local pubs. While traveling in Europe after college, they drank many diverse, fresh, local beers and experienced firsthand the wonderful beer culture that existed just across the pond.
They wanted to bring that to Boston, so they decided to do just that. In 1986 the Harpoon Brewery received Brewing Permit #001 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
And that, friends, was the beginning of Harpoon....
We had the building, brewing equipment, and a bunch of people who loved to drink beer....now we just needed someone to come and actually brew the beer. Enter Russ Heissner, a graduate of the UC Davis School of Fermentation Sciences. Russ started formulating the recipe for Harpoon Ale in the summer of 1986. Friends and family were the lucky (and, at times, unlucky) quality control team through many months of test batches. Finally, in June of 1987 the “original” Harpoon Ale was brewed and delivered to Harpoon’s first accounts; the Sevens Ale House on Charles Street and Doyle’s Café in Jamaica Plain. And the rest, as they say, is history.
