Thank you so much everyone! I hope this podcast has been useful, helpful, informative. One hundred episodes! This one is perhaps a little self-indulgent, but Lauren Ziaks and I talk to my three friends (make that two) who were on the bike ride with me on August 1, 2003 when I sustained my brain injury! Alain, Dawn and John were riding with me that day thankfully. They saved my life. The paramedics saved my life. The ER and ICU doctors at Victoria General Hospital saved my life. This episode is for everyone who listens, and is dedicated to more people than I can name who have helped me get here. Not just to 100 episodes, but to everything. Thank you! Please consider supporting Concussion Talk Podcast on Patreon!

My guest for Episode 48 is Joseph LeDoux, PhD, Professor of Neural Science, Psychology, Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at New York University; Director Emotional Brain Institutel. His awards and accolades are too many to note here, but suffice to say, he is accomplished. Joe has written several books, including The Emotional Brain and Anxious. His latest (2019) book is called The Deep History of Ourselves: The Four-Billion-Year Story of How We Got Conscious Brains. While he notes that brain injury is not his area of expertise, Joseph LeDoux has done extensive research on the brain, notably how emotions effect the brain and what emotions may be. Check out the Joe Rogan Experience, Episode #1344 to hear more. Joe is also a musician in the band, The Amygdaloids, duo in So We Are, as well as solo projects.

The important differences between men and women are apparent in other aspects of life and health, yet they have been conspicuously absent as part of concussion and brain injury research! Although very important, the differences remain under-appreciated!Episode 53 of Concussion Talk Podcast/episode 13 of Phoenix Concussion Recovery Podcast will hopefully morph into a series all its own, discussing concussions with a focus on how women and men are affected differently from what is ostensibly the same traumatic brain injury. This is the first “panel” discussion, with Lauren Ziaks, PT, DPT, ATC of Phoenix Concussion Recovery & Podcast, Meaghan Adams, PT, PhD of the original “Concussion in Women and Girls” episode, and Concussion Talk Podcast/Phoenix Concussion Recovery Podcast veteran, Katie Mitchell, PhD(c), MScPT, CAT(C). I hope it gets people talking, and I hope it encourages a frank and honest discussion about how brain injuries, including concussions, affect everybody differently!

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

I wanted to spread more awareness of brain injury and I I had been listening to podcasts for years and I knew they were really good at sharing information. Podcasting seemed like a good way to reach more people and for me to meet people in the brain injury field, whether they be researchers, medical professionals (doctors, physios, ATs, other therapists), community organizers, athletes and others!

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

More awareness around brain injury. The brain is essential to everything we do, from opening our eyes in the morning to closing them at night. People know this, but the idea of it ever being injured doesn't seem to occur to many. I hope by listening to the podcast they will understand of common it is and how much it affects everyday living.

Which episode should someone start with?

Any. The affects of concussion and brain injury are unique to every individual, so there will be interest in many different areas! That being said, many important areas are under-studied and need more awareness brought to them. Maybe it's recency bias, but episodes 150 talks about concussions in kids and episode 151 talks about traumatic brain injury resulting from intimate partner violence. I think these are two important issues.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

I named my blog Concussion Talk. I wrote on that for five years before the podcast. I guess it was lack of imagination combined with serendipity .

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am from St. John's, NL, Canada. I did an undergrad in Biology at Queen's University, Canada and after graduating I cycled across Canada with 2 friends. I had played water polo since I was 13, but tried triathlon when I started my MPA at UVic, BC, Canada in Jan 2003. After accepting a work term in Ottawa, I was on a bike ride, crashed into a tree, in a 2-week coma, and sustained a severe brain injury. I worked for 4 1/2 years in Ottawa (EDC) and St. John's, then started blogging and podcasting.
