The best podcasts about Concussion & Brain Injury

Who am I?

I was severely brain injured in 2003 when I was cycling, flew off my bike into a tree, shattered my helmet (Which did its job. It saved my life) and in a two-week coma. Although my situation has improved immensely since then, I started my blog Concussion Talk in 2010 and my podcast, Concussion Talk Podcast in 2015. I was born and grew up in St. John's, NL, Canada. I went to Queen's University in Kingston, ON and after graduating with a Biology degree in 2002, two friends and I cycled across Canada - I do roughly 60 very short podcasts in which I read my daily journal from the trip. I then started a Master's of Public Administration (hopeful that would give me a way into international affairs) at the University of Victoria in Victoria, BC and joined the triathlon club. Although my brain injury was severe and therefore undeniable, it was obvious that so many brain injuries, i.e. concussions, have happened without enough attention paid to them (both personally and medically). Through the many guests I've interviewed and the topics covered, I have noticed with excitement the advancements in brain injury research, development of new technologies and methods to help people who have experienced a brain injury, including concussion. I want people to see how living with a brain injury isn't a sentence, but an unorthodox opportunity to see the world from a new perspective and not to focus on abilities that you feel you may have "lost" or are now more challenging. I had lived with the affects of my severe brain injury for 12 years when I started the podcast in 2015 (it's now 20 years!) and I am still thoroughly enjoying what life can offer, importantly what we can learn! I learn about new research, technologies, methods and about what people don't know about brain injury or even the brain. All of those experiences teach me a lot, especially about what issues are pertinent to audiences.
