Podcaster Q&A

Tell us about yourself – what is your background?

I am from St. John's, NL, Canada. I did an undergrad in Biology at Queen's University, Canada and after graduating I cycled across Canada with 2 friends. I had played water polo since I was 13, but tried triathlon when I started my MPA at UVic, BC, Canada in Jan 2003. After accepting a work term in Ottawa, I was on a bike ride, crashed into a tree, in a 2-week coma, and sustained a severe brain injury. I worked for 4 1/2 years in Ottawa (EDC) and St. John's, then started blogging and podcasting.

Why did you get into podcasting?

I wasn't spreading awareness of brain injury enough by simply blogging. Podcasting seemed like a good way to reach more people and for me to meet people in the brain injury field, whether they be researchers, medical professionals (doctors, physios, ATs, other therapists), community organizers, athletes and others!

How did the idea for the show come about?

Straight from Concussion Talk blog! I wanted to try a new way of getting the issues across. It has evolved from there.

What do you hope listeners take from the show?

More understanding and awareness of brain injury's, including concussion's, myriad symptoms and the importance of your brain for everything! Literally everything we do.

What's been the biggest challenge for you?

Getting sponsors to support the show. It's important information so I never want to make anyone have to pay for it themselves. That being said, it's just me doing this show and it's not free to put out there!

How can your listeners support your show?

By sharing, subscribing, rating, reviewing. The usual stuff. If you know of somebody who may like to sponsor, please share the podcast with them!

Any future plans that you'd like to share?

I just want to keep this podcast going!

Anything else you'd like to share?

I love the ocean (St. John's is on the North Atlantic). Being on it or in it!
