Who am I?

I'm a lifelong learner who enjoys talking about work and psychology together. I’m passionate about helping mission-driven professionals reflect, grow, and lead more effectively—without losing sight of the “human” side of the work. Whether I’m unpacking research or talking with guests, I aim to make big ideas feel practical and relevant to everyday nonprofit life. Outside my professional work, I'm a husband, father, and friend who enjoys sarcasm, wit, staying up to date on current events, and nerding out with cameras and taking photos and videos of whatever or whoever presents an opportunity. I have spent my entire full-time career in the nonprofit world, primarily in the area of supported employment—promoting employment as a vehicle for people with disablities and other barriers to employment to achieve life sustainability. Most recently, I started my own consulting business geared toward helping nonprofits with everything people-related. My professional milestones of leadership, national board member and subject matter statuses, combined with my master's degree in industrial/organizational psychology and soon to be doctorate in learning and organziational change to bring a unique perspective to the intersection of psychology, work, and nonprofit dynamics.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Mission 501: The Podcast is about exploring the psychology of work, with a nonprofit twist. I discuss workplace psychology theories, practices, and other aspects of working in the nonprofit world. I love being a resource for missions and organizations that work differently and put humanity first. The scrappy nature of many nonprofits is how I think of my own way of doing things, and I aim to help people feel good about the work they do. I would say my podcast more complements my list as opposed to fitting into it—I like variety over consistency where I can.

What is my podcast playlist about?

The podcasts I've chosen reflect the many ways I use podcasts for all aspects of my life. Work, general leisure, entertainment, technology, learning, self-care and psychology...each podcast brings a different aspect. I think of it as having a podcast for just about any mood I find myself in. While two of the podcasts are dormant, they have substantial back episodes that I am still listening to today for the first time, and the active podcasts keep me productive, grounded, and tech savvy.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Cortex

Why this podcast?

I love how Cortex delivers a fantastic balance of serious discussion and general human banter. Technology and productivity are toe core focuses, but Myke and Grey tangent into book and movie reviews as well. They talk a lot about things that interest me with work, technology, and overall productivity in life.

2. Speaking of Psychology

Why this podcast?

The APA is a core resource for my work and education. I enjoy getting psychology discussion straight from the gold standard. Kim Mills is a solid interviewer with the guests on the podcast, and there's a huge variety. While some episodes don't click with me like others, I enjoy all things psychology, and rarely do I skip an episode. This is a great podcast for a quick learn if you're curious about why we do...what we do!

3. Ask a Manager

Why this podcast?

This podcast has been dormant for some time, but I keep going back to it. I used it so much when I wasn't in business for myself and was leading a team. It's Q&A scenario based, and I enjoy the "Dear Abby" vibe I get. This podcast answers the question "if you could bring a business podcast back..."

4. Hello Internet

Why this podcast?

This podcast is the ultimate "needs to come back!" example for me. Brady and Grey did a phenomenal job with this show, but they went on hiatus just before Covid and never came back. This is a general banter podcast about all things trends on the internet. Weird news, science development, making fun of each other...a great "two guys talking" podcast.

5. Connected

Why this podcast?

Connected is a technology heavy podcast. It's a group of people reviewing tech with side jabs, sarcasm, and good times. It's Apple-friendly for sure. I love this podcast because I get my tech fix on products and software features I would never find on my own, but use all the time once they teach me what they are!
