Class Act Radio 22 Black Mental Health Matters

May is Mental Health Awareness month! On this episode I mention some alarming statistics of how black americans struggle with mental health issues. In 2018, 58% of Black American young adults 18-25 and 50% of adults 26-49 with serious mental illness did not recieve treatment. These statistics are closely associated with the common stigma among black culture that mental health is taboo. We wear a mask because we have to be strong even when we don't want to. It is important to find a healthy space to let it all out. It is ok to cry but it is bad to hold it in.

Innopsych was birthed from Dr. Jackman’s own experiences and challenges during her search for a therapist. She knew she wanted a therapist who was a woman for color but the process proved itself to be a challenge. She knew that there needed to be a simpler and faster way for people of color to find therapists of color and she was going to create it! Not only did she want to create a directory of therapists of color, but she also wanted to facilitate the process for therapists of color to launch their own private practice in order to increase the pool of therapists of color in the field.

On this episode of Class Act Radio I talk about Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years for the murder of George Flyod. Though the sentencing was considered light to many people, does it represent a change in the right direction towards police accountability?
Michael B Jordan releases a new rum and titles it "J'ouvert." In addition to Nikki Minaj, the caribbean community came together to shun him appropriating caribbean culture and trademarking the term for his rum. Michael B Jordan ultimately changed the name of the rum, however is there a double standard on Caribbean americans calling out black americans on cultural appropriation?
