Catch Ups In My Kitchen - E.129 How Breathing Can Change Your Life with Simon Lamb
play

11/12/24 • 61 min

This week in my kitchen, I'm joined by Simon Lamb, who uses various wellness practices to help people reconnect with nature, because as a society we are becoming increasingly disconnected. In this episode, we discuss his approach through Breath Work, Qigong, and Cold Water Therapy.

Our main focus is on breath work, exploring how intentional breathing can transform our lives. As Simon shares, our breath is our lifeline; when done improperly, it can harm our wellbeing, but when practiced mindfully, it can have a profoundly positive effect.

We dive into different types of breath work, from calming, relaxation-focused techniques that support our nervous system to more intense, transformative practices.

If you're curious about breath work or eager to learn more, this episode is made for you!

As well as focusing on the breath Simon and I explore a range of other topics such as...

  • The power of the breath
  • Why is breath work becoming more of a common wellness practice
  • Forgetting to breathe deeply and only taking short breaths
  • COVID masks and breathing - do you think this affected how we breathe now?
  • Some people can cry after breath work sessions - why is that?
  • Qigong - another practice you focus on - what is it and why do you focus on it
  • Nature connection - I feel like we are becoming more and more disassociated with the outside world - what damage can this do and how can we get back to some normality and association
  • Men’s Mental Health
  • Cold water therapy - I’ve heard it’s not great for women
  • Your own health and wellness journey

This week in my kitchen, I'm excited to be joined by the co-founders of London Nootropics, Zain and Shez, to chat about all things functional mushrooms and adaptogens. We'll explore why so many people are incorporating them into their daily routines.

Zain and Shez are two friends who began adding functional mushrooms to their morning coffee after experiencing the benefits firsthand. Whether you're interested in supporting brain health, regulating the nervous system, or boosting energy without a cortisol spike, functional mushrooms have something to offer.

Over two years, Zain and Shez perfected their blends, creating Mojo, Flow, and Zen — each designed to target specific needs. They launched the brand in 2020, and by 2022, their appearance on Dragons’ Den, followed by investment and support from Deborah Meaden, rapidly increased their brand visibility, helping them grow into the company they are today.

In this episode, I not only want to explore the co-founders’ journey but also go back to basics to uncover why mushrooms are so beneficial for our health. We'll discuss which mushrooms offer which benefits, since it can be a bit overwhelming.

Lion's Mane: Known as the brain mushroom, it supports mental clarity and cognitive well-being.

- Rhodiola: A stress-reliever, helping to combat both mental and physical stress.

Cordyceps: Known for power and endurance, it's perfect for boosting energy, especially for fitness or pre-workout.

- Ashwagandha: The balancing mushroom, it stabilizes physical stress levels, promoting a sense of calm in the body.

In this episode we discuss the following topics:

  • What are adaptogens
  • Why did you start London Nootropics
  • The three different types of blend - flow - zen and mojo - how do they differ?
  • How do mushrooms work in our body?
  • Different mushrooms and their benefits
  • What’s the difference between shrooms and functional mushrooms
  • Mushrooms are becoming more popular in the health and wellness space - is there anything consumers need to look out for when choosing their products in this space?
  • Dragons Den experience and have you made any changes since

If you want to check out London Nootropics and get your hands on some of their blends head here

In my kitchen this week, I am joined by Ella Cooper, Co-Founder of Wylde, an online farmers market that connects you with locally sourced produce! If you, like me, are always on the hunt for fish from UK waters, truly organic eggs, or ethically sourced meat, then this episode is perfect for you.

In this episode, we explore Ella's journey from being 100% vegan—an approach that ultimately harmed her health—to her decision to reintroduce wild-caught fish into her diet. Her difficulty in finding sustainable fish led to the creation of Wylde, a venture she started with her Co-Founder Nick.

Wylde is a remarkable online farmers' market that uses technology to connect farmers, growers, fishermen, hunters, and foragers, delivering the freshest produce directly to your door. We discuss Wylde's mission, the importance of eating seasonally, locally, and ethically, and the challenges of making such choices.

This episode highlights the best in fresh eating, and if you believe in the significance of your food's origins, this service—and this episode—is for you!

Discussion points:

  • Ella's experience being Vegan
  • Not letting your diet define you
  • Health is always being open to learning more and change
  • The concept of Wylde
  • What do consumers not see when they purchase animal products from a supermarket?

  • Wild salmon - what does that actually mean
  • Grass fed beef what does that actually mean
  • What to look out for in order to really get what you are looking for

In my kitchen this week I am joined by Georgia Toffolo to talk about all things dog nutrition. Toff really needs no introduction as I'm sure many of you have seen her gorgeous smile on your screens before, but in this episode, Toff and I are going to talk about a slightly different topic which links to her new business Wild Pack.

Wild Pack is a dog food brand paving the way for raw and natural food. We live in a world now where we are so aware of what we eat, how to live healthier lives, why we should be staying away from ultra-processed foods and how we should check the back of the labels to make sure we know what is inside our food. But what about our dogs' food? We have been conditioned to believe that the dried kibble that is crowding the shop shelves is the best option for our dogs' health when that isn't necessarily the case.

After Toff got her gorgeous dog Monty she had quite a journey with his health, his coat looked terrible, his breath smelt and his tummy was always making strange noises, after Toff got recommended to feed her dog raw food it completely changed Monty and consequently Toff's life and therefore she decided to start a brand promoting this lifestyle for dogs to make dogs healthier and happier.

In this episode we discussed the following topics:

  • Toff's journey to Wild Pack
  • How the idea came about
  • How the process of creating the product was
  • Packaging and logistics
  • Why is raw so good for dogs
  • What is actually in dog kibble
  • Signs to look out for that will indicate you need to change your dogs' food
  • Is food variety good for dogs
  • Dog treats, what is in them and how can they be better
  • The realities of starting a business

This week I am joined by my very good friend Melissa Tattam in order to dive into her secret obsession with Organic food, eating a balanced diet, and learning about personalised nutrition and anti-inflammatories. I say secret because many of you know a lot about Melissa's life and lifestyle but this area is one that she keeps to herself due to not being a qualified nutritionist and not wanting to advise incorrectly or mislead anyone. But she has done so much of her own research and gone through her own journey that I thought it was time to share it.

I think this episode is the epitome of the more you look the more you see because when you begin to research into health and wellness you realise how much we can do in order to be the healthiest version of ourselves.

Melissa has recently taken her health to the next level by going through a personalised plan with Pippa Campbell who is a Functional Nutritionist and with that she has found out more about her body, what vitamins she is low on, what her body can and can't process and a lot lot more!

Melissa is also passionate about making sure she is doing everything she can in order to feel the best version of herself and protect her body from the additives and chemicals that we surround ourselves with every day.

We deep dive into the following topics:

  • What does Melissa's diet look like
  • Why is she obsessed with Organic
  • Everything in moderation - what that means to Melissa
  • Her take on eating dairy and meat
  • Why she never buys any food in plastic packaging
  • Her relationship with food
  • Her Pippa Campbell experience
  • What vitamins and supplements she takes and why
  • Her skin and what she uses
  • What wellness means to her
