Catch Ups In My Kitchen - E.150 Why we should all be cycle syncing with Olivia Brierley
play

04/22/25 • 48 min

In my kitchen this week, I’m joined by the lovely Olivia Breirley to dive deep into the world of cycle syncing and her inspiring journey to pregnancy while managing endometriosis, PCOS, and adenomyosis.

In this raw, honest, and empowering chat, Olivia shares how being told she might never have children led her to completely rethink how she approached her body, her health, and her hormones. She opens up about how working with her cycle — instead of against it — became the game-changer in her pregnancy journey.

One area that Olivia and I deep dive into is seed cycling and how it's a natural way of regulating your hormones due to the nutrients and lignans in these seeds helping regulate estrogen and progesterone levels. Below we have explained how you can seed cycle:

Follicular Phase (Day 1–14)

(From the first day of your period to ovulation)

Seeds to eat:

  • 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds
  • 1 tablespoon of ground pumpkin seeds

These seeds are rich in lignans and omega-3s, which can help support estrogen production and metabolism. They also contain zinc, which is great for egg quality and overall reproductive health.

Luteal Phase (Day 15–28)

(From ovulation to the start of your next period)

Seeds to eat:

  • 1 tablespoon of ground sunflower seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of ground sesame seeds

Why:

These seeds help support healthy progesterone levels. Sunflower seeds are high in vitamin E and selenium, which support progesterone production, while sesame seeds contain lignans that can help modulate estrogen levels if they get too high in this phase.

The other topics we dive into are:

  • Olivia's journey and experience with endometriosis, PCOS and adenomyosis
  • The power of cycle syncing and how you used it to change your fertility trajectory
  • The effects of hormonal contraception, particularly the pill, on your cycle and fertility — and Olivia’s honest, thoughtful views on it after years of navigating it herself
  • Societies impossible expectations of women vs the reality
  • Why understanding and connecting with your cycle is so empowering, whether you’re trying to conceive or simply want to feel better, more balanced, and in tune with your body
  • Wellness non-negotiable that have helped you deal with endometriosis and PCOS

This episode is a beautiful reminder of how powerful our cycles are, and how making small, intentional shifts to support your hormones can change everything.

Whether you're currently dealing with hormonal issues, curious about natural contraception options, or wanting to learn how to better support your body through every phase — this one’s for you.

This week in my kitchen, I'm joined by Howey, the head of coffee at Grind, to delve into the art of making delicious coffee and explore the secrets behind Grind's success.

Grind began as an independent coffee shop in Shoreditch in 2011, known for its flat whites, great music, and vibrant atmosphere. It has since evolved into a much larger brand, with products now available in Tesco, Waitrose, and on Amazon, bringing that unique Shoreditch coffee shop experience to homes across the UK.

Coffee, much like wine, is more than just a beverage; it's a culture, a lifestyle, and an art form. In this episode, we celebrate all that coffee embodies. I also get the chance to address some pressing questions and debunk myths, such as whether coffee contains mould and if oat milk is really as bad as some say.

If you're as passionate about coffee as Howey and I are, this episode is definitely for you!

We discussed the following topics:

  • What makes a good coffee?
  • Coffee roasts - what does this mean and does it affect the caffeine?
  • Milk and coffee - Milk can really affect the taste of the coffee
  • Is oat milk as bad for us as it seems
  • Decaf coffee - what is the process it goes through
  • Does coffee have mould in it?
  • How should we be storing our coffee does this affect the taste and shelf life?
  • Some of the crucial parts to Grinds Success?
  • Why do you blend coffee?
  • Sustainability and being B Corp
  • Which chain would you say does the worst cup of coffee?
  • What’s next for Grind

Healthy Habits is more than just a wellness brand — it's a lifestyle movement rooted in simplicity, intention, and impact. I wanted to bring you the tools, techniques, and daily rituals that make feeling good feel easy and that has started with mouth tape.

In this episode, I take you back to where it all began — when I was 11 years old, writing a food blog also called Healthy Habits. What started as a childhood passion has now come full circle, evolving into a brand that brings together the tools, techniques, and rituals I genuinely love and use daily. My hope is that they help you build your own Healthy Habits, effortlessly.

I then discuss the power of mouth tape and how it has completely changed my sleep, as well as answering some common and most frequently asked questions about mouth taping.

Well Easy

Dark Chocolate and Pistachio Cookie Recipe:

(Makes 10 small cookies)

100g Organic Ghee

25g Raw Pistachio Butter + more to drizzle pre/post baking

150g Coconut Sugar

1 egg

175g plain flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp flakey salt

1 tsp vanilla paste

30g shelled pistachios, chopped

70g 80% dark chocolate chips

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 200c. Add your ghee to a saucepan over medium-high heat and melt it down. Pour into your mixing bowl, add the 25g pistachio cream and stir together. Allow to cool for 10 minutes, it will be very hot.

2. Add the sugar to a bowl, then add the egg and vanilla. Add the flour, baking powder and salt.

3. Add the chopped pistachios and dark choc. Mix into the batter. Preheat the oven to 200c. Chill the batter for around 30 minutes, if not longer. Line a large tray (or two) with parchment paper and then scoop out 10 small balls of dough onto the tray, rolling them into neat balls then pressing down into a cookie shape, around 2cm thick.

4. Bake for 12 minutes roughly until golden but they will still be very soft. Allow to set for 15-20 minutes before digging in! If they firm up too much the next day, pop in the microwave for 15 seconds to re melt the chocolate

In my kitchen this week I am joined by Georgia Toffolo to talk about all things dog nutrition. Toff really needs no introduction as I'm sure many of you have seen her gorgeous smile on your screens before, but in this episode, Toff and I are going to talk about a slightly different topic which links to her new business Wild Pack.

Wild Pack is a dog food brand paving the way for raw and natural food. We live in a world now where we are so aware of what we eat, how to live healthier lives, why we should be staying away from ultra-processed foods and how we should check the back of the labels to make sure we know what is inside our food. But what about our dogs' food? We have been conditioned to believe that the dried kibble that is crowding the shop shelves is the best option for our dogs' health when that isn't necessarily the case.

After Toff got her gorgeous dog Monty she had quite a journey with his health, his coat looked terrible, his breath smelt and his tummy was always making strange noises, after Toff got recommended to feed her dog raw food it completely changed Monty and consequently Toff's life and therefore she decided to start a brand promoting this lifestyle for dogs to make dogs healthier and happier.

In this episode we discussed the following topics:

  • Toff's journey to Wild Pack
  • How the idea came about
  • How the process of creating the product was
  • Packaging and logistics
  • Why is raw so good for dogs
  • What is actually in dog kibble
  • Signs to look out for that will indicate you need to change your dogs' food
  • Is food variety good for dogs
  • Dog treats, what is in them and how can they be better
  • The realities of starting a business

Catch Ups In My Kitchen - E.129 How Breathing Can Change Your Life with Simon Lamb
play

11/12/24 • 61 min

This week in my kitchen, I'm joined by Simon Lamb, who uses various wellness practices to help people reconnect with nature, because as a society we are becoming increasingly disconnected. In this episode, we discuss his approach through Breath Work, Qigong, and Cold Water Therapy.

Our main focus is on breath work, exploring how intentional breathing can transform our lives. As Simon shares, our breath is our lifeline; when done improperly, it can harm our wellbeing, but when practiced mindfully, it can have a profoundly positive effect.

We dive into different types of breath work, from calming, relaxation-focused techniques that support our nervous system to more intense, transformative practices.

If you're curious about breath work or eager to learn more, this episode is made for you!

As well as focusing on the breath Simon and I explore a range of other topics such as...

  • The power of the breath
  • Why is breath work becoming more of a common wellness practice
  • Forgetting to breathe deeply and only taking short breaths
  • COVID masks and breathing - do you think this affected how we breathe now?
  • Some people can cry after breath work sessions - why is that?
  • Qigong - another practice you focus on - what is it and why do you focus on it
  • Nature connection - I feel like we are becoming more and more disassociated with the outside world - what damage can this do and how can we get back to some normality and association
  • Men’s Mental Health
  • Cold water therapy - I’ve heard it’s not great for women
  • Your own health and wellness journey
