How to Handle the Whiners, Complainers and Slackers at Work
Career Talk: Learn - Grow - Thrive
08/22/19 • 15 min
Complainers / whiners
- Don't fuel the fire
- End conversations to get to it
- Re-direct the conversation, get back on track
- Is there a root cause you could solve for?
- Come to Jesus conversation, is this the right role?
- Ask the whiner what their solutions would be
- Spin to a positive
- Call them out
- Sell them on the opportunity
- Set expectations
- See if they have voiced the concerns to their leader
- Let them know you heard them
- Can you find common ground with non work topics?
- If its impacting you, be honest about it
- Add positive, uplifting people to your day
- Avoidance
- Ask if they are looking for input / advice / guidance
Slackers:
- Communicate
- Set clear expectations
- Set regular check ins / status updates
- Offer to help with any roadblocks / questions
- Share how their work impacts you / the team
- Their lack of work is not your responsibility
- You don't need to cover for them all the time
- Be honest and blunt
- Have a candid conversation with leadership
- Focus and prioritize / stay the course
- Don't let it get you down, stay positive and motivated
- Use them as a don't lesson
- This is not an opportunity to pick up bad habits
- Don't become a complainer about your slacker
- Limit your yes's to work that doesn't involve that person
- Ask yourself, does this impact me? For real?
- Is this person ok?
- Their work does not become your work
- Could be an opportunity to shine

Notes:
Dictonary.com
The persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own effort or skills
Imposter Syndrome is very prevalent in the workplace
The why isn't always going to be clear
Every person is a human, all humans think differently, have different pasts, different traumas, different work experiences, different school experiences, etc.
Signs of imposter syndrome:
- Self-doubt
- Self-sabotage
- Perfectionism
- Difficulty accepting praise
- Negative self talk
- Constantly comparing yourself to others
- Overachieving
- Fear of failure
- Minimizing your success
- Fear you won't live up to expectations
- Burnout
- Workaholic - too many hours
- Minimize your brilliance
- Constant need for external validation
- Lacking confidence
- Difficulty dealing with pressure
- Anxiety
- Feeling like you're not good enough
- Distrust or ignoring your intuition
- You're the best of worst, no middle ground
- Not applying to jobs despite being qualified
What causes imposter syndrome?
A lot of things can cause us to get imposter syndrome
A few examples:
- School or work pressure
- Childhood experiences (constantly being criticized)
- Perfectionism
- Mental health status - bad week
- Mental health disorders (examples: OCD, Anxiety)
- Success - achieved it but feel you don't deserve it
- Personality traits
- Lack of diversity and representation
- Major life changes
- Societal expectations
I've personally struggled with imposter syndrome many times.
Sometimes it's a phase of life that it something I had to work through for extended periods of time (Example - layoff )
Others it may pop up quickly and temporarily (Example - working on website)
How can imposter syndrome impact your career?
- Work-life balance problems
- Burnout
- Missed opportunities
- Trash communication
- Lack of career progression
- Decreased career satisfaction
- Fear of failure (analysis paralysis)
- Lack of self-development or motivation to do any
- Procrastination
- Confidence takes a hit
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
- Own it / acknowledge it
- Talk about it
- Retrain your mind (correct self-doubting thoughts, turn them into affirmations and keep repeating them)
- Ask for help/support
- Learn to accept praise
- Take time for mindfulness and / or meditation
- Set realistic goals
- Learn to be flexible (goals, perfectionism)
- Learn new skills
- May want or need to get help from a counselor or therapist, etc.
- Facts vs feelings (great review vs feeling like you're not doing enough)
- Embrace failure and the lessons it brings
- Remind yourself of whats important to you
- Recognize and stop the spiral
- Talk to yourself how you'd talk to your best friend (kindness, compassion)

Have you ever wondered how to better sell yourself in an interview?
Or have you ever wondered how you could make yourself stand out from other people who are applying to the same positions?
Instead of going through sales tactics, let’s talk about what candidates do that set themselves apart from the others.
What candidates do to set themselves apart in an interview:

Career Talk: Learn - Grow - Thrive
12/20/16 • 8 min
Feedback is so important, I cannot stress enough how important feedback is.
Here’s a question for you:
Do you ask for feedback often? At work? At home? With friends?
Why or why not?
Take some time to think about that.
Am I asking my boss for feedback?
Am I asking my colleagues for feedback?
Am I asking my spouse at home for feedback?
Am I asking my family for feedback?
Am I asking my friends what their thoughts are?
This is really important.
Specifically as it relates to our career, feedback is a really interesting part of our jobs that most of us only receive once a year.
Often it’s in the form of annual review, performance review or a merit increase conversation.
It is usually a very formal conversation and often it is not very helpful or productive.
All employees care about what their raise is going to be.
Often managers need to just get the reviews done.
I want you to think about how you can get more feedback throughout the year so you can constantly be improving.
If you sit down with your boss and they tell you hey Steph I think you did a really good job in A, B, C categories, I think you could use improvements in D, E and F categories and here are some examples from 3, 6 and 11 months ago.
What?!?! Why wouldn’t we get that feedback right away and on the spot.
Here’s the deal, you need to ask for the feedback.
Ask hey manager how can I improve? What suggestions for you have for me?
You need to be the one who takes charge of the conversation.
THEN you need to be grateful for whatever the response is.
Feedback is a gift.
EVEN if we don’t like the feedback we get.
It tells us how we can improve and what people’s perceptions are of you.
It is a gift.
Even if you disagree, even if you think it’s complete bullshit.
Now you know!
Don’t react in a negative way if you get bad feedback, don’t get defensive, take notes, ask follow up questions.
You want to make the conversation easy so the person will want to share their feedback with you in the future.
Ask questions like:
How can I improve X metric?
What areas can I improve in?
Where do I do well?
What are my strengths?
Don’t forget to share your gratitude for the feedback!!!
Thank you so much for listening.
