Captured Sound

I just recently discovered Amherst State Park which is only a 15 minute drive down the road. The grounds of a former convent gives access to Ellicott creek with hiking trails, kayaking and fishing. This recording capturing the moving creek and birds was recorded with the Tascam DR-05X on a mini tripod placed on the bank.

Freight Train Passing

This CSX freight train was captured at the River Rd and Ward Rd crossing in North Tonawanda, NY using a Tascam DR-40 set to the A/B position and a low cut set to 80Hz.

I’ve heard this train for months now at my home approximately 7 miles (11.25 km) away and it can be heard faintly in some of my backyard recordings. Being so close was a stunning experience, feeling the ground move, watching the tracks wave as the rail cars passed over and one lone spike that would jump making a hammering sound.

House Wren

For the past few years we have had a few bird houses in our backyard only to see them unused until this year. A house wren moved in this spring and we ended up with 3 young.

In this recording you’ll hear the song of the wren along with young Starling feeding in their nest a few yards away and I believe in the very low background my wife on the phone. This audio was captured using my homemade parabolic dish with a lavaliere microphone ( I don’t know the brand) connected to the mic input on the Tascam DR-05X.

Unfortunately I lost the audio I captured when the young were being fed by the parents. I had clipped the lav mic onto the birdhouse while they were out hunting for bugs. The audio was accidentally deleted.
