08/18/22 • 2 min

This clip is from an hour long morning recording in March. I had my SASS setup in the backyard near my feeders when this plane flew overhead.

This recording was captured using my DIY SASS microphone which has four AOM-5024HD-R mics wired in parallel and a Tascam DR-05x.

I took a walk one early morning and found the water washing up to be calming among all of the sounds of life around me. This audio was captured using the Roland CS-10EM Binaural monitors with the Tascam DR-05X field recorder while sitting on the edge of the Niagara River at Isleview Park in Tonawanda, New York.

Captured Sound - Thunder, Rain, Birds oh my
play

02/20/20 • 35 min

This audio was captured in my backyard under a porch with the Tascam DR-40 mounted on a tripod with a deadcat windshield.

This is a long unlooped recording of a heavy rain, gutters over flowing and then the calm. The yard starts to come back alive with the following light rain as birds ( I think a Northern Cardinal, house finch’s and Robins) start to talk again. Thunder approaches and a plane flies overhead as the next storm rolls in and again leading to a clam rain and the song of birds. This truly is one of my favorite recordings. Enjoy.

Captured Sound - Beach at 55th Street in Ocean City, NJ
play

02/20/20 • -1 min

This audio was captured in stereo with the Tascam DR-40 at the waters break in Ocean City NJ in July of 2019 at the 55th Street entrance. You can hear the light waves breaking while tumbling the colorful ocean pebbles and shells. You can even hear twice the shells rolling into my beach chair which was in the shallow waters edge.

I just recently discovered Amherst State Park which is only a 15 minute drive down the road. The grounds of a former convent gives access to Ellicott creek with hiking trails, kayaking and fishing. This recording capturing the moving creek and birds was recorded with the Tascam DR-05X on a mini tripod placed on the bank.

Captured Sound - Freight Train Passing

Freight Train Passing

Captured Sound

play

06/12/20 • 3 min

This CSX freight train was captured at the River Rd and Ward Rd crossing in North Tonawanda, NY using a Tascam DR-40 set to the A/B position and a low cut set to 80Hz.

I’ve heard this train for months now at my home approximately 7 miles (11.25 km) away and it can be heard faintly in some of my backyard recordings. Being so close was a stunning experience, feeling the ground move, watching the tracks wave as the rail cars passed over and one lone spike that would jump making a hammering sound.

Captured Sound - John B Austin Nature Trail
play

02/12/22 • 0 min

Always check your batteries. During the summer of 2020 my family and I took a walk on the trails at the John B Austin nature trail and found this small little 3 foot falls. This audio was captured with the built in mics on the Tascam DR-05x.

At the time of the recording I can remember being frustrated that I could hear my family talking in the distance and when I realized that my batteries had died i figured it was a waisted opportunity. I recently found this recording in a folder on my phone when it played during a shuffle. I instantly remembered the moment and how frustrated I was at the time. Now, my thoughts have completely changed. Though the focus of the recording was the water, it is my family in the background that I focus on now. The conversation they are having is inaudible but is now what I find to be the beauty of this 40 second recording. It has taught me that the surroundings can be a wonderful addition to the focal point of a recording. Or maybe I’m just biased with this particular one. Either way I find myself listening back to this recording very often.

Captured Sound - Testing Custom Dead Cat
play

02/12/22 • 2 min

I purchased some faux fur and made a custom dead cat to fit over mics and my recorder. It was a pain to sew but hopefully helps in windy conditions. I added pull cords to ensure a snugger fit. I plan to build a DIY blimp soon which was also the reason for such a big dead cat. I used SE 7 matched pair with my Tascam DR-40. The mics were mounted about 6 inches apart, this was just a test of the wind cat so i wasn’t concerned with placement. 35 mph gusts.
