Capital Wasteland: A Mind of Sanity Podcast

09/18/23 • 60 min

Next on Cap-i-tal Was-tee-land! We are bringing you the truth about greenwashing no matter how bad it hurts! Greenwashing is a deceptive marketing and public relations practice in which a company or organization falsely portrays itself as environmentally friendly or responsible, even when its actions and products have a negative impact on the environment.

Misleading Labels: Companies may use labels, certifications, or logos that suggest their products are eco-friendly, even if only a small aspect of the product is environmentally responsible. This can include vague or unverified claims like "green," "natural," or "eco."

Selective Disclosure: Some businesses might emphasize one positive environmental aspect of their operations while downplaying or concealing less eco-friendly practices. For example, a company might highlight energy-efficient lightbulbs in its stores while ignoring excessive packaging waste.

Exaggerated Claims: Greenwashing often involves making exaggerated or unverified claims about a product's environmental benefits. This can include assertions that a product is "100% green" or "completely sustainable" without any concrete evidence to support such claims.

Irrelevant Information: Companies may provide information that, while true, is irrelevant to the environmental impact of their products or operations. For instance, a fast-food chain might boast about its recycling efforts while ignoring the fact that its packaging generates significant waste.

Distracting from Larger Issues: Some organizations engage in greenwashing as a way to divert attention from more significant environmental concerns. They may highlight a minor environmental initiative to shift focus away from more substantial environmental problems.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

Helena: So I can share depressing news with the world! And because education is one of the most essential parts of any environmental effort. While it can be depressing, the information is important. To make a change this knowledge needs to reach more people. Richard: Cause Helena needed an outlet and I already had a podcast so it worked out really well. Plus I know nothing about environmental stuff and make the perfect person for her to bounce conversations off of.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

A deeper understanding of our world and the changes that are happening due to climate change. But more importantly we wish people to understand that we must hold corporations accountable for their previous roles as well as their current role in the environmental crisis. We all need to understand that individually our impact isn’t going to amount to much but together we can make a difference and build a future that is less bleak.

Which episode should someone start with?

“Episode 2) What is Climate Change? Why is it important?” It is a very basic episode. All it is an explanation of what is Climate Change, how it is happening, What is happening, and why we need to know about this information. We felt it was the first one we needed to do after introducing ourselves and it really is a good fit for starting out when listening.

What is your vision for your show?

To make an impact. To get people to understand that this is a man made problem and it will need man made solutions. We want to reach over all divides whether they be religious, political, economic, or anything else and help foster an understanding of what’s happening to our planet. We hope someone will hear us and maybe they’ll take a small step in the right direction. Or maybe they’ll start bugging their representatives and demand we fight climate change for the better.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

As Helena is just getting into listening she doesn't have an answer but Richard loves podcasts. His top three podcasts are: Two Bears One Cave as he is a big fan of comedy (particularly Tom Segura). Star Talk with Neil DeGrasse Tyson because science. And last but certainly not least, The Innocence Project. In Richard's opinion there will never be a ore important topic than the ones shared on the Innocence Project's podcast.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

Amid diverse name ideas like 'Echoes of Gaia' and 'Sustainable Green,' choosing proved elusive. Simulating conversations with Fenrir, our dog, didn't yield any results. But 'Wasteland' felt intriguing, but needed more. Remembering Fallout 3’s disc jockey Three Dogs' sign-off struck a chord. “Bringing you the Truth no matter how bad it hurts.” This combined with an in-game nickname for post apocalyptic D.C. told us we had the perfect name. “Capital Wasteland.”

Tell us a bit about yourself

Helena has a degree in environmental studies. When she’s not at work or staying up to date on environmental science, she’s a nerd at heart who spends a lot of time playing video games, watching anime, and making chain maille. Usually reserved, tending to say very little, this podcast is her outside of her comfort zone so she can share something she is passionate about. Richard is the host of The Mind of Sanity Podcast as well as the co-host of “Capital Wasteland” & “Chains of the Patriarchy."
