CanaryPod - The Canary's Podcast

THIS PODCAST CONTAINS LANGUAGE AND CONTENT SOME PEOPLE MAY FIND OFFENSIVE. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THIS EPISODE ARE THE OPINIONS OF THE HOST AND GUESTS.

Welcome to series two of #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In a special episode, I meet the First Lady of the renowned Ghetto Youths International record label, who has just dropped her debut EP, Conversations in Key: Sherieta.

Mr Topple x Sherieta

Sherieta has been in the music industry for many years. She is already an established songwriter and backing singer, having worked with some of the biggest names in reggae like Marcia Griffiths and Tarrus Riley. But she has also steadily released tracks of her own, including 2010’s Reggae is Life. Now, under the guidance of the Marley heritage Ghetto Youths, she has released her debut EP. Conversations in Key is a stunning project. The six tracks showcase her remarkable voice fantastically, along with her unique songwriting ability and top class musical arrangement and production. Conversations in Key has cemented her status as one of the most exciting musicians to emerge from Jamaica.

So, I caught up with Sherieta for the #ToppleUncaged podcast. We discussed Conversations in Key, her journey to this point, musical inspirations, the current movement of artists emerging from Jamaica and more.

Enjoy!

Welcome to series two of #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In a special episode, I spoke with a rising star ascending from Jamaica: Mortimer.

Mr Topple x Mortimer

Mortimer has been releasing music for the best part of this decade. Having dropped his debut, Message Music, in 2014 he went on to work twice with the Grammy nominated Protojé, gathering him more attention. Since then, he’s released several tracks to widespread popularity and acclaim, including Careful and Warning. But now, he’s back with the stunning reggae/soul hybrid ballad Lightning. It is a glorious mix of the two genres, with stripped-back instrumental arrangements allowing Mortimer’s versatile voice to truly shine. To accompany Lightning he has also released a beautifully shot video.

So, I caught up with Mortimer for the #ToppleUncaged podcast. We spoke about Lightning, his journey to this point, inspirations, his faith, conscious music and it’s influence and more.

Enjoy!

In a special episode, I met a rising star on the music scene: Jaz Elise.

Mr Topple x Jaz Elise

Jaz hails from Kingston, Jamaica. She grew up surrounded by music; her father is a pianist and guitarist and her mother an accomplished singer in her own right. Jaz honed her skills in local church choirs and at school.

Her first entry into the music scene was in 2018, with her debut single For You dropping in November that year. It was an intricate mix of dancehall and reggae. That and the conscious lyrics, giving thanks to the country that raised her, set the tone for her style. She recently followed this up with her second track Fresh and Clean, a delicious mix of afrobeat and dancehall which showcases Jaz’s ability as a vocalist perfectly.

So, I caught up with her for the #ToppleUncaged podcast. We discussed her musical upbringing, who has inspired her, the growing movement of female artists coming out of the roots Revival movement and more.

Enjoy!
