Welcome to series two of #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

I’ve got a two-part treat for you because I had the opportunity to interview one of the most important artists of a generation: Micah Shemaiah. Here’s part one.

Mr Topple x Micah Shemaiah: Part One

Micah’s been one of the most prolific and influential roots reggae artists of recent years. Searingly conscious, musically ingenious and with a stunning back catalogue to boot, he has blazed a trail in terms of message music. Moreover, Micah is a passionate advocate of vinyl, leading the way in promoting this form of music release. But it is perhaps his worldview which is most profound. Micah is a highly skilled orator with an almost unparalleled depth of though in the music industry. He is currently set to release The Forgotten Scrolls, a three-part series of vinyl music.

So, I caught up with him for a two-part special of the #ToppleUncaged podcast. In this, part one, we discussed The Forgotten Scrolls, the music industry, artificial intelligence and technology, the cult of celebrity and more. Part two will be released very soon!

Enjoy!

Welcome to series two of #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In a special episode, I meet the First Lady of the renowned Ghetto Youths International record label, who has just dropped her debut EP, Conversations in Key: Sherieta.

Mr Topple x Sherieta

Sherieta has been in the music industry for many years. She is already an established songwriter and backing singer, having worked with some of the biggest names in reggae like Marcia Griffiths and Tarrus Riley. But she has also steadily released tracks of her own, including 2010’s Reggae is Life. Now, under the guidance of the Marley heritage Ghetto Youths, she has released her debut EP. Conversations in Key is a stunning project. The six tracks showcase her remarkable voice fantastically, along with her unique songwriting ability and top class musical arrangement and production. Conversations in Key has cemented her status as one of the most exciting musicians to emerge from Jamaica.

So, I caught up with Sherieta for the #ToppleUncaged podcast. We discussed Conversations in Key, her journey to this point, musical inspirations, the current movement of artists emerging from Jamaica and more.

Welcome to series two of #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In a special episode, I got to meet one of the most talented artists on the planet: Kabaka Pyramid:

Mr Topple x Kabaka Pyramid

Kabaka has been in the music industry for over a decade. But it was his 2018 album Kontraband which immediately propelled him into groundbreaking territory. It fused reggae with hip-hop, afrobeat, soul and other genres. Lyrically, Kontraband was also one of the most important works of last year. But moreover, it was the combination of these elements coupled with top class production that made the album an instant classic. It showcased Kabaka’s unique talents exquisitely.

So, I caught up with him at the Market Place bar in central London for the #ToppleUncaged podcast. We discussed Kontraband, how reggae-based music has evolved over the decades, his views on politics, Africa and more.

Welcome to series two of #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In a special episode, I’m joined by one of the most celebrated artists of the past two decades: Tarrus Riley.

Mr Topple x Tarrus Riley

Riley has a career spanning over 15 years. With a voice grounded in both reggae and soul, he is responsible for one of the biggest songs of the noughties: She’s Royal. But he’s not defined by one track, more by his approach to music, his effortless mixing of genres and his ability to reach out to people via his work. But now, Riley’s eclecticism has reached new heights. He’s recently released his first EP. It’s called B.L.E.M. and features some of the hottest artists of 2019 like Stonebwoy, along with the production talents of rising star IzyBeats.

So, I caught up with Riley for the #ToppleUncaged podcast. We chatted about B.L.E.M., his career, his thoughts on the current music scene and why his work is so conscious.

THIS PODCAST CONTAINS LANGUAGE AND CONTENT SOME PEOPLE MAY FIND OFFENSIVE. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THIS EPISODE ARE THE OPINIONS OF THE HOST AND GUESTS.

Welcome to series two of #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In a special extended episode, I’m joined by a friend of the show and a reggae icon: Clinton Fearon.

Mr Topple x Clinton Fearon

Clinton has been in the music business for 50 years. He’s enjoyed a career that started when he joined the mythical group The Gladiators all the way back in 1969. A string of acclaimed singles and albums followed, as did Clinton’s work for legends like Lee Scratch Perry. At the end of the 1980s, he departed The Gladiators to form his own collective, The Boogie Brown Band. 12 albums followed, and now he’s back.

Clinton’s brand new album is History Say. To say it is pure ‘Fearon’ doesn’t do it justice. It’s a glorious, intricate mix of styles; grounded in reggae but interspersed with jazz, funky soul, calypso, dub and some rock thrown in for good measure. But as always with Clinton, it’s his wonderful ability to mix serious political and social messages with some good old fashioned fun which really shines. The top class instrumentation, vocal arrangements and production finish off what is perhaps this artist’s seminal work.

So, I caught up with Clinton for the #ToppleUncaged podcast. We discussed History Say, his continued success, the current state of the music and political worlds and modern technology, the latter being something he’s not too keen on!

THIS PODCAST CONTAINS LANGUAGE AND CONTENT SOME PEOPLE MAY FIND OFFENSIVE AND UPSETTING. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THIS EPISODE ARE THE OPINIONS OF THE HOST AND GUESTS. THE GUESTS GAVE THEIR FULL PERMISSION FOR SHARING THIS INTERVIEW.

Welcome to series two of #ToppleUncaged!

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In the second of two special episodes, I meet Victoria Cheney, mother of Antonia Payne-Cheney.

Antonia’s story

Her daughter’s story about battling chronic life-threatening illness, the NHS and the state is remarkable. It is one of hope, trauma, resilience and a family’s love.

I spoke to Victoria at length about Antonia’s journey and her current situation. She went from being an outgoing, active teenager to almost dying several times. Along the way were countless diagnoses and, what they both feel is clear medical neglect. You can listen to the second part of my exclusive interview below. Also, click here to listen to the first part.

Continue reading to find out more about what has happened to Antonia and how you can get involved.

https://www.thecanary.co/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/NEW-VICTORIA-PART-TWO-DRAFT-MP3.mp3

Listen on iTunes here.

The story continues...

In article one, I discussed Antonia’s story. You can read in more detail about the multitude of illnesses that she lives with, including hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), gastroparesis and craniocervical junction syndrome:

Antonia and her mother Victoria

It is hard to express the levels of “trauma” (as one psychiatrist put it) that medical professionals and the state have subjected Antonia to. Her illnesses have been ignored; care packages abandoned; experts in her illnesses not listened to; branded as a ‘drug seeker’; and her mother accused of making up her conditions. It has gone as far as Antonia accusing one consultant of physical assault. She now lives with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to her experiences.

It is perhaps best to let Victoria’s voice speak about this. Below is an extract from an email she wrote to Baroness Blackwood. Victoria gave permission for The Canary to publish this. Blackwood is parliamentary under secretary of state at the Department of Health and Social Care. She also lives with EDS.

A damning testimony

As Victoria said to Blackwood:

You wrote... imagine being pushed from pillar to post with no one knowing what is wrong with you – steadily getting worse – that is so true – but imagine having that experience – being diagnosed by experts and being treated – getting on a path to better health and wellbeing and then due to a system acting wrongly – having your protocols by those experts and treatment plan taken away.

Every week, The Canary will be bringing you an innovative podcast for the media landscape; hosted by me, Steve Topple.

In a special episode, I met one of the the rising stars to emerge from Jamaica in the past few years: Bella Blair.

Mr Topple x Bella Blair

Bella was heavily involved in the performing arts from a young age, having studied it at every level of education. She first came to prominence via her comedy skits on her YouTube channel. But music was clearly her first love. Her first venture into this was featuring on Eddie Ferrer’s Jigsaw Love back in 2012. More music followed, but it was her 2018 EP Aura which cemented her status as an artistic force to be reckoned with. It is an ingenious mix of genres, from ambient RnB to soul, via afrobeat, dancehall and reggae. But it’s Bella’s voice and storytelling which really set Aura out as such a strong project. Now, she’s back with her latest track. Called Mistake Too, it’s a bang-up-to-date afrobeat RnB track, produced by the UK-based Jamie Rodigan and Aaron Horn.

So, I caught up with Bella for the #ToppleUncaged podcast. We chatted about her musical upbringing and career, the diverse mix of styles and genres she is becoming renowned for, the music industry and more.
