Canadian Salad - Episode 22: When Canada Isn't That Into You

Episode 22: When Canada Isn't That Into You

01/28/25 • 35 min

Canadian Salad

Universities are losing money. Some are closing. With IRCC rolling the dice in their cuts to international students, the impact has only just begun. Because Hostion and I came to Canada as international students, we feel the weight of this topic deeply and that's why we have to talk about it.
Join us as we discuss how these 'knee-jerk' reactions to international students are causing real economic, diplomatic and humane consequences. We understand the need to address current issues - but if we're honest, these shortsighted policies are disrupting and harming real people. Not only that, but immigrants and international students are the rebuttal, the national answer and the global power to expand into markets worldwide instead of relying on our southern neighbour. International students are a part of Canada's ecosystem - when one tree is cut down, the whole forest and all the creatures feel it. Join us for a real and personal episode which underscores the invaluable contributions of international students to Canada's society and economy. Plus, stick around for some fun trivia at the end!

Dishes Out: Trump's Canadian Dream

We couldn't help but tackle Trump’s bonkers claim about making Canada the 51st state. We'll speculate why Trump is so obsessed with the Great White North—maybe he’s just thirsty for some maple syrup? Maybe poutine? We'll see if CBSA lets a felon . . . er, we mean a president cross the border. Ahem . . .
We do dish out on Baby Trump, aka Pierre Pollievre, and his bid for Prime Minister. We'll address your unspoken political fears mixing humour with critical commentary. Let's face it: we all need a bit of humour. Laughter is resistance. So join us for our juicy takes and laughs. Keep clapping back and make your voices heard!

Dishes Out: Assimilation Per Se

"Immigrants need to assimilate". What does that even mean? Assimilate into what? What ideal are people thinking of when they proclaim this? The very question ignores the diverse landscape of Canada, from west to east coast. If people would be really honest, they'd realize not everyone is the same and not everyone needs to fit into a mysterious, intangible mold! Is Canada a factory now?
Welcome back to another lively episode where Andrea is joined by a special guest and marital roommate of almost 10 years, her husband Mark! Filling in temporarily into Hostion's big shoes (not that he has big feet), Mark and Andrea clap back against a comment that recently said immigrants are okay but there needs to be assimilation programs for them when they arrive. We'll tackle this Canadian idealism and speak to the reality that immigrants already do as much as they can to 'fit in' and be acceptable to Canadians. From changing their names to hiding their culture, immigrants try to assimilate but it will never be enough because no one knows what kind of standard assimilation provides! Everyone has their own unique identity, born in Canada or born outside of Canada. Let's get away from demanding a computerized, predictable and bland people and let's embrace what is good, diverse and beautiful.
