Ramadan: A Global Expression of Collective Faith
Canadian Salad
04/09/24 • 39 min
Ramadan is special. Faith, religion and family shape how we make the holiday meaningful either in our home country or here in Canada. What is the sacred and collective observance of Ramadan and how do Muslims in Canada see this religious day in light of a society that doesn’t observe it?
Hostion and Andrea invite two guests, Bushra from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Fayrouz from Libya, to share their experiences of observing Ramadan both in Canada and in their countries of origin. Hear how community can help create collective joy and worship. Listen to them share how navigating Ramadan can be hard while Muslims are being oppressed in other parts of the world. What are their traditions? Why is Ramadan important? The hardest thing about observing Ramadan in Canada is, well . . . you’ll just have to listen.

Canadian Work Excuses
Canadian Salad
05/07/24 • 42 min
"You don't have any Canadian work experience." As immigrants, we apply for jobs, get the interview and then we're slammed with this comment. Our education, our global work experience and even our skills somehow can't match up to these "high" work expectations in Canada. And we continue to be denied a job.
Join Andrea and Hostion as they explore (through ranting) the harm denying a person a job can do - not just for a person but for Canada as a whole. Free labour, unpaid internships and even achieving a Canadian higher education shouldn't be the cost to be employed. There are ways to do better and these two immigrant friends have solutions. It's time for Canadian employers and Canada to listen.

In The Face Of A Bully
Canadian Salad
11/12/24 • 40 min
On November 5th, Donald J. Trump was re-elected to the presidential seat for the United States. His platform built on the dehumanization of immigrants and promises to deport masses of people, is no joke. We know he lies, but when he spouts out racism and hate, we know he is serious and will do what he can to make inhumane things happen
In this episode, a close friend and fellow immigrant to Canada from the States, will join me, Andrea, to discuss the consequences of the bully that will be reinstalled in the global superpower in the south. We will explore the rising fears and anxieties among immigrants and the lack of accountability we already see in Canada’s leadership when it comes to immigrant, migrant and human rights for the Global Majority.
We’ll discuss Trump's proposed policies, including his plan to detain immigrants in camps and deporting refugees back to dangerous countries, drawing parallels with historical atrocities from the Japanese internment camps to the concentration camps of Germany. We call for advocacy, community support, and political engagement - because the bully is not going to go away.
We need to determine if we will stand up or stand by. We hope Canada will do the latter.

Loving the Skin I'm In
Canadian Salad
11/26/24 • 37 min
Meet Bray. A 34-year-old gay black man who was adopted and raised by white parents. Questions of identity and navigating micro aggressions when others around you don’t is but a fraction of Bray’s experience navigating his identity in a white world. Social constructs of what is ‘Black’ or what is ‘White’ all come into question. How do you navigate social expectations and take pride in who you are when most don’t understand or relate to your experiences?
Bray's story, much like a vibrant salad, is a blend of experiences, challenges, and triumphs. It serves as a poignant reminder that our identities are not defined by societal expectations, but by the journeys we undertake and the people who walk alongside us.

Episode #15: Hello, Inclusion! You Can Call Me Chicken
Canadian Salad
12/10/24 • 35 min
In May of this year, KFC announced the release of Halal chicken at majority of their restaurants across Ontario. As the year went on, what seemed like inclusion only led to exclusion - and the eventual downfall of any inclusive efforts originally made. What went wrong?
Well inclusion can create exclusion when it's done without diversity, equity and without profit-seeking goals in mind. In this episode, we explore what true inclusion looks like and why true inclusion can't exclude - if done without the goal of dollars in the pocket. We will focus on systemic racism, the role of equity in business decisions, and the broader implications for inclusion done inclusively and intentionally.
We can fully inclusive where no one is excluded - that's not a threat, but a world we can create. And yes, we did just use the word "inclusive" eight times . . . you're welcome!

Episode 22: When Canada Isn't That Into You
Canadian Salad
01/28/25 • 35 min
Universities are losing money. Some are closing. With IRCC rolling the dice in their cuts to international students, the impact has only just begun. Because Hostion and I came to Canada as international students, we feel the weight of this topic deeply and that's why we have to talk about it.
Join us as we discuss how these 'knee-jerk' reactions to international students are causing real economic, diplomatic and humane consequences. We understand the need to address current issues - but if we're honest, these shortsighted policies are disrupting and harming real people. Not only that, but immigrants and international students are the rebuttal, the national answer and the global power to expand into markets worldwide instead of relying on our southern neighbour. International students are a part of Canada's ecosystem - when one tree is cut down, the whole forest and all the creatures feel it. Join us for a real and personal episode which underscores the invaluable contributions of international students to Canada's society and economy. Plus, stick around for some fun trivia at the end!

Dishes Out: You Must Hate it Here
Canadian Salad
06/21/24 • 8 min
We recently were told that since we are being critical of things in Canada, then we must hate it here. Unfortunately, that kind of logic only allows for one feeling or one expression at a time. We're human!
We don't hate our partner because we criticized them for never doing their share of the housework. We can hold appreciation and criticism at the same time. It's not about one side or the other. Being critical isn't necessarily out of hate, more often, it's out of love. Join us dishing it out!

My Culture In Their Cubicle
Canadian Salad
11/19/24 • 39 min
Workplace anxiety is the number one stressor for immigrants integrating into Canada. And make no mistake, we know why - unspoken expectations, subtle nuances and navigating work place culture. How do you bring your authentic self to the workplace? Is professionalism cultural? What's the difference between cultural values and cultural identities?
We will unpack the intricacies of cultural dialects, differing definitions of professionalism, and the delicate balance of staying authentic while integrating into a new work environment. We'll discuss how unspoken rules, from staying late in Japan to wearing flip-flops in tech, all demonstrate the need for both sender and receiver in communication to adjust and adapt to each other. Tune in to hear our reflections on adapting to new norms, the importance of workplace culture, and how to find your place without losing yourself in the process.
