Ramadan: A Global Expression of Collective Faith
Canadian Salad
04/09/24 • 39 min
Ramadan is special. Faith, religion and family shape how we make the holiday meaningful either in our home country or here in Canada. What is the sacred and collective observance of Ramadan and how do Muslims in Canada see this religious day in light of a society that doesn’t observe it?
Hostion and Andrea invite two guests, Bushra from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Fayrouz from Libya, to share their experiences of observing Ramadan both in Canada and in their countries of origin. Hear how community can help create collective joy and worship. Listen to them share how navigating Ramadan can be hard while Muslims are being oppressed in other parts of the world. What are their traditions? Why is Ramadan important? The hardest thing about observing Ramadan in Canada is, well . . . you’ll just have to listen.

Canadian Work Excuses
Canadian Salad
05/07/24 • 42 min
"You don't have any Canadian work experience." As immigrants, we apply for jobs, get the interview and then we're slammed with this comment. Our education, our global work experience and even our skills somehow can't match up to these "high" work expectations in Canada. And we continue to be denied a job.
Join Andrea and Hostion as they explore (through ranting) the harm denying a person a job can do - not just for a person but for Canada as a whole. Free labour, unpaid internships and even achieving a Canadian higher education shouldn't be the cost to be employed. There are ways to do better and these two immigrant friends have solutions. It's time for Canadian employers and Canada to listen.

Dishes Out: The Price of Nationalism
Canadian Salad
04/18/25 • 11 min
Canada is a nation. And as long as the concept of 'nation' exists, nationalism will follow right behind it. Identity to country is on the tongues and minds of so many and has always been an aspect of creating meaning for ourselves. The defence of an idea, a border, a nation has been enforced more often by violence. But why? What is it about a nation that harming others makes it worth it?
In this Dishes Out episode, we'll explore a comment which highlighted the hopelessness of nationalism - how violence and othering of immigrants or those who don't fit an ideal mold seems to the default for the future. We unpack the complexity nationalism brings in shaping identity. Could nationalism be something positive? Can we be known as a nation who helps people instead of harming people? Maybe . . . maybe we can if we put people first and remember that the cost of a nation shouldn't be the cost of humanity. Because humanity always existed before the nation did - and we have to keep it that way.

Sadly again, the X platform was alive and full of fire with a recent post citing hate towards migrants from India to Canada. The claim: they're illiterate, with low class backgrounds and with no civic duty. It's a comment that anti-immigrant and anti-migrant noise makers, influencers and media channels are using to spread lies and misinformation.
Migrants are people with dreams, ambition, and gut. Their worth is inherent and not based upon them being able to speak English. It makes absolutely no sense to hate someone for not having "manners" or being "illiterate". Hostion and Andrea are dishing it out, not letting the anti-migrant, dehumanization and white supremacy voices have the last say.
Hate the systems. Love the migrants. People are people are people are people.

Welcome to the Immigrant Blame Game!
Canadian Salad
09/13/24 • 9 min
After immigration being open for so many years, you'd think that people would come up with something new to blame immigrants for. But alas, here we are, in the 21st century and people are still blaming immigrants for housing and employment issues. Welcome to the immigrant blame game where dusty, lame tropes and uncurious minds fill the air.
While most of us are exhausted by this rhetoric, we're slapping back and breaking down why current issues are not the fault of immigrants but are actually the fault of systemic issues like capitalism and government policies - which are failing a lot of people. The blame goes towards the made-up systems that we created. And news flash: we can transform this made up system! It's true! But we have to stop blaming each other and work hard to create something better.
So take that, blame gamers.

Parenting With My Child's Culture
Canadian Salad
03/05/24 • 34 min
Immigration is not for the faint of heart, especially with kids. How do you navigate a new culture while trying to preserve pieces of your own? What do you let go of and what to you accept? How do you balance your ever evolving identity while your children grow up immersed in a culture, community, traditions, faith or background that is different than your own?
Meet Fayrouz from Libya, Kari from Jamaica and Tabitha from the United States. These three moms, along with Andrea, will have an honest conversation on the fears, the joys and the uncertainties that parents face when immigrating to a new country. Hear them laugh about potty training, hear their worries about Canadian sleep overs and hear the struggle it can be to allow children freedom to explore a new country while they yearn to keep their own culture at the heart of their home. Be encouraged to know that parenting as immigrants is a whole other experience and no one is alone in the nuance, the worry and the beauty that comes from it.

Dishes Out: Bro McGee's Beef With Diversity
Canadian Salad
02/14/25 • 12 min
Recently we were told "Diversity isn't working" . . . and we're clapping back and we are saying it is.
Hostion is back, making a triumphant return, bringing much-needed diversity, humour and wit back to the show. Along with Andrea, they'll dive into a humorous and thought-provoking discussion, addressing the misconceptions around diversity in society. They'll debunk a comment which claims that diversity isn't working in Canada — highlighting the value of multiculturalism, the benefits it brings, and the ongoing challenges in achieving true equality. Diversity works - except for ahem . . . a certain demographic. Who may that be? Well, you'll just have to listen.

Religion in an Ever Evolving Society
Canadian Salad
10/18/23 • 40 min
Religion and faith. Some immigrants come to Canada seeking freedom to express their faith without persecution. Some immigrants come with religious traditions but cannot find a community to express them. Other immigrants come with no religious affiliation or faith expression at all. How do we normalize talking about religious beliefs in a way that doesn’t alienate, proselytize or exclude anyone? If Canada is secular, why are certain religious groups often discriminated against?
Take a listen to the conversation between two people with different faith backgrounds. Andrea shares her journey of deconstruction out her religious Christian upbringing while Hostion generously holds space and curiosity for religion and faith - even if he doesn’t have one. Humanizing one another is what we need, especially for those who believe differently than we do.
