Beards, anaesthetic and prostitutes in antiquity
Ancient History Hound

In this podcast I take three somewhat random topics and, well, you'll find out when you listen. Find out what topic of gossip in an Athenian barbershop caused panic, what types of surgery you could have had, and, finally the other thing in the title. Enjoy!

Night of the Livy Dead VII
Ancient History Hound
10/22/23 • 21 min
In this Halloween special I pick out a few characters from antiquity who you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley, or pretty much anywhere. A Mesopotamian demon, shapeshifters and a terrifying trio all feature.
You can find previous Night of the Livy Dead episodes on here - just scroll down. For episode notes (reading list, transcription, links and images) go to www.ancientblogger.com
If you can rate or review please do but more importantly have a great Halloween.

Eclipses in Antiquity
Ancient History Hound
06/27/20 • 42 min
It's time to turn my attention to the references made to eclipses in antiquity. They appear in palace records, poems and historical writings and across the Mediterranean (including Mesopotamia).
How where they understood? What rituals were observed and how can they be used to date and locate an event? Join me to find out more.

Kings of Rome. Lucius Tarquinius Priscus.
Ancient History Hound
03/30/20 • 32 min
Rebranding, tyrants, clothes, racing, omens, hydraulic engineering, formal wear and possibly a very long held grudge. The story of Rome's 5th king is certainly entertaining and in this podcast I talk about some of the aspects of his reign.

Kings of Rome. Ancus Marcius.
Ancient History Hound
02/24/20 • 28 min
It's time for Rome's fourth King, Ancus Marcius to come into the spotlight. I discuss what he did and didn't build as well as play detective in a murder mystery. Spoiler alert, he probably did it.

Human Sacrifice in Antiquity. Part Two.
Ancient History Hound
11/25/19 • 47 min
In the second episode it's the turn of Greece and Rome to come under the spotlight. To what extent did both cultures engage in this and how did their myths and rituals reflect their attitudes? All with a few puns thrown in to lighten the mood.

Kings of Rome. Tullus Hostilius.
Ancient History Hound
01/26/20 • 27 min
Continuing my examination of the Roman kings I talk about Tullus Hostilius, the third Roman king.
Tulls was primarily associated with Rome's military exploits and had a hand in a famous myth. He also had more than a hand in a death which shocked even Livy. From war to religious problems and a bizarre death. It's all here.

Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
I had been sharing ancient history content in a number of ways and thought I'd give podcasting a go. It's been (and still is) a learning curve but I've really enjoyed what it's helped me to do.
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
I'd like them to come away with a few things that they hadn't realised. Better still a bit more of an interest in ancient history in the wider context.
Which episode should someone start with?
Just pick a topic you like the sound of. The older ones might differ in sound quality, I don't have a studio but I hope the content makes up for that.
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
I really enjoyed making the Roman Kings series, mainly because I don't generally have a series - my episodes tend to be either two parters or standalone ones. As a rule I enjoy all of them, it might sound a bit of a cop out but my main metric for my podcast isn't numbers, it's that I enjoy doing it. The minute that stops is the minute I hang up the microphone.
Which episode are you most proud of?
Each episode starts with an idea and then moves to lots of research, scripting, drafting (more drafting), recording and then editing. As such they are each labours of love so I can't say that any elicit more pride than another. I suppose the episodes with guests come with additional pressures and demands. So perhaps those? I've been very fortunate as all the guests I have had have been wonderful and put up with any technical issues!
What is your vision for your show?
If you gave me the option of 1,000 new listeners with no real interaction or feedback or 1 nice email, I'd take the latter. It seems to run against the feverish demand placed on new listeners but I have been happiest when I've had a nice review or email saying that someone liked a podcast. I'm not going to get rich or famous, it's a hobby so it has to be about enjoying it all.
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
I'm not sure I have a favourite, what I listen to is more influenced by my mood than anything. Could be a factual one or a drama. I appreciate it sounds like I'm doding that question.
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
Initially my podcast was called 'AncientBlogger's podcast' as I was on twitter with that username and started an ancient history website with the same name. Then I realised it could mean anything! I've always loved dogs and thought the name tracked well. It means I get to stick my rescue dog in the coverart. I have become that type of person.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I studied ancient history at Uni and then decided that I wanted to go further with it, though I knew I wouldn't end up making a living out of it. I studied for an MA in Classical Civilisation part time whilst working and loved it. I have a regular day job but try to engage with ancient history as much as I can. I volunteer at schools (one in full Roman armour) and blog about ancient history. Recently I've been doing videos on TikTok all about it, no dancing though.
