The Top 5 Lessons Of 2020!

play

12/19/20 • 10 min

The year 2020 has been difficult for everyone and you are likely to have learned some lessons along the way. Listen in today as Jay discusses how this year taught him to always being prepared for unforeseen circumstances, how to make things happen rather than waiting for things to happen as well as understanding that this too shall pass, and soon a new sense of normality shall resume.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Don’t put starting your business idea off. The pandemic has taught us that if you have an idea, go for it because you never know what is just around the corner. If you have got a good idea, just go with it and execute it quickly. More doing, less thinking. You will learn more by doing something rather than just thinking about it.
  • Don’t wait for things to happen, make them happen. Many people are waiting for things to return to normal however the truth is things may never return to ‘normal’. It is how you react to the ‘new normal’ which will make all the difference, you have to make your business moves now and don’t wait for things to return to how they once were.
  • Always be prepared. It is always important to have a plan to pivot when a crash comes, always plan like you anticipate something is going to happen. If you’re prepared for an unforeseen market crash, you can move and adapt quickly.
  • This too shall pass. Things will get back to some sort of normality in the future. Don’t stress about things so much, if you’re making the right pivots and trying to move yourself forward then you will get past this situation. The market always comes back, it is where you are going to be in that chain of thoughts.
  • Keep focused and surround yourself with the right people. Mentors are great because they will push you in the right direction. A mentor will always look at a solution to your problem and will help you to find ways in which you can move forward. They will look at their past experience and use this to allow you and your business to move in the right direction.

BEST MOMENTS

“I don’t think anybody has been through this before and I don’t think anybody’s been able to analyse it.”

“This was a market crash like we’ve never seen before. We’ve never seen the amount of money that has been pumped into the economy and the amount of wealth that has been created.”

“You have got to look at how you can pivot, and then make the move.”

ABOUT THE HOST

Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0 to 500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all with no investment other than a slight amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota, and New Look, to name a few.

Its immense success inevitably brought about outside interest, and at the age of 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success.

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

After helping several young entrepreneurs to succeed as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.

Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.

Business Mentor Podcast - Do YOU Have the FEAR of Regret?

Do YOU Have the FEAR of Regret?

Business Mentor Podcast

play

09/17/20 • 11 min

Is there something you’ve always wanted to try out, but the fear of regret has stopped you from doing so? Join Jay today as he discusses how to stop this fear from holding you back as he draws on his own personal experience on how some of his business ventures have turned into life lessons. Discover why it is important to test and measure your new idea, why setting yourself a deadline is beneficial and why the best lessons sometimes come from our failures.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you have got an idea, and you want to run with it rather than just think about it you should test and measure it and let the results decide if it is going to be something worth doing. The fear of regret and not doing something outweighs just going ahead and doing it. Whatever happens, you will learn from it.
  • Going ahead and doing something, gives you this power of ‘tried it, it didn’t work, learnt your lesson’ and you are able to move on from it. The biggest regret you will have is not doing it. If you decide not to do something, you will be plagued with ‘what if’ thoughts.
  • You have to go into these ventures and put some action into them. Put a time frame on things and give it a go. If you put a short enough time frame on your new business idea and stick to it, you can really push it forward. You are able to test and measure the results you get. Testing and measuring is the only thing that will make you look at this new idea and decide whether or not to proceed with it.
  • The key thing is to set a deadline. If you are going to test something, tell yourself you will give this idea 2-3 months. Use the results to determine if you will continue. This doesn’t mean that you will give up straight away. Make sure you are aware of your key performance areas and ensure that they are relevant to what you are
  • When you have created your plan, make sure you execute the plan correctly. If your budget allows, spend some money on testing the product. It is better to test something quickly and get direct feedback from your end consumer, rather than try to build it organically. Don’t let the fear of regret eat you up when you get older. Try things that you wish to do, the younger you are the easier it is to do.

BEST MOMENTS

“At the time I thought ‘oh I wish I never did this’ but looking back, it was a great lesson, a lesson that I can share.”

“I don’t look back and think ‘I wish I would’ve saved that money’ what I’ve learned is a great lesson and I made some great partnerships.”

“By doing nothing, you gain nothing.”

Business Mentor Podcast - Thoughts On The Pandemic and Its REAL Impact..!
play

07/16/20 • 10 min

With the current pandemic at the forefront of everybody’s mind, Jay discusses his thoughts on the impact of COVID-19 on the business world and how you can get ahead of the game. Whilst many people share their opinions on social media, it is important that you think solely on what is right for you and your business, putting the workload in to come out of the recession even stronger and taking a media detox to focus on your own business needs.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • There is a lot of disruption in the market and you need to think to yourself ‘what can I control?”. That may be creating new content, setting up a home office, utilising platforms such as Zoom and gaining information from your clients.
  • There are many people with strong theories and opinions on the pandemic. You can go down the direction of listening to these differences of opinions, but it is important to know what you need to do in order to excel during the pandemic.
  • You need to have a balanced view on life during the pandemic, the best way to do that is to switch off the media, stop consuming media that discusses the pandemic. Focus on yourself, it is about you and your business, it is not about other people and their personal agenda.
  • The companies that have or will come out of this pandemic stronger are the ones that are putting the work in. Companies such as Air BnB and Uber came out stronger during the last recession due to planning and pivoting.
  • Whilst it is important and often encouraged to post on social media platforms, you also need to know when to put the action in. Wake up early, plan for your business and put the foundations in so that you can come out of this stronger. If you’re not backing up your talking with action, then what is the point?

BEST MOMENTS

  • “You could watch stuff for hours and hours, you’re always going to get one opinion and that is how the world works if you get to hooked up on one way or another way you procrastinate doing what you need to do.”
  • “You have got to take a balanced view.”
  • “I knew if I could get to them first, whilst everybody else was procrastinating, then I can get in there.

Business Mentor Podcast - Swim! And Have a Shark Mindset with NBA Superstar Walter Bond
play

04/22/20 • 50 min

“We need to keep escalating up the food chain to keep getting bigger, faster, and stronger. That’s the attitude of an athlete. That’s what we bring to the business world.”

Our guest for today is Walter Bond, a pro NBA player turned entrepreneur. In this episode of The Business Mentor Podcast, learn about the transformation that having a shark mindset will bring in your journey towards success. Be determined like a hunting shark.

This discussion also covers the difference of mentorship and leadership, the importance of talent and ability in choosing a career, the similarities of excelling in sports and business, and much more!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How to make mentorship work for you?
    • You and your mentor must have a harmonious relationship. Find a good mentor who you can trust and communicate well with.
    • Follow and execute what your mentor encourages you to do. Get out of your comfort zone and put in the work.
  • What can we learn from pro athletes turned entrepreneurs? Athletes value the importance of the process and development. Not everything can happen instantly. You can’t expect success to come the next day in a business. Do things incrementally so you’ll get the long-lasting results.
    • Like in NBA, master the fundamentals and be incredible at everything to really excel. Take a break if needed, enjoy the off-season.
  • Have a shark mindset. Great white sharks are positioned so highly in the food chain because they’re ruthless and insatiable. Sharks too need to move a lot, or else they die. Be determined and unrelenting as much as possible.
  • Leaders are readers. Walter’s top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs is to commit to the journey and read a lot about what you’re going into. Do what you can to gain knowledge. There are many provided resources out there.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “It wasn’t like I chose basketball; basketball chose me. I was a good athlete.”
  • “Patience. It takes time. When you’re given advice in mentoring or coaching, you have to do it over the course of time.”
  • “... We took them to an off-season process so to experience exponential growths. The same metaphor in sports translates to business in a million different ways.”
  • “I made it to the NBA because I’ve mastered the fundamentals of basketball. I’ve been successful in the business because I’ve mastered the fundamentals of business.”
  • “Before we decide on our career, we need to discover our gifts.”

Business Mentor Podcast - Battle Ready or Business Savvy?

Battle Ready or Business Savvy?

Business Mentor Podcast

play

02/07/20 • 6 min

Jay has a great philosophy about how to get things done when you face any challenging situation in business. The flight and fight mode of thinking is a powerful tool that Jay shares with his mentees and it has proven successful across many different challenges.

During the day as entrepreneurs, you are constantly thinking and it is these thought processes that put you in either flight or fight mode.

Fight mode is not positive and will not enable you to find the solution you need to move forward but if you get yourself into flight mode you are being business savvy and will be able to think creatively, find a solution and move forward.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • In any situation, you have to make a conscious choice about whether you respond in a fight or flight mode.
  • Fight mode is when you are tense – looking at problems, thinking that the world is against me. It’s my fault, their fault you don’t take responsibility
  • Flight mode is when you frame your thinking in a more positive way – e.g. If the client hasn’t paid, why haven’t they paid there must be a reason, can we sort out a payment plan.
  • If you are in fight mode you are personally getting angry and are not thinking forward to a possible solution
  • If you are in fight mode you are not going to get to the problem and you cannot solve a problem unless you can think creatively about it.
  • If something negative happens you have to get into flight mode to be able to work on it and solve the problem so that you can move forward.
  • In business, you are going to get challenges every day and so you need to be thinking about flight mode every day so that you are in the right frame of mind to solve the problems
  • If something big happens it’s even more important that you get into flight mode so that you can think creatively to find a solution.
  • If you have a situation – remember to ask yourself how will it best serve me if I go into fight mode? - blaming myself and blaming others?
  • Choosing to go into flight mode means looking at the opportunities and what changes and steps you can take to make this better, and get through it successfully.

BEST MOMENTS

‘When you look back you will see it was not as big as it seemed when you were facing it initially’

‘At the time it seems massive but if you keep working through it and keep doing things, things will change’

‘All creative thinking comes when you are in flight mode’

Jay is chatting with Luca Gallone, global celebrity magician who has 2 million followers on Instagram, and 5 1⁄2 million followers on TikTok.

He has built an audience by putting out incredible content and over the last year has had around 3 billion views for his mind-blowing videos.

When so many people see your content, you start seeing other opportunities and after one of his videos went viral he was invited to appear on the Ellen show, the biggest talk show in America which has led to more opportunities globally.

Luca and Jay focus on the way different social media platforms can be used to build a following and Luca has some great advice on how to create viral content.

You don’t have to know exactly how your audience will build, start creating content and if you believe in your vision things will start coming to you.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • My way of growing has mostly been based on creating viral content that is shared with millions of views this then brings followers from the content itself.
  • It was a case of trying lots of different things, then working to make sure everything was the best it could be.
  • At all times you need to be thinking about how your content can work for different audiences on different platforms.
  • If you commit fully and work hard things will work out.
  • Even if you don’t have a huge following you can create a bit of celebrity status and become a celebrity in your niche.
  • Instagram is in a transition phase, all platforms ‘age up’ and young people don’t want to be on Instagram if their grandad is on it so they are moving over to TikTok.
  • If you want to grow your followers make sure your video is fitted for the platform it is posted on.
  • Look at the trends, TikTok is built on trends and the power of these trends is enormous.
  • Collaborate with a bigger influencer to increase your reach and grow your followers.
  • Keep content short – generally videos under 15 seconds are the most successful.
  • You don’t have to know exactly how your audience will build the most important thing is to get started.

BEST MOMENTS

‘You should aim to be an expert in the area you are in ’

‘My content is about entertaining so the fandom is a little different’

‘I’m very careful about keeping control of my content’

‘Facebook took away the organic reach for influencers and some of my friends’ careers were ruined overnight because they put all their eggs in one basket’

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

After helping several young entrepreneurs to success as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.

Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.

In the UK alone, 95% of business fail within the first five years, and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number.

Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.
