Business Mentor Podcast - Thoughts On The Pandemic and Its REAL Impact..!

Thoughts On The Pandemic and Its REAL Impact..!

07/16/20 • 10 min

Business Mentor Podcast

With the current pandemic at the forefront of everybody’s mind, Jay discusses his thoughts on the impact of COVID-19 on the business world and how you can get ahead of the game. Whilst many people share their opinions on social media, it is important that you think solely on what is right for you and your business, putting the workload in to come out of the recession even stronger and taking a media detox to focus on your own business needs.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • There is a lot of disruption in the market and you need to think to yourself ‘what can I control?”. That may be creating new content, setting up a home office, utilising platforms such as Zoom and gaining information from your clients.
  • There are many people with strong theories and opinions on the pandemic. You can go down the direction of listening to these differences of opinions, but it is important to know what you need to do in order to excel during the pandemic.
  • You need to have a balanced view on life during the pandemic, the best way to do that is to switch off the media, stop consuming media that discusses the pandemic. Focus on yourself, it is about you and your business, it is not about other people and their personal agenda.
  • The companies that have or will come out of this pandemic stronger are the ones that are putting the work in. Companies such as Air BnB and Uber came out stronger during the last recession due to planning and pivoting.
  • Whilst it is important and often encouraged to post on social media platforms, you also need to know when to put the action in. Wake up early, plan for your business and put the foundations in so that you can come out of this stronger. If you’re not backing up your talking with action, then what is the point?

BEST MOMENTS

  • “You could watch stuff for hours and hours, you’re always going to get one opinion and that is how the world works if you get to hooked up on one way or another way you procrastinate doing what you need to do.”
  • “You have got to take a balanced view.”
  • “I knew if I could get to them first, whilst everybody else was procrastinating, then I can get in there.

ABOUT THE HOST

Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0 to 500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all with no investment other than a slight amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota, and New Look, to name a few.

Its immense success inevitably brought about outside interest, and at the age of 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success.

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

After helping several young entrepreneurs to succeed as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.

Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.

In the UK alone 95% of businesses fail within the first five years and Jay aims to reduce that number.

Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.

How to be ADAPTABLE and PIVOT your business in times of economic turmoil

In today’s uncertain times you may be wondering which direction to take your business, or if you need to take it in a new direction at all. Join us today, where host Jay Dillon discusses how to know when the time is right to pivot your business and how to adapt your business to the current economic climate.

Learn how to keep your business on track and the ways you can talk to your customers to help you on your journey when you listen in.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Any business can give up when things get tough. You may not make as much money as you did previously but it is important to stay afloat and adaptable, this could really help to reinvent yourself and your business.
  • Adaptability and using it wisely are crucial when it comes to managing your business. Pivoting is just changing direction, looking at where you are at the moment and what is happening within your business and the knowledge if you should pivot.
  • There are several reasons why a company should choose to pivot. If you find your company is always playing catch-up or running into constant streams of new competitors then this could be a good opportunity to pivot your business.
  • When pivoting your business, pick new goals and establish a new direction. Create a vision board, go back to your planning and start-up phase. If you are able to adapt your business model, look at ways to do so rather than scrapping all your previous work.
  • Listen to your customers, find out what they want because your customers are the ones who can guide you into what the market wants. However, make sure your direction of pivot presents an opportunity for growth, look at your vision and your plan and figure out where the new opportunity lies.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “You’ve got to come with solutions, you have got to look into the future.”
  • “In business, uncertainty is a certainty”
  • “We moved quicker than everyone else, whilst the big boys were taking their time we adapted quickly.”
  • “You have to change, and the sooner you do that the better.”

Guest Podcast : Fulfil Your Potential with Jay Dhillon

In a rare episode your host, entrepreneur and mentor, Jay Dhillon gets questioned on all things business. How he mentors, how he can help you start, grow and scale your own business and why mentoring is the key to success. Hear Jay’s personal story from of how mentorship helped him got him where he is today and how he learns from the losses and enjoys the triumphs.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The mind is something that you can keep educated and keep training. In technology now (particularly since the lockdown) you need to be able to adapt, this means constantly learning. We can see the future, we know where it is going we want to be always educated ourselves if you carry on doing what you were 15 years ago you will not advance in business.
  • Mentors should be highly valued as you know they have likely been through difficulties in their businesses. When you speak to mentors or others who have been successful in business, they are telling their stories raw, there is no script or strategy and they give you the belief if they have done it you can do it. You learn from your loses, but you won’t make the same mistakes again.
  • The start-up phase is usually the toughest phase but the most enjoyable, you have to enjoy the process. Many people end up placing too much pressure on themselves, they want that big goal straight away. If you’ve had a big business win, just enjoy it. The journey to success has to be enjoyed, enjoy the wins because the pressures of business are there all the time anyway.
  • It is really important to open up to people if you are struggling in your business if you don’t open up and you don’t be open and honest with your mentor or the person you work with then you will go down the path of fighting against something that you need to let out.
  • When someone very close to you tells you that you’re not going to be successful in business and tells you time and time again, and perhaps you’re going into a competitive industry that you are not familiar with it is not nice to hear. This usually makes you want to do it, even more, make sure you give it your all and do it for yourself.

BEST MOMENTS

“When I’m not growing, I’m not fulfilled and that means picking up a book, trying a new idea or a new business.”

“You learn more from failing than you do from your successes.”

“I encourage every entrepreneur to take the help, take what’s on offer especially if you’re struggling and reach out.”
