Burnout Made Me Do It

In this episode, I am joined by special guest Amber Price, a Licensed Professional Counselor, Behavior Analyst, and Clini-Coach focused on helping adults struggling with ADHD. She has over 15 years of experience working with individuals struggling with mental health issues, autism, and ADHD. And personal and professional experience with numerous neurodivergent individuals.

As an adult with ADHD, Amber shares not only her clinical expertise but her personal experience with burnout as a neurodivergent person.

We define what neurodivergence is and how burnout can affect the mind differently than that of a neurotypical person. We explore how neurodivergent minds in the workplace may work in a different manner and complete tasks in a different manner than expected.

Amber recommends two great strategies that people can start to implement when they are trying to figure out their strategy in the workplace

Are there some jobs that are a better fit for neurodivergent minds? We discuss some of these types of jobs and what they may look like. Amber gives us some tips and clues on what to look for in the recruitment process to help you determine if a potential workplace would be a good fit.

We also discuss how important self-care is and the role it can play in burnout prevention.

Amber talks about her upcoming program “From Chaos to Clarity,” designed for adults with ADHD which will launch soon.

Finally, Amber shares with us what the craziest/silliest thing she’s ever done in response to burnout!

Finding Happiness In Something You Aren't Good At, with Megan Tobin

In this weeks episode Megan Tobin, the principal coach of TMT coaching shares her story of burnout and how she found a way out through something she didn’t feel she was good at.
Megan is an endurance athlete, a Triathlon Coach, and a recovering corporate marketer. Despite having a successful career, Megan was left feeling unfulfilled and burnt out even though everyone told her she was crushing it. It was actually through trying an activity she was not good at that she finally found her greatest joy.
After experiencing burnout and hitting walls, Megan was advised to start self-care. She described seeing other triathletes and feeling like that was something she could never do. Not one to step away from a challenge, Megan hired a trainer and ran a 5K three weeks later. The following month she completed her first triathlon!
In this episode, we explore what we have been taught about success, and how we are taught to seek things we are good at. However, it was only when Megan pursued something that she wasn’t good at that she experienced the greatest joy. Not only did she learn to believe in herself, but she learned the value of doing an activity because she loves it and just how important meaningful self-care is.

Discovering Fulfilment in the Extremes, with Katie Perez

This episode features special guest Katie Perez, LMFT.

Katie is a brave one! In this episode she shares her very authentic and vulnerable personal life experiences, including encountering burnout in her professional life, and tells us about finding fulfilment through an unlikely avenue - an extreme experience in the outdoors.

Katie discusses the pressure she felt of trying to check all of the boxes of having a career, a family, a marriage - the whole lot - and also the unexpected feeling of freedom she experienced after failure.

Katie moved to a small town in Washington. After struggling with alcoholism and the end of her marriage, she started learning about boats and how to repair them. This cultivated an interest in boating which began the start of a fisherman’s life on a crab boat. Yes, you read that right! Not only was this radically different from her previous career as a therapist, but it was also a big cultural shift for her as well. She describes the exhilarating experience she had in a world that was completely different from her own and the feeling of empowerment she gained from doing a difficult job in an extreme environment with some grumpy old ‘sea dogs’ who didn't know what to make of her!

In this episode, we discuss the importance of self-knowledge and how realizing what makes you function at your best can prevent burnout. Finally, we look at having the courage to follow a dream and to listen to what your experience is telling you.
