Bulletproof For BJJ Podcast - Better Learning For BJJ: What do you actually Know?
play

06/10/24 • 17 min

Episode 343: Are you struggling to remember what was taught in class this week? When coaches teach a different technique and concept every week, it can be hard to keep up and retain the information. BJJ as a body of knowledge is constantly growing and evolving with specialised techniques and strategies for both Gi and No-Gi grappling. JT & Joey dig deeper on what can help and hinder your learning at Jiu-Jitsu and why spending multiple sessions on one position or a sequence of attacks and defences can really help you achieve a good understanding and real learning.
Everybody learns differently but giving people more opportunity and greater exposure to skills is key, this might require a different approach to the way coaches are teaching week to week. Joey explains his recent experience having wins with his students learning back control and JT talks about how being competitive and not making mistakes can actually mess up your learning. When you struggle to remember what's being taught in class its hard to build your game and make progress, this is where you could benefit from choosing your own personal BJJ project and working on it consistently.

Episode 344: IBJJF 2024 was a controversial championship! There was a disqualification of Tainan Dalpra against Francisco Lo which was to a questionable judgement with no bad intentions involved and the position technically not illegal but was deemed a heel hook attack. This left the Gi worlds crowd with a bad vibe. Has the rule structure started to really negatively impact the game.
Could Heel Hooks save the Gi Game? This one change would significantly change the way the game is being played, worm guard would be risky, 50/50 wouldn't be safe and stalling would be deadly with new leg attacks available. This recent IBJJF World championships has highlighted the growing gap between the dynamic nature of modern No-Gi grappling and how Gi jiu-jitsu rules are just dragging the game down. Heel Hooks in the Gi... What do you think??

Episode 347: Have you ever bulged a disc in your neck?! A friend of the podcast asks about rolling with a cervical disk replacement- is it possible? Is it advisable. JT references a very famous grappler who had to have one of their discs replaced and still compete only weeks after the surgery, who was it?
Have you tried training 2 sessions per day? If you have limited days to train is it more beneficial than spacing out your training over the week or should you cram 2 x per day for 3 days? There are some pros and cons for both but which should you choose?
Is jumping into comp after a long hiatus a good idea? 8 weeks of intense training with the end goal of getting after it and making the podium. Also it helps you get in shape for your wedding- right? Is this a good idea? Go hard on a competition training camp just before your wedding day, could be a recipe for disaster...

Are You Getting Good BJJ Advice?

Do you ask for advice from higher belts at your Academy? Maybe your friends give you advice that seems a little questionable. Either way BJJ advice is not hard to come by but how do you know what's good info and what is fake news? JT & Joey have given and received a truck load of advice over the years and not all of it was helpful. To save you time there are some ways that you can cut through the BS and save yourself years of wasted time. When you are not sure if the advice you are getting is solid there are some easy things you can do to work it out. You need to get 2nd and 3rd opinions on the same question to see if there is a pattern between them. Also asking "Why do you say this...?" Getting an understanding of why your Advisor is telling you this will give context that can help inform whether or not the advice is relevant. Another key take-away from this discussion is understanding the person you are getting the advice from- What is their Hammer? What is their strength and are they only speaking from their place of capability which is not necessarily going to work for you with your specific skill set or body type. Lots of gems in this one- let us know the best BJJ advice you have received in the comments.

Do you feel lost at BJJ? Feel like you might want to quit? You need a BJJ Buddy! The fact that Jiu-Jitsu does not have a proper Buddy System is a problem that is leaving beginners stranded. JT recently experienced getting paired up with an experienced guy to show him the ropes. This totally changed how he felt in an unfamiliar setting. Having someone who is your go to person to help you when you get stuck can be a life saver. One of the hardest things when getting started in BJJ is simply not not knowing what to do in certain situations whether thats a technique or social rule you have no idea about. Having someone to help you integrate into this weird culture of BJJ not only can help you feel better but improve relationships between seniors and beginners.
Up to 80% of beginners quit before blue belt for lots of different reasons but not being able to connect is a problem we all face when thrown into a completely new environment. If the gym you train at doesn't have a buddy system you may be the one who could suggest it and bring about the change changes the future of another new white belt. If your Jiu-Jitsu academy does have a buddy system let us know in the comments.
