What Do I Do When Crisis Hits with Samantha Morey

11/09/22 • 26 min

Brave Together Parenting: a podcast for parenting disabilities and unique needs.

What do we do when a crisis hits? Most moms already know the answer because we’ve been to the ER or seen a pharmacy bill! YIKES!!! In those moments did we FREEZE? FIGHT? Maybe even FAWN? Most importantly, whatever we did, was there a judgment we felt about how we reacted?

On today’s practical episode, Jessica interviews Samantha Morey LMFT about the different “threat responses”. They discuss ways we can prepare ourselves, not only for the threat response, but also to the reaction we have to our own response.

Samantha Morey, LMFT. Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Hope International University. She works with the Center for Individual and Family Therapy in Torrance, Ca. Samantha is called to sit with women and couples as they work to address the broken pieces in their lives and climb toward healing and wholehearted living. She's been married for 23 years to her best friend and beloved husband, and together they parent two teen daughters. Samantha enjoys s'mores at the firepit, making pajamas for family and friends, and cuddling under a quilt watching a Hallmark movie, which always has a good predictable ending.

Stretching for New Possibilities with Cindy Kaplan

Today we are a fly on the wall in a very special yoga class. In this class we witness a connection between human beings revealing new possibilities. We stretch our bodies and notice how caring for ourselves gives us strength. We breathe deep and meditate on how many roles we embody, (caregiver, advocate, therapist...) and wonder how our role as MOM might be most potent and desired.

Our story is from Cindy Kaplan, whose daughter, Mira, suffered a brain injury during birth, which caused spastic quadriparxsis and microcephaly. Cindy wrote a memoir about parenting Mira and today we hear a story from that memoir.

Cindy Kaplan has a Masters degree in psychology and works as a certified Conscious Parenting Coach and a Soul Care Coach. She has trained and worked as a yoga practitioner for children with special needs, and a family therapist. She is the co-founder of an online community, Evolving Together, which offers courses and support, as well as daily practices from yoga and breath work, to nutrition, neuro-movement, and listening therapy for caregivers of differently abled children.
