Brain Coach Tips - The Best Way to Teach Reading

Brain Coach Tips

The almost militant battle of how to best teach reading has been waged over the last 150+ years with proponents from both sides being adamant about their recommendations. As the reading curriculum pendulum has swung back and forth from phonics to sight to phonics the controversy roars on with little attention given to anything except technique. This narrow view of reading has resulted in millions of individuals being diagnosed with dyslexia and other reading and language delays.

With the introduction of learning styles even more reading techniques abound. Phonics is an auditory approach to reading. One must hold each sound in auditory short-term memory long enough to get the word “sounded out”. If the child’s auditory short-term memory (processing) is low, phonics doesn’t work well, and the parents typically finds themselves moving from one phonics program to the next. This is often the case in the home school community because phonics is viewed as “THE” best way to teach reading. Don’t get me wrong; I love phonics and it is a terrific way to teach reading IF the child has good auditory processing. If not, there is frustration, tears and feelings of low self-esteem.

A visual learner might pick up sight words easily but struggle with phonics because of the learner’s visual bend. For the tactile learner, reading is a real challenge as it is time consuming and inefficient to create each word you need to learn out of pipe cleaners or the like.

In this episode, the Brain Coach will give you tips on what functions must be working well in the brain for reading to take place as she reveals the best way to teach reading.

Organizing Einstein: Enhancing the Abilities of the Gifted Learner Part Two – with Dr. Jan Bedell

In part two, the Brain Coach continues the workshop on staying ahead of that voracious appetite for new ideas and expanded content that comes with a gifted learner. Additionally, the concept of teaching with frequency, intensity and duration to accelerate learning and make academics more effective is expanded in part two.

In this podcast, we will discuss the importance of all learning channels working well because each channel is designed to process particular types of information. For example, the best channel for math facts is the auditory system. After listening to the podcast, you will understand why today’s children are having such a hard time learning their math facts because of our cultural practice of drill without giving enough input. The Rapid Recall System for mastery of math facts makes math assignments easier and changes mental math abilities for gifted, typical or struggling learners for a lifetime.

Look for examples of Montessori-inspired unit studies to improve general knowledge, visual discrimination, and reading skills. For example, teaching around a common theme like animals of a certain country or region can expand to include geography, climates, science and more. Pictures of these unit study projects are included in your handout.

Learn how simple activities can accelerate auditory and visual processing (short term memory) and aid an already gifted child to higher functional ability. Storing information in the correct hemisphere of the brain makes for quick retrieval. Two specific ways that information gets to long term memory, visualization and conceptualization, are brought to light during this session. Included in this discussion are ways to improve visualization specifically (see handout).

When Does Homeschool Begin?

Most people don’t think about educating their children until pre-school age. In this episode, the Brain Coach lets you in on some tips that will save you hours of effort in later years. When children go through ALL the developmental steps that God intended, the foundation for successful education is laid. Children will then be ready for more formal education. It is our belief that these steps are so strategic that learning challenges and even labels like ADD, ADHD and reading difficulties can be avoided when the developmental foundation is fully functional.

Between birth and two years of age, a child’s brain grows at explosive rates. Learning to “input” information in the form of sensory involvement (auditory, visual, tactile, smells and tastes) can accelerate brain growth. This causes the development/formation of proper neurological pathways, which resemble super highways. When the networks of super highways exist, the brain is able to take the most efficient route in accomplishing a task. You will learn to use those strategic moments in your day to help your infant be “home schooled” from birth.
