Melissa was a published writer and self-advocate who happened to have Down syndrome. Melissa passed away in 2008 at age 20. In part 1, the Riggios discuss Melissa's life from birth through elementary school. They give an honest parent perspective of issues that are very relevant today, from the professional delivery of a disability diagnosis at birth, to the complicated reality of including a child with an intellectual disability in school.
