BLOODHAUS - Episode 12: Midsommar (Director's Cut)
play

05/01/22 • 77 min

We can have a mainstream arthouse movie, as a treat. Josh and Drusilla catch up after a trying week and catch up on movies. Josh watched Hour of the Wolf before going on a Bergman break. Drusilla saw David Arquette at Bob Baker Day. The duo discusses goth fitness and the Andrew WK renaissance before Josh tells yet another cocaine story. Drusilla watched At Long Last Love, which is good no matter what boomers say, and we love Polly Platt. Josh watched and loved Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched as well as The Greasy Strangler.
And then onto the feature, the director's cut of Ari Aster's Midsommar. Drusilla gives a trigger warning for self-harm and suicide. Dani (Florence Pugh) has the worst boyfriend of all time. The duo compares Midsommar to Hereditary and also the differences between the director's cut and the theatrical cut. They talk gaslighting and ritual, anthropology and the terrifying old people ceremony, vacations where they weren't wanted, Josh's pagan hillbilly family, meat pies full of pubes, inbreeding, then have a long debate about using disfigured actors in horror films before playing Have They Seen It?

BLOODHAUS - Episode 36: The Skin I Live In
play

10/14/22 • 73 min

This week! Car talk! But mostly a trans defense of Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In, plus Halloween Ends, Rob Zombie's The Munsters, and Sole Survivor.
From Wiki: "The Skin I Live In (Spanish: La piel que habito) is a 2011 Spanish science fiction psychological thriller film[4] written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, Jan Cornet and Roberto Álamo. It is based on Thierry Jonquet's 1984 novel Mygale, first published in French and then in English under the title Tarantula.[2][5]

Almodóvar has described the film as "a horror story without screams or frights".[6] The film was the first collaboration in 21 years between Almodóvar and Banderas since Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990).[7] It premiered in May 2011 in competition at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, and won Best Film Not in the English Language at the 65th BAFTA Awards. It was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and 16 Goya Awards."

BLOODHAUS - Episode 18: Men
play

06/13/22 • 72 min

This week Josh and Drusilla schlep to the movies to see Alex Garland's A24 joint Men (2022).
From Wikipedia: "The film stars Jessie Buckley as a widowed woman who travels on holiday to a countryside village but becomes disturbed and tormented by the strange men in the village, all portrayed by Rory Kinnear." But first! Drusilla and Josh talk about John Waters' Polyester for a sec before pivoting to David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future, which they both ADORED.
Then they get into Men. They both sort of like this movie... with reservations. They talk about the performances by Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear and the beautiful cinematography. The pair discusses the state of arthouse horror and the evolution (or dissolution) of the A24 brand. Josh feels like arthouse/A24-style horror films are going out of style in favor of teen popcorn films. Drusilla blames it on Pixar! Of course, they bitch about the term "elevated horror." Josh is sick of tragic backstories. They both wished for Straw Dogs and got The Green Man instead. Then they play Have They Seen It? Before wrapping up.
Next week: Mario Bava's The Whip and the Body.
