HR Hardball Farewell (and HELLO!)
Blazing Paddles - A Pickleball Podcast
08/22/23 • 3 min
After four seasons and 60 episodes, Elvis is leaving the building. HR Hardball has been a passion project from the time my first blog post, "First Pitch," posted on July 15, 2012 - you're currently reading post #367, so that passion burned for quite a while. It would be eight years before transitioning to a podcast format, allowing me to have interesting conversations with interesting people throughout the "people" industry, whether that was an entrepreneur, an author, a consultant, or even my own wife it has been a fun ride.
But frankly, I'm ready for a change.
This season I brought Karen into the mix as co-host and that addition kept me engaged, but it wasn't long before another topic consistently found its way into every interview.
Pickleball. As the sport continued to grow, our interest level grew in tandem. The final straw was our interview with the "Pissed & Pickled" ladies, Lori and Missy. These two crack-ups started a podcast about pickleball, we connected via Instagram, and it wouldn't be long before they were chatting with me and Karen about all things pickleball. We didn't know it at the time, but that episode would be the finale for HR Hardball.
So we have made the decision to pull the plug on HR Hardball and switch to a new topic (guess?). The new podcast, "Blazing Paddles" will focus on the sport, the players, the influencers and those at the front and center of the zeitgeist of the 2020's.
The show will launch this October, and we expect some may choose to opt out but we hope you'll stick around and share the moment with us.
With all the nonsense we have been subjected to over the last three years, the one ray of sunshine for many people was this crazy game played with a paddle and a wiffle-ball. Let's talk!
HR Hardball, the podcast was launched in October, 2020 to explore the connection between Human Behavior and Human Resources. HR Hardball, the blog first appeared in July of 2012 ~ please explore and celebrate the entire catalogue. The opinions and views expressed on HR Hardball are those of John & Karen Whitaker and do not represent our professional employers.

The Great Resignation? Hardly.
Blazing Paddles - A Pickleball Podcast
11/02/21 • 45 min
2020. A true generational occurrence. Companies were locked down. Employees were sent home. Businesses and jobs were now being defined as "essential" or "non-essential." Government over-reach continued lockdowns and restrictions even today, killing thousands of small businesses and greatly damaging thousands more. What I'm saying is this - while this may have very well been on the employers pre-2020, asking companies to pivot and adjust constantly at the whim of a heavy-hand in DC is an almost impossible task.
Agree to disagree? Ok, but give this a listen and let me know if your perspective changes a skosh. Plus the bonus of hearing the sultry tones of the Redhead, worth the listen just for that.

Getting UnBusy with Garland Vance
Blazing Paddles - A Pickleball Podcast
03/18/21 • 32 min
It's a rote response we've almost become programmed to utter. A general greeting &/or welfare check like "How's it going?" is met with the standard "Busy as always!" or some similar descriptor to let you know that you are in no way guilty of having a moment to relax.
Meet Garland Vance, a guy who has his own story about the dangers of being "busy." We've convinced ourselves that busy-ness is equal to productivity and maybe even value. Surely the busier you are the more significant and important you must be, right?
That's all great until the mule lays down. Keep throwing weight on its back and at some point that donkey refuses to move another step.
This is more than a process of time management or establishing check-lists. This is a conscious act of overcoming our propensity to say "yes" when aske to absorb one more task.
Give this a listen, get a free copy of Garland's best-selling book "Gettin Unbusy," and start making time in your life FOR life.

Episode 6, The Business of Being Happy
Blazing Paddles - A Pickleball Podcast
11/02/20 • 41 min
"You find happiness and then you find success, not the other way around." That message is woven consistently throughout my conversation with Dr. Pele. This is not your everyday "doctor;" Dr. Pelè is a bestselling author and educator who partners with leaders, teams, and individuals to achieve high performance through the science of happiness (He can also carry a tune; my personal favorite is "Thank You.")
Born in a war-torn African village, he has experienced both humble beginnings and the victory of the American dream. His unique journey has taught him what truly drives success—and it’s not who or what we are. It’s how well we leverage
happiness and harmony—the music of our lives.
Human behavior IS Human Resources, and it's much, much more.

Fashion Faux Pas, Friendship, and the Pickleball Phenomenon with Larysa Santiago
Blazing Paddles - A Pickleball Podcast
01/03/24 • 71 min
What's the secret ingredient to a thriving sports partnership? If you ask us after this week's chat with Larysa, it's a combination of matching outfits, shared goals, and a dash of serendipity. We reflect on the lighter side of competition, including a "blind date" with a new partner that led to unexpected success. Our conversation spins from personal victories on the court to the psychological battles players face, and we marvel at how pickleball creates a vibrant community of friends, families, and (in this case) former rugby players turned pickleball enthusiasts.
Strap in for a volley of laughter, strategy, and heart as we share stories from our growing pickleball community. This episode serves up memorable wins, the thrills of nail-biting defense and offense plays, and the sheer joy that echoes beyond the bounds of the court. Whether you're swinging a paddle for the first time or you're the king or queen of your local pickleball court, Larysa's infectious passion for the game is a reminder of the beauty and camaraderie found in this rapidly expanding sport. Join us for an episode that's as much about friendship and finding joy in life as it is about the game of pickleball itself.
Larysa Santiago is a local (Southlake, TX) pickleball influencer, #BlazingPaddles founding member, Southlake Paddle Club Charter Member, Erne Coordinator, former gymnast and rugby player. Larysa is one of many who can honestly say “Pickleball saved my life.” Saddle up and have a listen, you’ll be glad you did!

Avoiding the Sucking Vortex of Pissed-Off with Carol Bowser
Blazing Paddles - A Pickleball Podcast
02/02/23 • 73 min
Sometimes an episode names itself. Meet Carol Bowser, J.D., owner and founder of Conflict Management Strategies. Carol, after practicing Employment Law for several years, decided that lawsuits don't often create the level of resolution and satisfaction for the participants. Not only do the employer and employee often become adversarial, the legal representation for both parties are often equally at odds. Working relationships are damaged, sometime irreparably, and the process becomes less about creating a solution and more about zero-sum wins and losses.
In this episode we discuss what truly defines active listening and where we oftentimes fail in the process, eventually falling into (here it is) "the sucking vortex of pissed-off." Like I said, some episodes just name themselves.
One feature of a great interview is when you find immediate tactics you can put into play and Carol comes through shining in that area. Conflict is almost always a result of poor communication, unaddressed issues, and in a workplace - the disconnect between supervisor and direct report in defining and prioritizing expectations.
What are YOU listening for? What are your rules? What are your guidelines? What is bad juju?
Put your ears on and actively listen to this episode of HR Hardball.
*You can even sign up for a "Conflict Tip of The Day" to continually reinforce this new superpower you are cultivating.

2022 Recap - The Best of HR Hardball
Blazing Paddles - A Pickleball Podcast
01/20/23 • 75 min
Okay Hardballers, this pushed me to the ends of my editorial bandwidth, but with the help of our eldest son Jack, I think we have put together a fun end-of-year recap episode for your enjoyment. Fresh off the news that our little pod made the top 50% of all podcasts via Buzzsprout, we wanted to offer our current listeners a quick trip down memory lane. And for you future listeners, this should give you the overall vibe of the show.
Two newsworthy items this year for HR Hardball: I added a new co-host and we identified a new flagship sponsor. Full transparency, I'm sleeping with the co-host, but that seems acceptable after 23 years of marriage. The move developed organically as Karen joined me for a few episodes and the chemistry makes for a better show. You'll notice the new trend in our interviews - everyone just loves Karen and her "great questions." I'm becoming 2nd banana on my own show! Our new sponsor, dink.pro, founded just last year, is the first dedicated pickleball apparel company born and bred in the great state of Texas - btw, if you're not on the pickleball train yet, what in the hell are you waiting for?

Running On Empty with Sarah Moe
Blazing Paddles - A Pickleball Podcast
02/10/22 • 62 min
Tired, aren't you? Would it make you feel better to know you're not alone?
Just a year ago we talked to Sarah Moe, Founder and CEO of Sleep Health Specialists about sleep deprivation and the toll it is taking on all of us. At the time we discovered the weird dichotomy of having more time at home (remote work, lockdowns, furloughs) with a decreasing amount of sleep. Somehow we keep getting worse at one of the three pillars of good health (diet and exercise being the other two) even though we're wearing pajamas and sweatpants more than ever in human history.
Tara Haelle describes the new normal as "depleted." Not necessarily exhausted or depressed, just tapped out of reserves as we deal with the uncertainty of the times. Pauline Boss, PhD. describes this as a result of dealing with "ambiguous loss", trying to cope with a problem that has no clear foreseeable solution. It's a loss, says Haelle, of our "surge capacity." Dr. Michael Maddaus refers to this as our "Resilience Bank Account" - and it appears we are significantly NSF in that regard.
Now, after yet another year of uncertainty a lot of people feel pretty crappy. Luckily for all of us there are simple things we can do to stop that slide into the abyss.
Put your ears on and listen to a fun-filled hour of conversation and education as we discuss ambiguous loss, surge capacity, morning wood and K-Complexes.
